Book Invasive Aquatic Species of Europe Distribution Impacts and Management

Download or read book Invasive Aquatic Species of Europe Distribution Impacts and Management written by Erkki Leppäkoski and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global scale of alien species invasions is becoming more and more evident in the beginning ofthe new millennium. Though the problem ofbiological invasions became a rapidly growing research area, there are large gaps still, both geographically and the matically, to be filled in the near future. This book is the first attempt to provide an overall picture of aquatic species invasions in Europe. Its geographical scope stretches from Irish waters in the west to Volga River and the Caspian Sea in the east, and from Mediterranean in the south up to the Arctic coast of Europe. Not all parts of the continent could be equally covered, as in some countries species invasions are not studied yet. The book tends to represent the array of all major European aquatic systems on the broadest geographical and ecological scope possible from fully saline seas, semi-enclosed brackish water bodies and coastallagoons to freshwater lakes, major river systems and waterways. The key objectives include the present status and impacts caused by non-native aquatic species in European waters. Please note that lengthy species lists submitted for publication and additional informa tion were put on the Internet, as the electronical version of these tables benefits from computer assisted search for data (http://www. ku. lt/nemo/EuroAquaInvaders. htm). Altogether more than 100 scientists from 24 countries have joined to synthesize the available information on bioinvasions. However, the book does not claim to be fully comprehensive.

Download or read book Atlantic France written by RCC PILOTAGE FOUNDATION. and published by Imray Laurie Norie & Wilson. This book was released on 2018-05 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering the whole Atlantic coast of France, from Ouessant in the north to Hendaye on the Spanish border, this second edition of the RCC Pilotage Foundation's guide has been thoroughly revised and updated by Nick Chavasse who has taken his Bowman 40, Wild Bird, into every main port and a multitude of anchorages, including explorations up the numerous navigable rivers. The plans have been revised and improved throughout and the coverage has been extended to include large scale detail for key areas including Lorient and the Gironde. Coverage of the Brittany coast west from L'Aberwrac'h, so often the gateway to the Chenal du Four, is now extended to include the islands of Ouessant and Molène.Many of the new photographs are on-the-water images which are invaluable to the navigator, but this edition also continues to benefit from Patrick Roach's unique and informative aerial coverage. 'Atlantic France' is the authoritative cruising companion for this long and varied coastline with its sometimes-daunting tides and currents, and its publication has been welcomed both by first time visitors who are enjoying their first taste of the region and by old hands who are revisiting their favourite haunts.

Book Architecture and Urbanism in the French Atlantic Empire

Download or read book Architecture and Urbanism in the French Atlantic Empire written by Gauvin Alexander Bailey and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2018-06-06 with total page 619 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning from the West African coast to the Canadian prairies and south to Louisiana, the Caribbean, and Guiana, France's Atlantic empire was one of the largest political entities in the Western Hemisphere. Yet despite France's status as a nation at the forefront of architecture and the structures and designs from this period that still remain, its colonial building program has never been considered on a hemispheric scale. Drawing from hundreds of plans, drawings, photographic field surveys, and extensive archival sources, Architecture and Urbanism in the French Atlantic Empire focuses on the French state's and the Catholic Church's ideals and motivations for their urban and architectural projects in the Americas. In vibrant detail, Gauvin Alexander Bailey recreates a world that has been largely destroyed by wars, natural disasters, and fires – from Cap-François (now Cap-Haïtien), which once boasted palaces in the styles of Louis XV and formal gardens patterned after Versailles, to failed utopian cities like Kourou in Guiana. Vividly illustrated with examples of grand buildings, churches, and gardens, as well as simple houses and cottages, this volume also brings to life the architects who built these structures, not only French military engineers and white civilian builders, but also the free people of colour and slaves who contributed so much to the tropical colonies. Taking readers on a historical tour through the striking landmarks of the French colonial landscape, Architecture and Urbanism in the French Atlantic Empire presents a sweeping panorama of an entire hemisphere of architecture and its legacy.
