Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from French Exiles of Louisiana Tyranny doth justice spurn, Transforms a vase into an urn; Thanks, that from the blood of hero slain, Liberty springs to life again. The People vs. The King. The Duke of Wellington cost England, in the shape of pay, pensions, etc., the sum of fourteen millions of dollars. The parliamentary returns of March 23, 1S47, give the annual direct cost of royalty in England, the enormous sum of three millions eight hundred and forty-five thousand eight hundred and twenty-five dollars. The whole landed estate of England is in the hands of thirty thousand proprietors; Scotland, three thousand; Ireland, about six thousand. The lands belong to the aristocratic class, and are nearly exempt from taxation. In the report of 1847, the whole amount of land tax in Great Britain, was the sum of five millions nine hundred and fifteen thousand dollars, while the merchants, farmers, and the industrial classes, of every description, paid the sum of two hundred and forty-seven millions one hundred and sixty thousand dollars. In the above sum of money that is required to support royalty, there is an item of over one million of dollars for the private purse of the Queen. A verse from the national song of England: God save the king! Send him victorious, Soon to reign over us; God save the king! There are two chapters in the history of England that present two pictures. The one is full of joy, the other sorrow. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bonaventure: A Prose Pastoral of Acadian Louisiana Bayou Techs Is the dividing line. On its left is the land of bayous, lakes, and swamps; on its right, the beautiful short-turfed prairies of Western Louisiana. The Vermilion River divides the vast prairie into the countries of Attakapas on the east and Opelousas on the west. On its west bank, at its head of navigation, lies the sorry little town of Vermilionville, near about which on the north and east the prairie rises and falls with a gentle swell, from whose crests one may, as from the top of a wave, somewhat overlook the surrounding regions. Until a few years ago, stand on whichever one you might, the prospect stretched away, fair and distant, . in broad level or gently undulating expanses of crisp, compact turf, dotted at remote intervals by farms, each with its low-roofed house nestled in a planted grove of oaks, or, oftener, Pride of China trees. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Quadroon, or a Lover's Adventures in Louisiana The book is founded upon actual experience. It was written many years ago, and would have been then published, but for the interference of a well-known work, which treated of similar scenes and subjects. That work appeared just as the quadroon was about to be put to press; and the author of the latter, not willing to risk the chances of being considered an imitator, had determined on keeping the quadroon from the public. Book excerpt: Reissued for the first time in over thirty years, Black New Orleans explores the twenty-year period in which the city’s black population more than doubled. Meticulously researched and replete with archival illustrations from newspapers and rare periodicals, John W. Blassingame’s groundbreaking history offers a unique look at the economic and social life of black people in New Orleans during Reconstruction. Not a conventional political treatment, Blassingame’s history instead emphasizes the educational, religious, cultural, and economic activities of African Americans during the late nineteenth century. “Blending historical and sociological perspectives, and drawing with skill and imagination upon a variety of sources, [Blassingame] offers fresh insights into an oft-studied period of Southern history. . . . In both time and place the author has chosen an extraordinarily revealing vantage point from which to view his subject. ”—Neil R. McMillen, American Historical Review

Download or read book Eight Days in New Orleans in February 1847 Classic Reprint written by Albert James Pickett and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eight Days in New-Orleans in February, 1847 A few years after this period, a body of Jesuit priests and nuns arriving from France, gave a new impetus to the town. They made a most fortunate location, and their property greatly augmented in value But these pious adventurers were also to be disturbed. 'the Pope of Rome not only expelled that sect from Europe, but pursued them in American exile. Their property in New Orleans, va riously estimated to be worth now, from fifteen to thirty millions, was then confiscated and sold for one hundred and eighty thousand dollars. These unfortunate people still further had to satisfy the tyrannical decree to the full measure, by leaving Louisiana! Fifty-one years elapsed fi'om the settlement of Orleans until it was visited by that dreadful disease, the yellow fever, and we may as cribe that affiiction, as we may do many other entailed evils, to the English. They introduced it by importing to Louisiana a cargo of slaves; and now these philanthropists would be willing to see our nation exterminated, and our throats cut, because we are pursuing a system of mild domestic slavery, when they imposed it upon us in the most heartless and aggravated form, by kidnapping and robbery! But I am digressing. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Acadian Diaspora

