Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great French Painters: And the Evolution of French Painting From 1830 to the Present Day Ome explanation will be necessary to justify the composition of this book. Its programme is vast; it is to compress into a rapid sketch seventy years that have given to the French School some of its greatest masters and an imposing number of artists of high merit. In what spirit, in what order are we to consider them? This, for the sake of clearness, had better be defined at the outset. Book Modern French Masters Classic Reprint

Download or read book Modern French Masters Classic Reprint written by Marie Von Vorst and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern French Masters The source of art is the fountain of Love: the Winged spirits, Painting, Sculpture, and Poetry, spring from it hand in hand. With affectionate leave-takings and cries of joy at their liberation, they soar into space, the angel of Music out-winging the rest because of more lambent fibre, but she is no more vital nor pulsating than her sisters. Genius is Love, Talent is the sure perception of essentials combined with the power of expression. Talent, coupled with genius, produces the Love-Child that men call a Masterpiece. The love-child in Art is the most perfect of all human creations, whether the artist lover be conventional or academic, or rebellious against form and schools, or capricious and eccentric. Emerson said: "Write above your door the word, 'Whim.'" About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The French Revolution as Blasphemy

Download or read book The French Revolution as Blasphemy written by William L. Pressly and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Pressly presents for the first time a close analysis of two important, neglected paintings, arguing that they are among the most extraordinary works of art devoted to the French Revolution. Johan Zoffany's Plundering the King's Cellar at Paris, August 10, 1792, and Celebrating over the Bodies of the Swiss Soldiers, both painted in about 1794, represent events that helped turn the English against the Revolution. Pressly places both paintings in their historical context—a time of heightened anti-French hysteria—and relates them to pictorial conventions: contemporary history painting, the depiction of urban mobs in satiric and festival imagery, and Hogarth's humorous presentation of modern moral subjects, all of which Zoffany adopted and reinvented for his own purposes. Pressly relates the paintings to Zoffany's status as a German-born Catholic living in Protestant England and to Zoffany's vision of revolutionary justice and the role played by the sansculottes, women, and blacks. He also examines the religious dimension in Zoffany's paintings, showing how they broke new ground by conveying Christian themes in a radically new format. Art historians will find Pressly's book of immense value, as will cultural historians interested in religion, gender, and race.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Painting in France, After the Decline of Classicism Modernism are all Protestant; or, perhaps, a more accurate statement of the case would be this Romanticism and Realism were Protestant, but Mod ernism is so entirely independent of Classicism as to have not even the idea of protesting against it. Meanwhile Classicism is forced to accept - which it does with loud complaints and many an anathema the position of one of the art religions instead of Me art religion; and it may maintain this kind of exis tence for a long time to come, shorn of all authority to punish heterodoxy, and compelled to see hetero doxy lifting its many heads in bold independence, yet still supported by venerable usage, and by the devotion of faithful adherents. Book Contemporary French Painters an Essay Classic Reprint

Download or read book Contemporary French Painters an Essay Classic Reprint written by Philip Gilbert Hamerton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-31 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contemporary French Painters an Essay Since the publication of A Painter's Camp, the author's labors, as a writer on art, have been confined to occasional articles in various periodicals, and the art-criticism in the Saturday Review. Projects of a more important kind have been entertained in this interval; but, with one exception, have always been abandoned for the same reason, - the difficulty of writing anything of use without illustrations so nu merous and costly as to alarm the prudence even of liberal publishers. The present Essay, in which there is little detailed description of works that the reader has not seen, and which is accompanied by illustra tions sufficiently abundant to give a good idea of some of the principal artists mentioned, is a realiza tion of the author's wishes, so far as is compatible with the smallness of its scale and the imperfections of his knowledge. It appears to be more and more evident that criticisms of pictures which the reader has not seen are of no use, and that it is a waste of time to write them. This discouraging fact has not. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jacques Louis David and the French Revolution Servan, painted about impresses one as a composition of statu esque simplicity expressing the salient spirit Of a period which was seek ing fundamentally new doctrines by which to govern life. The portrait by Rigaud, the famous court painter of the reign of Louis XIV, painted in the beginning of the century, and Of Boucher's portrait of Madame de do not differ too much from another in style. Rococo period the surface is filled with a restle lines; light and shadow are alternated perpetually at close intervals; the colors form a pleasing pattern of small variegated patches, and the costume and accessories almost eclipse the real motif - that of portraiture. In David's canvas the fig ure emerges Clearly from a wide and empty space, and a clear, flowing line with definite horizontals and verticals has replaced the tortuous curves. It seems an extraordinary piece Of daring for the artist to have composed in these broad planes with a completely empty background, when we consider the century-old tradition embodied in the Older paint ings.rit was the French Revolution, with its rejection of old formulas which inspired this daring.
