This study utilized a mixed-methods design to examine if charter school leaders can support innovation in their schools in this era of accountability. Twenty-seven charter school leaders from San Diego County completed a 15 question Web-based survey. Results indicated charter school leaders felt the autonomy to support innovation in their schools, even though they felt accountability mandates influenced their decisions regarding educational programs and instructional practices. Barriers to implementing innovation were mainly budget and facilities. Additionally, charter school leaders supported the idea their schools were held accountable to the testing mandates.
