Book excerpt: Excerpt from French Elements in Middle English: Chapters Illustrative of the Origin and Growth of Romance Influence on the Phrasal Power of Standard English in Its Formative Period Lacking, then, the definitive works in many aspects of the pro blem of French in uence in mide., we can easily see how defective and misleading the books of Thommerel 1, Dickmann 2, &c., are in professing to give an account of the rise of the English language. Morsbach's work on the origin of the new English literary lane guages has a most inviting title and a most disappointing content. Granting that the language of the earliest English documents of London is in substantial agreement with the language of Chaucer, when 'language is restricted to a basis of vowels, consonants, and in exions, how much further are we towards understanding the rise of that new English literary language, which was marked not merely by peculiarities of phonology and morphology, but by most extensive changes in phraseology, idiom, syntax? Book A Middle English Syntax

Download or read book A Middle English Syntax written by Tauno F. Mustanoja and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2016-08-18 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a good orientation into the history of English grammar, several books are indispensable. One of those is Mustanoja’s A Middle English Syntax. However, for a long time this work was not readily available; the present edition changes that. This is a fac simile reprint from the 1960 publication which appeared as volume XXIII in ‘Mémoires de la Société Néophilologique de Helsinki’, with a new Introduction by Elly van Gelderen. Compared to Old English, Middle English has fewer grammars and textbooks devoted to it. This book provides an interesting supplement by going deeper into certain questions and, especially, into exceptions. The book points out differences with Old English and certain peculiarities of the Middle English system. It was originally written for students of Middle English literature but serves a linguist well in detailed descriptions of the parts of speech, the use of the various cases, gender, and number. Word order, complex sentences, and conjunctions were meant to be dealt with in a second volume, which was never published.

Book excerpt: Essay from the year 1998 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, University of Münster, language: English, abstract: This paper deals with the influence of the French language on the English language. The English was replaced by the French nobility. A bilingual situation was predominant: Whereas people from the upper class spoke the French language, people from lower classes spoke English. The French nobility led a separate life from ordinary people. The English language was considered to be inferior to the French language, and only people like merchants who wanted to communicate with people from the lower classes had to know the English language.
