Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tobacco use kills more people than any other addiction and we know that addiction starts in childhood and youth. We all agree that youths should not smoke, but how can this be accomplished? What prevention messages will they find compelling? What effect does tobacco advertisingâ€"more than $10 million worth every dayâ€"have on youths? Can we responsibly and effectively restrict their access to tobacco products? These questions and more are addressed in Growing Up Tobacco Free, prepared by the Institute of Medicine to help everyone understand the troubling issues surrounding youths and tobacco use. Growing Up Tobacco Free provides a readable explanation of nicotine's effects and the process of addiction, and documents the search for an effective approach to preventing the use of cigarettes, chewing and spitting tobacco, and snuff by children and youths. It covers the results of recent initiatives to limit young people's access to tobacco and discusses approaches to controls or bans on tobacco sales, price sensitivity among adolescents, and arguments for and against taxation as a prevention strategy for tobacco use. The controversial area of tobacco advertising is thoroughly examined. With clear guidelines for public action, everyone can benefit by reading and acting on the messages in this comprehensive and compelling book.

Why are you still smoking, even though you want to quit? Based on twenty years of research and hands-on work with countless smokers in his clinics at Columbia University and New York Presbyterian Hospital, Dr. Daniel F. Seidman understands that people smoke -- and quit -- for different reasons and what works for one smoker might not work for another. • Are you a Situational Smoker? Monitoring your reactions in different situations is a step toward permanently losing interest in cigarettes. • Are you a Worried-about-Weight Smoker? Properly using treatments like Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) can help you quit and get healthy in all aspects of your life. • Are you an Emotion-Triggered Smoker? Scheduling your smoking breaks and sticking to a rigid "smoking schedule" helps break the link between stressful situations and craving cigarettes. In a comprehensive, 30-day program, Dr. Seidman explains how to retrain your brain, take advantage of all the tools at your disposal, and end the month smoke-free and feeling stronger than ever!

Book Reducing Tobacco Related Cancer Incidence and Mortality

Download or read book Reducing Tobacco Related Cancer Incidence and Mortality written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-04-16 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death in United States, causing more than 440,000 deaths annually and resulting in $193 billion in health-related economic losses each year-$96 billion in direct medical costs and $97 billion in lost productivity. Since the first U.S. Surgeon General's report on smoking in 1964, more than 29 Surgeon General's reports, drawing on data from thousands of studies, have documented the overwhelming and conclusive biologic, epidemiologic, behavioral, and pharmacologic evidence that tobacco use is deadly. This evidence base links tobacco use to the development of multiple types of cancer and other life-threatening conditions, including cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. Smoking accounts for at least 30 percent of all cancer deaths, and 80 percent of lung cancer deaths. Despite the widespread agreement on the dangers of tobacco use and considerable success in reducing tobacco use prevalence from over 40 percent at the time of the 1964 Surgeon General's report to less than 20 percent today, recent progress in reducing tobacco use has slowed. An estimated 18.9 percent of U.S. adults smoke cigarettes, nearly one in four high school seniors smoke, and 13 percent of high school males use smokeless tobacco products. In recognition that progress in combating cancer will not be fully achieved without addressing the tobacco problem, the National Cancer Policy Forum of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) convened a public workshop, Reducing Tobacco-Related Cancer Incidence and Mortality, June 11-12, 2012 in Washington, DC. In opening remarks to the workshop participants, planning committee chair Roy Herbst, professor of medicine and of pharmacology and chief of medical oncology at Yale Cancer Center and Smilow Cancer Hospital, described the goals of the workshop, which were to examine the current obstacles to tobacco control and to discuss potential policy, outreach, and treatment strategies that could overcome these obstacles and reduce tobacco-related cancer incidence and mortality. Experts explored a number of topics, including: the changing demographics of tobacco users and the changing patterns of tobacco product use; the influence of tobacco use on cancer incidence and cancer treatment outcomes; tobacco dependence and cessation programs; federal and state level laws and regulations to curtail tobacco use; tobacco control education, messaging, and advocacy; financial and legal challenges to tobacco control efforts; and research and infrastructure needs to support tobacco control strategies, reduce tobacco related cancer incidence, and improve cancer patient outcomes. Reducing Tobacco-Related Cancer Incidence and Mortality summarizes the workshop.

