Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition of Part IV of "A New French Course" is designed for students who have completed a Junior, School Certificate or Intermediate course and are proceeding with their senior studies. There are twenty lessons in the book with an abundance of exercises in each. Many of the lessons lend themselves to an aural'...oral approach and if this method is used, many more exercises can be completed in class than if most of the lesson time is spent in writing. The following synopsis should prove useful to teachers and students. Each of the lessons contains* A dialogue/comprehension passage A grammar topic (with drill exercises) Verb drill-regular and irregular * A prose translation * A pronunciation exercise * A vocabulary topic * A set of revision exercises Each of the odd-numbered lessons contains: * An additional comprehension passage A composition exercise Each of the even-numbered lessons contains: * A reading passage A 'situation' segment A dictationAt the back of the book will be found additional comprehension exercises, as well as a comprehensive set of appendices summarising basic points of grammar. The vocabulary of the book is extended beyond the Fran9ais elementaire and incorporates many hundreds of new words that have been included in the lessons because of their high frequency in the language. With such a vocabulary at their command, students should be enabled to read widely in French. We owe a special debt of gratitude to Dr V. Sauran of the University of New South Wales, who wrote many dialogues used in the book. A number of passages used are drawn from public examination papers. Many of them have their source in newspaper and magazine articles. Despite our best efforts, we have not been able to trace the origin of some of these. We would be pleased to receive information about them so that due acknowledgement may be made. We are also indebted to Monsieur D. Vever, Director of Studies at the Alliance Française, for several valuable suggestions. We are hopeful that the book in this new edition will be welcomedlby teachers and that students will find the material offered both interesting and stimulating. R. S. Horan J. R. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book. which follows A New French Course Part 2, continues a program in French based on an aural-oral approach. The material and exercises all lend themselves to oral treatment in the classroom and similarly in the language laboratory. Like those of the first book, the lessons contain reading passages illustrating grammatical constructions. oral drill exercises. dictees, exercices de prononciation, questionnaire. and expressions for classroom and every day use. To develop the ability of students to express their own ideas in French, simple exercises in controlled composition have been included. A number of simple dialogues based on varied topics afford practice in common speech patterns. Every effort has been made to avoid overloading students with too much new grammar. Each new point is dti lied in varied forms, ensuring a growing confidence in its use. Language patterns introduced in Part I are constantly revised. With respect to verb tenses, only the Future and Perfect have been introduced, because it was considered that these, along with the Present and the futllr proche, were the tenses that students need most, at this stage, in a course centred on an oral approach. The vocabulary introduced in tbe book has been carefully selected, attention having been paid in particular Lo the official basic list of the Commission du Français elementaire. We would like to express our thanks to Monsieur M. Chicoteau. Senior Lecturer in French in the University of Queensland, and to Dr E. Goldstein, for valuable assistance in the preparation of the book, R S HoranJohn R WheelerOther Books in the French Course: French Course Part 1French Course Part 3French Course Part 4French Course Part 5French Course Part 6 - A French Vocabulary

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to provide an introduction to the study of the French language based largely on an aural-oral approach. For the student commencing the study of a foreign language, very little pleasure, and in many cases little benefit, is derived from translating into French whole sets of sentences and grammatical exercises. Hence this aspect of language work occupies only a minor place in this book which breaks with the traditional grammar and translation approach. The principal objectives are to get the student to understand the simple spoken word, to be able to say simple things with a reasonably good accent, and to comprehend what he reads. The lessons afford ample opportunity for practising oral techniques. The passages of French have been written to illustrate grammatical points, and questions in French bearing on these passages test the student's comprehension of the text and ability to give simple answers in French. Each lesson contains a dictée which consolidates the grammatical material presented. Common class-room commands and questions have been included so that as much French as possible may be used in the course of each lesson. Exercices de prononciation, which, it is hoped, will help students acquire a reasonably good accent, are included in the book. The various positions of the organs of speech for the production of the vowel sounds have been described briefly and as simply as possible. Many teachers will no doubt use the passages of French for class oral reading practice; we have therefore indicated liaison by using a suitable sign.To maintain the pupil's interest, the exercises in each lesson have been varied as much as possible. Simple exercises in sentence composition have been included to give the student practice in self-expression in French. The vocabulary used in the book consists principally of words appearing in the official list drawn up by the Commission du Français élémentaire. By limiting in this way the range of words met, we have ensured that the student learns the commonest words first. The amount of time available in the First Form for the study of French may vary considerably from school to school. Many classes will not commence French until the second term or later in the year. It is suggested therefore that, where all the material in the book is not covered in the First Form, it could be conveniently completed in the first term of the Second Form when the books would not yet be wanted by the new First Form students. We would like to thank Madame J. Radisson of the French Embassy and Dr E. Goldstein for valuable assistance in the preparation of the book. We would like to also express our thanks to Mr R. Mitchell and Mr K. Gilmour of Fort Street Boys' High School for their much appreciated help with the song settings. It is sincerely hoped that this book will provide students with a sound foundation in French which will enable them to further their study of the language.R.
