Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between parliaments and citizens is one of the least studied subjects in legislative studies, yet this is a crucial dimension to understand parliaments and the role they play in our political systems. Furthermore, this relationship has gained considerable visibility over the last decade thanks in part to the development of new media, but also as a reaction to the trends of political apathy. In a context of increasing political disengagement, parliamentary discourse shifted attention from the traditionally predominant relationship with government to the relationship with citizens. Issues of legitimacy became more directly associated with the link between parliament and citizens, resulting in investment in new and more complex mechanisms for contact with citizens, even in the more centralised systems. This book looks at a wide range of case studies across Europe and beyond, assessing overall strategies in the move towards stronger engagement with citizens. It assesses the extent to which the shift in discourse has led to actual changes in parliamentary practice. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of Legislative Studies.
Download or read book Political Parties Parliaments and Legislative Speechmaking written by H. Bäck and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In analysing speeches made by legislators, this book provides theoretical and empirical answers to questions such as: Why do some Members of Parliament (MPs) take the parliamentary floor and speak more than others, and why do some MPs deviate more than others from the ideological position of their party? The authors evaluate their hypotheses on legislative speechmaking by considering parliamentary debates in seven European democracies: Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Norway and Sweden. Assuming that MPs are concerned with policy-making, career advancement, and re-election, the book discusses various incentives to taking the floor, and elaborates on the role of gender and psychological incentives in speechmaking. The authors test our expectations on a novel dataset that covers information on the number of speeches held by MPs and on the ideological positions MPs adopted when delivering a speech.

The revised papers presented in this book provide the first cross-national assessment of the development of parliamentary politics in the region.

Book excerpt: This title examines parliaments in world history from the earliest parliaments in Iceland, the Isle of Man, and the United Kingdom, to more modern parliaments in France, New Zealand, Israel, Iran, Hungary, Jordan, Kuwait, Canada, Germany, Greece, India, Rwanda, Bangladesh, China, and Afghanistan. Different types of parliaments, such as the democratic Westminster model, are highlighted, as are different types of parliamentary structures, such as bi- and unicameral. The governments by which parliaments function, such as monarchies, democracies, and dictatorships, as well as different economic systems are examined, as are how parliaments and prime ministers are elected and cabinets are chosen and describes the function of each. Also examined is the role of political parties in the formation of a parliamentary government. Influential statesmen such as Charles de Gaulle, Lech Walesa, Helmut Kohl, Margaret Thatcher, and David Ben-Gurion are introduced, as are important works such as the Magna Carta, International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and the Inter-Parliamentary Union. Strengths and weaknesses of parliamentary systems are analyzed, and the citizen's role, rights, and responsibilities in both democratic and nondemocratic parliaments are also covered. Exploring World Governments is a series in Essential Library, an imprint of ABDO Publishing Company.