Download or read book Freedom to Smoke written by Jarrett Rudy and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2005-09-30 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late Victorian era, smoking was a male habit and tobacco was consumed mostly in pipes and cigars. By the mid-twentieth century, advertising and movies had not only made it acceptable for women to smoke but smoking had become a potent symbol of their emancipation. From mass cigarette production in 1888 to the first studies linking cigarettes to lung cancer in 1950, The Freedom to Smoke explores gender and other key issues related to smoking in Montreal, including the arrival of "big tobacco," first attempts to ban the cigarette, wartime tobacco funds, French Canadian smoking habits, rituals of manliness, and the growing respectability of women smokers - none of which have been examined by historians. Jarrett Rudy argues that while people smoked for highly personal reasons, their smoking rituals were embedded in social relations and shaped by dominant norms of taste and etiquette. The Freedom to Smoke examines the role of the tobacco industry, health experts, churches, farmers, newspapers, the military, the state, and smokers themselves. A pioneering city-based study, it weaves Western understandings of respectable smoking through Montreal's diverse social and cultural fabric. Rudy argues that etiquette gave smoking a political role, reflecting and serving to legitimize beliefs about inclusion, exclusion, and hierarchy that were at the core of a transforming liberal order.

Book The Easy and Permanent Path to Freedom from Smoking

Download or read book The Easy and Permanent Path to Freedom from Smoking written by Walter Powrie and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2024-06-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dear Soon-to-be Ex-smoker, What if I told you that quitting smoking cigarettes or vapes could be as easy as snapping your fingers? A bold statement, but please bear with me. After 25 years of heavy smoking, I stumbled upon a path that led me to quit smoking easily, comfortably and permanently. Dumbfounded to my discovery, I was expecting nasty nicotine withdrawal cravings after smoking my last and final cigarette. Incredibly, there was none. Days would go by and I still had no need or desire to smoke. Even being around smokers had no effect on me. Astonishingly, I was immune to any influences that could lead me back to my old smoking habits. Ex-smokers confused me and most other quit-smoking books scared me During many years as a heavy smoker, I could not understand how some people could quit like it's nothing and how others like me were beyond hope. I would question ex-smokers and I would read all the books I could find on the subject. Sadly, most ex-smokers couldn't seem to articulate properly how they did it. Even worse, most books on quitting tried to scare me into quitting. It all seemed futile. I tried to quit so many times during my 25 years of smoking that I could not put a number to it. Years later, out of ideas and at my wit's end, I somehow started grasping what was actually going on beneath the surface. The magic was in a deep understanding of the realities surrounding smoking Like most smokers who try to quit, I would think it was just a matter of abstaining from smoking until the will to smoke left. This did not work at all. It was like trying to hold your breath with the hopes that you wouldn't need to breathe anymore. The truth is that real freedom from smoking only comes with a deep understanding of the grip smoking has on us. I explain this process to you using simple and clear terms and concepts. I also repetitively emphasize many of the concepts to ensure that there is no doubt about the information provided. Anyone can use my method, no matter who you are Whether you're 18 or 80 years old, you can use my method to quit easily, without fuss and permanently. Whether you smoke one cigarette a week or one hundred a day, my method will work for you. My method does not involve willpower, discomfort, hypnosis, props, pills or potions. It involves common sense and the expulsion of many myths when it comes to smoking. I show you how to completely disarm the hold smoking has over you. With smoking having no more place to hang on to, walking away is a natural result. LOOK! There are incredible benefits to being free of smoking The thought of quitting smoking can be daunting for most people, but quitting can be extremely rewarding to your life.
