Book excerpt: Look out for Julie's new book, The Almost Legendary Morris Sisters. From New York Times bestselling memoirist Julie Klam, a funny and affecting look at friendship in an age of isolation. Facebook says you have hundreds of friends. So why can you name only two? Friendship today is more confusing than ever, and yet having someone to lean on and confide in is increasingly more important. Enter bestselling author Julie Klam, an expert on friendship—online and off—if there ever was one. With humor and warmth, Klam shares stories that get to the heart of modern friendships, drawing in particular on her relationships with her four closest friends. From the relative value of secrets to the comfort of a confidant, from exciting social media friends to the ones who come to your party or meet you for lunch or go with you to a horrible doctor’s appointment, Klam explores every facet of modern friendship and peppers her stories with suggestions on how to make the most of it, and when to walk away. The result is a guide to making and keeping friendships that can stand the test of time. Delivered in Klam’s inimitable, disarmingly accessible, and uproariously funny voice, Friendkeeping is a tribute to the powerful bonds we have with our friends and the singular joy these relationships create in our lives.

Book excerpt: Look out for Julie's new book, The Almost Legendary Morris Sisters. From the beloved and bestselling memoirist comes a funny and affecting look at making the most of our friendships in an age of isolation. With her inimitable wit and disarming warmth, Julie Klam shares with us her experiences, advice, and insight in Friendkeeping, a candid, hilarious look at some of the most meaningful and enjoyable relationships in our lives: our friendships. After her bestselling You Had Me at Woof, about relationships with dogs, Klam now turns her attention to human relationships to great effect. She examines everything—from the curious world of online friendship to the intersection of friendship and motherhood. She even explores how to hang on to our friendships in the toughest circumstances: when schadenfreude rears its ugly head or when we don’t like our friend’s mate. Klam relays a mix of brand-new and time-tested wisdom—she finds that longtime friends really can grow up without growing apart; that communication is key; that friendship is one of life’s great, free sources of happiness; that you’re not a friend, just a doormat, if you don’t get back what you give—and her discoveries range from amusing to deeply important. Charming, bracingly honest, and compulsively readable, Friendkeeping is an irresistible book, a treat that you’ll want to share with your best friends right away. Brimming with keen observations and laugh-out-loud moments, it’s delivered in the lively, accessible voice that Julie Klam’s readers have come to know and love.

Book Dear Friend You Must Change Your Life

Download or read book Dear Friend You Must Change Your Life written by Ada Bronowski and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-02-20 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Dear Friend, you must change your life, we see some of the most fascinating thinkers in history at their most private and profound, reaching out to a friend, sharing, testing, confirming discoveries about the complexity of life, how to rise above its hardships and enjoy its pleasures. We see writers embrace the roots of philosophical thought afresh, by grappling with real, lived experience, giving us unique insight into their ideas and worldviews that their more polished, public work often does not provide. We see artists sound the foundations of their artistic and moral integrity. Ranging from Seneca and Marcus Aurelius to Flora Tristan and Walter Benjamin, to Elizabeth of Bohemia and Giacomo Leopardi, to Mahatma Gandhi and Maurice Béjart, we see how the philosophical letter as a form of thinking, and thinking freely, spans across the ages and often forms some of the most interesting and lively of philosophical writings. Each letter is given a contextualising preface by an expert that brings out the reason this particular letter is a philosophical letter for life. As such, Dear Friend, you must change your life provides a unique introduction to an array of thinkers throughout history as well as an argument for philosophy as conversation, a conversation which has been ongoing for centuries.

Book Political Theory and the Displacement of Politics

Download or read book Political Theory and the Displacement of Politics written by Bonnie Honig and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2023-03-15 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political Theory and the Displacement of Politics, originally published in 1993, has been called a founding text of agonism, which treats political contestation not as a regrettably necessary way to correct political imperfections but as a necessary, sometimes joyful feature of democratic life. As Bonnie Honig writes in the preface to this thirtieth anniversary edition, "the agonism that informs this book is democratic: it is committed to shared spaces and relational practices in which diverse groups and individuals set and reset the terms of living together as equals." By rethinking the established relation between politics and political theory, Honig argues that political theorists of opposing positions often treat political theory less as an exploration of politics than as a series of devices for its displacement. She characterizes Kant, Rawls, and Sandel as virtue theorists of politics, arguing that they rely on principles of right, rationality, community, and law to protect their political theories from the conflict and uncertainty of political reality. Drawing on Nietzsche and Arendt as well as Machiavelli and Derrida, Honig instead explores an alternative politics of virtú, which treats the disruptions of political order as valued sites of democratic freedom and individuality.

Book More Radical Hermeneutics

Download or read book More Radical Hermeneutics written by John D. Caputo and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2000-07-22 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these spirited essays, John D. Caputo continues the project he launched with Radical Hermeneutics of making hermeneutics and deconstruction work together. Caputo claims that we are not born into this world hard-wired to know Being, Truth, or the Good, and we are not vessels of a Divine or other omnipotent supernatural force. Focusing on how various contemporary philosophers develop aspects of this fragmented view of the life world in areas such as madness, friendship, democracy, gender, science, the "end of ethics," religion, and mysticism, this animated study by one of America's leading continental philosophers shakes the foundations of religion and philosophy, even as it gives them new life.

Book On Passivity

  • Author : Nicholas J. Pappas

Download or read book On Passivity written by Nicholas J. Pappas and published by Algora Publishing. This book was released on 2021-05-01 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it always better to be active than passive? Is passivity a sign of cowardice - or prudence? Are people who keep their thoughts to themselves passive, or might they be actively preparing for well-considered future actions? Seemingly simple concepts turn out to be deeper and more significant than they first appear. Have you ever been accused of being passive? Do you feel as though you think too much and don’t act enough? Have you wondered if thinking in itself constitutes doing something? This book explores active and passive behaviors and the relationship of each to thought—good, bad or otherwise. In keeping with a long dialogic tradition, On Passivity encourages complex thought in the context of a simple setting. The two main characters, Director and Friend, explore the idea of passivity while attending a wedding reception. Throughout the dialogue they explore these core questions: • What is passivity and is it inherently bad? • How do we demonstrate both active and passive thought? • Why should we concentrate on thought? Director and Friend go beyond a definition of passivity and investigate the role thought plays in both passivity and activity. Is thinking doing nothing? What is thought? Are we passive when we think, only to become active when we ‘do’? How do we bridge the gap between activity and passivity? The role thought plays in gaining knowledge, reasoning, telling the truth, and living life are concepts disassembled and reassembled in a courageous way. Can we be true to ourselves and accepted for what we choose to ‘do’ even if it seems passive to those around us? As the book ends, we see a glimpse of how scary it might be if everyone were active all the time. In brief, we’re left rethinking everything.
