Book Natural History of the Saint John River Valley Hardwood Forest of Western New Brunswick and Northeastern Maine

Download or read book Natural History of the Saint John River Valley Hardwood Forest of Western New Brunswick and Northeastern Maine written by Andrew Stewart MacDougall and published by Fredericton, N.B. : Canadian Forest Service - Atlantic Forestry Centre. This book was released on 1998 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report profiles the natural history of the rich hardwood forests of the middle St. John River Valley in New Brunswick and in the eastern section of Aroostook County, Maine. Section 1 defines what is meant by the St. John River Valley Hardwood Forest (SJRHF), describes the forest assemblage type in general, and outlines how that type differs from hardwood forest assemblages found in other regions of the Maritime Provinces. Section 2 describes the physical characteristics of the central St. John valley and the vegetation history of the area, from the beginning of the post-glacial period to the present. Section 3 profiles the life history characteristics of ground flora associated with temperate deciduous forest. Section 5 gives detailed descriptions of the rare vascular plant species associated with the SJRHF. The final section reviews conservation prospects for the SJRHF in New Brunswick based on current land use trends and makes management recommendations for its protection.

Book Fredericton New Brunswick and the St John River

Download or read book Fredericton New Brunswick and the St John River written by Fredericton Tourist Association and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fredericton, New Brunswick and the St. John River: For the Tourist and Sportsman Among the leading ratepayers of Fredericton to-day, and even among the leading defaulters, are to be recognized the lineal descendants of those who, when the colony was in its infancy, gave by their ability and culture the stamp of social refinement to the little city which-it has ever since retained. It would not be easy to find a place of similar size that contains within its quiet homes 'so much of genuine culture and unassuming self respect'as this unique, half modern, half ancient little town. Some of the reasons for this are apparent. Not only has it enjoyed from early times the advantage of being the governmental, judicial and Episcopal head of the province, thus numbering among its residents men of leisure and scholarly attainment, skilled in the social amenities, but it has always been an important educational centre. The University, the Normal School, the superb system of graded schools in the city - even the Military School, which assumes to teach the ruder ritual of war rather than the polished arts of peace - all these have done and are still doing their part to make the city worthy of its founders. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the time of the earliest European colonies, there were Irish settlers in the four provinces of Atlantic Canada--Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia. Despite the flow of Irish through Atlantic Canada, the early records of these immigrants are fewer and less informative than those of New England and New York from the same period. "Erin's Sons: Irish Arrivals in Atlantic Canada 1761-1853" goes a long way toward rectifying this problem. Author Terrence M. Punch has combed through a wide-ranging and disparate group of sources-including newspaper articles and advertisements, local government documents and census records, church records, burial records, land records, military records, passenger lists, and more-to identify as many of these pioneers as possible and disclose where they came from in the Old Country. These sources often contain details that cannot be found in Irish records, where few census returns survived from before 1901, and where Catholic records began a generation or more after their counterparts in Atlantic Canada.
