Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1829 Goethe famously described the string quartet as 'a conversation among four intelligent people'. Inspired by this metaphor, Edward Klorman's study draws on a wide variety of documentary and iconographic sources to explore Mozart's chamber works as 'the music of friends'. Illuminating the meanings and historical foundations of comparisons between chamber music and social interplay, Klorman infuses the analysis of sonata form and phrase rhythm with a performer's sensibility. He develops a new analytical method called multiple agency that interprets the various players within an ensemble as participants in stylized social intercourse - characters capable of surprising, seducing, outwitting, and even deceiving one another musically. This book is accompanied by online resources that include original recordings performed by the author and other musicians, as well as video analyses that invite the reader to experience the interplay in time, as if from within the ensemble.

Book The Social Worlds of Nineteenth Century Chamber Music

Download or read book The Social Worlds of Nineteenth Century Chamber Music written by Marie Sumner Lott and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music played an important role in the social life of nineteenth-century Europe, and music in the home provided a convenient way to entertain and communicate among friends and colleagues. String chamber music, in particular, fostered social interactions that helped build communities within communities. Marie Sumner Lott examines the music available to musical consumers in the nineteenth century, and what that music tells us about their tastes, priorities, and activities. Her social history of chamber music performance places the works of canonic composers such as Schubert, Brahms, and Dvoøák in relation to lesser-known but influential peers. The book explores the dynamic relationships among the active agents involved in the creation of Romantic music and shows how each influenced the others' choices in a rich, collaborative environment. In addition to documenting the ways companies acquired and marketed sheet music, Sumner Lott reveals how the publication and performance of chamber music differed from that of ephemeral piano and song genres or more monumental orchestral and operatic works. Several distinct niche markets existed within the audience for chamber music, and composers created new musical works for their use and enjoyment. Insightful and groundbreaking, The Social Worlds of Nineteenth-Century Chamber Music revises prevailing views of middle-class influence on nineteenth-century musical style and presents new methods for interpreting the meanings of musical works for musicians both past and present.

Book Beethoven s Chamber Music in Context

Download or read book Beethoven s Chamber Music in Context written by Angus Watson and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A noted violinist and conductor, Watson is particularly well suited for his chosen task: outlining the historical context and character of more than 50 of the chamber works that Beethoven composed during his years in Vienna. Avoiding the pitfalls of becoming too critical or "academic," the author characterizes each composition in general terms only, and does not discuss changing styles of performance. Instead, Watson provides information on a work's historical background and character, and on the musical points of interest in each movement. He pays special attention to the influence of Beethoven's large-scale compositions on his chamber music, and on the composer's increasing mastery of improvisation. Filling a hole in scholarship on Beethoven's compositions, this book will be greatly appreciated by professional and amateur musicians.

Book The Music of Friends 75 Years of the Chamber Music Conference and Composers Forum of the East

Download or read book The Music of Friends 75 Years of the Chamber Music Conference and Composers Forum of the East written by David W. Webber and published by . This book was released on 2020-08-25 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each summer, 350 musicians-amateur and professional, performers and composers-leave behind their day-to-day lives to gather for an intense week or more making music together. What makes this experience so compelling? The Music of Friends is a celebration of the history and ethos of this collective endeavor, formally known as the Chamber Music Conference and Composers' Forum of the East, Inc. The summer of 2020 would have marked the seventy-fifth annual conference and a move to the campus of Colgate University after decades at Bennington College, a double milestone that must now wait one more year. In celebration of the anniversary, author David Webber, a long-time conference participant, has combed the organization's archives and other historical material to present the story of an idea, the community it has created, and-crucially for this group's mission-its commitment to composers and new music. Webber documents the conference's development, and on occasion its survival against the odds, under different but always committed leaders, in a series of venues, and in changing times for music and society. With an introductory "Prelude: A Personal Perspective" by Corinna da Fonseca-Wollheim, The Music of Friends captures the spirit of conviviality, the dedication of the professionals and volunteers who stage the event every year, and the facets of the conference that will make it successful for years to come.
