Book excerpt: Contrary to what many Australians believe, during 1942 Japanese submarines were active in Australian waters and Japanese spy planes made surveillance flights over our major cities. With enemy submarines patrolling off the Western Australian coast, Fremantle became an important international submarine base, the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. During the war Fremantle played host to over 170 Allied submarines, with submarines of the United States, British and Dutch navies making a total of 416 war patrols out of the port between March 1942 and August 1945. The secrecy surrounding the operation of the Fremantle submarine base meant that its existence was little known at the time and, until now, has been largely forgotten by history.

Book excerpt: Secret Fleets is the story of how, in World War II, the Western Australian port of Fremantle was secretly transformed from an isolated outpost of Australia to the most successful submarine base of its kind, second only in size to Pearl Harbour. The US Navy placed a number of 16mm cameras with colour film on some of their submarines based at Fremantle. Classified for 50 years the remarkable footage illustrates an extraordinary story of heroism and dramatic social and cultural change experienced by the local population.. Between 1942 and 1945, a secretive war was waged from an Australian base which caused enormous damage to the Japanese war effort. For fifty years the story remained untold. This is the story of how the sleepy port of Fremantle, in isolated Western Australia, was secretly transformed into a vital command centre for one of the most relentless campaigns of the war against Imperial Japan. It is also the tale of men who went to war in extreme circumstances. Men who risked their lives in the claustrophobic confines of that most feared and fearful of all naval craft - the submarine. Their world is brought to life through remarkable colour archive footage of the Fremantle submarines in action. Most of this material has not been seen since it was shot by American cameramen on board the submarines on patrol during the war.. Secret Fleets tells the untold story of the men and women who took part in this most clandestine war. It tells of their fears, their hopes and their tragic losses: not only for those who faced combat but also those that experienced the social and cultural upheavals behind the lines. Secret Fleets uncovers a long forgotten and neglected part of Australian, American, British and Dutch history. The reasons for the base remaining a virtual secret are many. Secret Fleets explains some of these circumstances. Including the geographical position of Fremantle, so far from the centres where history is written; the wholesale removal of virtually all evidence of the base's existence after the end of the war; and the fact that some of the activities originating from this base remained classified well after war's end.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From unpromising beginnings in March 1942, the Allied submarine base at Fremantle on the west coast of Australia became a vital part of the Allied offensive against Japan. Pushed back from the Philippines and the Netherlands’ East Indies, American submariners, accompanied by a small group of Dutch forces, retreated to Fremantle as a last resort. The location was chosen for its good harbor and the fact that it was outside the range of land-based Japanese aircraft. Unfortunately the base was also far from their patrol areas and supply lines, and it was difficult to reinforce should the enemy attack. Thanks largely to a welcoming civilian population, morale quickly improved. The hospitality and sense of belonging fostered by Western Australians became legendary among Allied submariners and remains central to their wartime memories. Perhaps as a result of such a positive experience, the Allied forces became much more successful in combat. Intertwining social and military history, Fremantle’s Submarines relates how courage, cooperation, and community made Fremantle arguably the most successful military outpost of World War II from the standpoint of troop morale.

Book excerpt: 'The story reaches out and grabs you by the throat' - Dr Clare Wright, historian and author of The Forgotten Rebels of Eureka The facts are shocking. The treachery is chilling. The fallout ongoing. This edition contains a new author note with shocking new material that has come to light as a result of the groundbreaking original publication. Investigative journalist Frank Walker's Maralinga is a must-read true story of the abuse of our servicemen, scientists treating the Australian population as lab rats and politicians sacrificing their own people in the pursuit of power. During the Menzies era, with the blessing of the Prime Minister, the British government exploded twelve atomic bombs on Australian soil. RAAF pilots were ordered to fly into nuclear mushroom clouds, soldiers told to walk into radioactive ground zero, sailors retrieved highly contaminated debris - none of them aware of the dangers they faced. But the betrayal didn't end with these servicemen. Secret monitoring stations were set up around the country to measure radiation levels and a clandestine decades-long project stole bones from dead babies to see how much fallout had contaminated their bodies - their grieving parents were never told. This chilling exposé drawn from extensive research and interviews with surviving veterans reveals the betrayal of our troops and our country. 'An amazing tale – utterly gripping, it reads like a thriller' - Jon Faine, ABC Radio Melbourne 'This book will contribute to a much greater awareness and perhaps much more action on this issue' - Fran Kelly, ABC Radio National 'Walker demonstrates powerfully why, regardless of the context in which the testing took place, the emotional legacy of Maralinga will linger in the Australian psyche, just as do Gallipoli, Bodyline and Singapore. The cost in terms of damage to health, the environment and public trust in government will remain with us for generations to come' - The Australian 'Shocking revelations...' - Margaret Throsby, Midday Interview, ABC Classic FM 'An extraordinary story – there are things here that would make your hair stand on end' - Philip Clark, ABC Radio Canberra 'This book should be on the school syllabus' - Andrew O'Keefe, Weekend Sunrise

Book The Pacific War

Download or read book The Pacific War written by William B. Hopkins and published by Quarto Publishing Group USA. This book was released on 2010-11-04 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This “important comprehensive study” of WWII in the Pacific examines the high-level decision-making and strategy that led to victory (Roanoke Times). Once the stories have been told of battles won and lost, most of what happens in a war remains a mystery. So it has been with accounts of World War II in the Pacific, a complex conflict whose nature is often obscured by simple chronological narratives. In The Pacific War, William B. Hopkins, a Marine Corps veteran of the Pacific war and respected military history author, opens the story of the Pacific campaign to a broader and deeper view. Hopkins investigates the strategies, politics, and personalities that shaped the fighting. His regional approach to this complex war conducted on land, sea, and air offers an insightful perspective on how this multifaceted conflict unfolded. As expansive as the immense reaches of the Pacific, and as focused as the most intensive pinpoint attack on a strategic island, Hopkins’ account offers a fresh way of understanding the hows—and more significantly, the whys—of the Pacific War.