  • Author : Christopher Hodson
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press

Download or read book The Acadian Diaspora written by Christopher Hodson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-05-01 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Late in 1755, an army of British regulars and Massachusetts volunteers completed one of the cruelest, most successful military campaigns in North American history, capturing and deporting seven thousand French-speaking Catholic Acadians from the province of Nova Scotia, and chasing an equal number into the wilderness of eastern Canada. Thousands of Acadians endured three decades of forced migrations and failed settlements that shuttled them to the coasts of South America, the plantations of the Caribbean, the frigid islands of the South Atlantic, the swamps of Louisiana, and the countryside of central France. The Acadian Diaspora tells their extraordinary story in full for the first time, illuminating a long-forgotten world of imperial desperation, experimental colonies, and naked brutality. Using documents culled from archives in France, Great Britain, Canada, and the United States, Christopher Hodson reconstructs the lives of Acadian exiles as they traversed oceans and continents, pushed along by empires eager to populate new frontiers with inexpensive, pliable white farmers. Hodson's compelling narrative situates the Acadian diaspora within the dramatic geopolitical changes triggered by the Seven Years' War. Faced with redrawn boundaries and staggering national debts, imperial architects across Europe used the Acadians to realize radical plans: tropical settlements without slaves, expeditions to the unknown southern continent, and, perhaps strangest of all, agricultural colonies within old regime France itself. In response, Acadians embraced their status as human commodities, using intimidation and even violence to tailor their communities to the superheated Atlantic market for cheap, mobile labor. Through vivid, intimate stories of Acadian exiles and the diverse, transnational cast of characters that surrounded them, The Acadian Diaspora presents the eighteenth-century Atlantic world from a new angle, challenging old assumptions about uprooted peoples and the very nature of early modern empire.

Book Classic Restaurants of New Orleans

Download or read book Classic Restaurants of New Orleans written by Alexandra Kennon and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A culinary history of some of the Crescent City’s best restaurants through the years, featuring delicious recipes you can make at home. Every New Orleanian knows Leah Chase’s gumbo, but few realize that the Freedom Fighters gathered and strategized over bowls of that very dish. Or that Parkway’s roast beef po-boy originated in a streetcar conductors’ strike. In a town where Antoine’s Oysters Rockefeller is still served up by the founder’s great-great-grandson, discover the chefs and restaurateurs who kept their gas flames burning through the Great Depression and Hurricane Katrina. Author Alexandra Kennon weaves the classic offerings of Creole grande dames together with contemporary neighborhood staples for a guide through the Crescent City's culinary soul. From Brennan’s Bananas Foster to Galatoire’s Soufflé Potatoes, this collection also features a recipe from each restaurant, allowing readers to replicate iconic New Orleans cuisine at home. “I tip my toque to Alex Kennon for a captivating walk through New Orleans’ restaurant history—from the owners who preserved these houses of gastronomy to the legendary chefs who managed taste and flavor. As reflected through these pages, the Crescent City feeds the soul like no other place on the globe.” —Chef John D. Folse, Louisiana’s culinary ambassador to the world “The roux-spattered archives of Antoine’s, Arnaud’s, Parkway Bakery and Tavern, and other heavyweights are crammed with anecdotes, not to mention recipes, but that’s where Kennon’s highly unusual CV comes in. The editor/entertainer sifts through a century and a half of culinary histories to craft a compelling narrative rife with colorful traditions . . . Just as valuable are her expansive conversations with owners, chefs, bartenders, and oyster shuckers alike as they tote weighty reputations and make delicate changes with another century of success in mind.” —Country Roads Magazine “Within its pages, Kennon explores what it’s like to be part of the process of creating the thousands of memorable meals that have been served at some of the most beloved (and mostly family-run) restaurants over the decades.” —The Advocate
