Download or read book Computer Programming in Quantitative Biology written by R.G. Davies and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer Programming in Quantitative Biology covers the general background of Fortran coding and the more sophisticated computer programs likely to be encountered in quantitative biology. It discusses the application of over 40 appropriate and easily adaptable programming techniques to problems of major biological interest. Organized into 15 chapters, the book starts by providing an introductory outline of computer structure and function needed to appreciate many basic programming procedures. A chapter discusses some general principles underlying Fortran coding and the use of digital computers, with emphasis on major features of Fortran IV. Other chapters present short introduction to the statistical or mathematical techniques in each of the main sections under which program are described. These chapters also provide some aspects of matrix algebra that are essential for serious statistical programming and offer a general guide to efficiency in programming. All complete programs are accompanied by a flowchart and a detailed discussion. This book is a valuable source of information for biologists, computational biologists, research biologists, undergraduate students, and advanced or specialized students of biology.

Download or read book Research Software Engineering with Python written by Damien Irving and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-08-06 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing and running software is now as much a part of science as telescopes and test tubes, but most researchers are never taught how to do either well. As a result, it takes them longer to accomplish simple tasks than it should, and it is harder for them to share their work with others than it needs to be. This book introduces the concepts, tools, and skills that researchers need to get more done in less time and with less pain. Based on the practical experiences of its authors, who collectively have spent several decades teaching software skills to scientists, it covers everything graduate-level researchers need to automate their workflows, collaborate with colleagues, ensure that their results are trustworthy, and publish what they have built so that others can build on it. The book assumes only a basic knowledge of Python as a starting point, and shows readers how it, the Unix shell, Git, Make, and related tools can give them more time to focus on the research they actually want to do. Research Software Engineering with Python can be used as the main text in a one-semester course or for self-guided study. A running example shows how to organize a small research project step by step; over a hundred exercises give readers a chance to practice these skills themselves, while a glossary defining over two hundred terms will help readers find their way through the terminology. All of the material can be re-used under a Creative Commons license, and all royalties from sales of the book will be donated to The Carpentries, an organization that teaches foundational coding and data science skills to researchers worldwide.
Download or read book Data Analysis Using SQL and Excel written by Gordon S. Linoff and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-09-16 with total page 698 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Useful business analysis requires you to effectively transform data into actionable information. This book helps you use SQL and Excel to extract business information from relational databases and use that data to define business dimensions, store transactions about customers, produce results, and more. Each chapter explains when and why to perform a particular type of business analysis in order to obtain useful results, how to design and perform the analysis using SQL and Excel, and what the results should look like.
Download or read book A Study in Computer Aided Aerospace Vehicle Design written by Dale Eugene Calkins and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analytical study in computer-aided vehicle design is presented. The vehicle under study is the Unlimited Competition Racing Hydroplane, and the design objective is to obtain maximum lift/drag ratio in addition to adequate pitch plane stability. After discussion of the design concept, the mathematical model used to represent the aerodynamics and hydrodynamics of the configuration is developed. The mathematical model is then programmed for solution on a digital computer and an optimization study is performed. It is concluded that a tentative preliminary configuration is obtained through computer-aided design, but that the complexity of the concept will require further tow tank and wind tunnel model tests. Download or read book An Introduction to MATLAB for Behavioral Researchers written by Christopher R. Madan and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2013-12-18 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MATLAB is a powerful data analysis program, but many behavioral science researchers find it too daunting to learn and use. An Introduction to MATLAB for Behavioral Researchers is an easy-to-understand, hands-on guide for behavioral researchers who have no prior programming experience. Written in a conversational and non-intimidating style, the author walks students—step by step—through analyzing real experimental data. Topics covered include the basics of programming, the implementation of simple behavioral analyses, and how to make publication-ready figures. More advanced topics such as pseudo-randomization of trial sequences to meet specified criteria and working with psycholinguistic data are also covered. Interesting behavioral science examples and datasets from published studies, such as visualizing fixation patterns in eye-tracking studies and animal search behavior in two-dimensional space, help develop an intuition for data analysis, which is essential and can only be developed when working with real research problems and real data.
