Book excerpt: "Although almost unknown in his lifetime, it was Gottlob Frege (1848-1925) who set the agenda for much of twentieth-century philosophy." "His 'concept script' overthrew Aristotle's long-established system of logic and underlies all subsequent developments in the subject. His radically new approach to the foundations of arithmetic, based on fresh definitions of the terms 'zero', 'one' and 'successor', revolutionized our understanding of mathematics. And his important insights into the nature of language and meaning provided the framework for Russell, Wittgenstein and twentieth-century linguistic analysis. In this superb survey of his evolving ideas, Anthony Kenny explains and assesses the full range of Frege's work and reveals why it still forms an ideal introduction to modern analytic philosophy. Even after seventy years, he concludes, Frege remains an absolutely central figure, one of those rare thinkers who wrote 'prose which is accessible and attractive on first acquaintance and yet which repays rereading over a lifetime'."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Russell Arg Philosophers

Download or read book Russell Arg Philosophers written by Sainsbury and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-07-13 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1999. The purpose of this series is to provide a contemporary assessment and history of the entire course of philosophical thought. Each book constitutes a detailed, critical introduction to the work of a philosopher of major influence and significance. Understanding a philosophical doctrine stands close to seeing its strengths and weaknesses, how best it could be defended and how best attacked. The author therefore has tried, not merely to state Russell’s philosophical doctrines, but also to appraise them: to determine, if possible, whether they are true, or at least what arguments tell in their favour, and what tell against them.

Book The Philosophy of Gottlob Frege

Download or read book The Philosophy of Gottlob Frege written by Richard L. Mendelsohn and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-01-10 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This analysis of Frege's views on language and metaphysics in On Sense and Reference, arguably one of the most important philosophical essays of the past hundred years, provides a thorough introduction to the function/argument analysis and applies Frege's technique to the central notions of predication, identity, existence and truth. Of particular interest is the analysis of the Paradox of Identity and a discussion of three solutions: the little-known Begriffsschrift solution, the sense/reference solution, and Russell's 'On Denoting' solution. Russell's views wend their way through the work, serving as a foil to Frege. Appendices give the proofs of the first 68 propositions of Begriffsschrift in modern notation. This book will be of interest to students and professionals in philosophy and linguistics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many philosophers, modern philosophy begins in 1879 with the publication of Frege's Begriffsschrift, in which Frege presents the first truly modern logic in his symbolic language, Begriffsschrift, or concept-script. Macbeth's book, the first full-length study of this language, offers a highly original new reading of Frege's logic based directly on Frege's own two-dimensional notation and his various writings about logic.

Book Plotinus Arg Philosophers

Download or read book Plotinus Arg Philosophers written by Lloyd P. Gerson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-08-21 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999. We are fortunate in possessing a fascinating document, The Life of Plotinus, written by the philosopher Porphyry, a pupil and associate of Plotinus for the last eight years of his life. The basic facts contained in this Life can be quickly recounted. Plotinus was likely a Greek born in Egypt in AD 205. It is possible, though, that he came from a Hellenized Egyptian or Roman family. In his 28th year, Plotinus discovered in himself a thirst for philosophy. This is a collection of his works- Ennead I contains treatises on what Porphyry calls “ethical matters”; Enneads II–III contain treatises on natural philosophy or cosmology, with some rationalizations for the inclusion of III. 4, 5, 7, and 8. Ennead IV concerns the soul; V Intellect or and VI being, numbers, and the One. The thematic unity of Enneads I, IV, and V is somewhat greater than the rest.
