Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diminutive marvels of artistry and fine craftsmanship, portrait miniatures reveal a wealth of information within their small frames. They can tell tales of cultural history and biography, of people and their passions, of evolving tastes in jewelry, fashion, hairstyles, and the decorative arts. Unlike many other genres, miniatures have a tradition in which amateurs and professionals have operated in parallel and women artists have flourished as professionals. This richly illustrated book presents approximately 180 portrait miniatures selected from the holdings of the Cincinnati Art Museum, the largest and most diverse collection of its kind in North America. The book stresses the continuity of stylistic tradition across Europe and America as well as the vitality of the portrait miniature format through more than four centuries. A detailed catalogue entry, as well as a concise artist biography, appears for each object. Essays examine various aspects of miniature painting, of the depiction of costume in miniatures, and of the allied art of hair work.

Book MPs in Dublin

Download or read book MPs in Dublin written by E. M. Johnston-Liik and published by Ulster Historical Foundation. This book was released on 2006 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Irish Parliament met for the first time on June 18, 1264 at Castledermott and for the last time in the Parliament House, Dublin, on August 2, 1800. It had lasted for over 500 years, and from 1707 it was the only parliament in the British Empire with the medieval structure of King (represented by the Lord Lieutenant), Lords and Commons. Like the English/British parliament it only met regularly from the end of the 17th century. In 1692 Ireland had a minimal infrastructure; by 1800 it had become recognisable as the country in whose history and culture there is a continuing and irresistible tide of interest worldwide. Since its publication, "History of the Irish Parliament "has acquired an already legendary status. This companion volume looks at Irish society and the personal concerns which influenced the MPs. This volume will form a valuable reference work in addition and complementary to the "History of the Irish Parliament." The six-volume "History of the Irish Parliament 1692-1800" was published in 2002. The online resource is available at www.historyoftheirishparliament.com.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Hamilton, the eighth earl of Abercorn, preferred to live in a fine classical house built for him in Edinburgh in the 1960s by the eminent architect, Sir William Chambers, although he had considerable property about London and in Ireland. Although Abercorn was an absentee, the scale, the range and the substance of the correspondence he maintained with his Irish agents, reveals the extent and depth of his knowledge of life on the estates. Several agents kept him well informed and in the years between 1757 and the earlÃ?Â?Ã?Â-s death in 1789, one of them, also named James Hamilton, wrote very detailed letters that enabled the earl to make decisions on a wide variety of matters. They cover changing relationships with tenants and undertenants, efforts to promote the economic and social development of the estate, and the problems of his agents in coping with food crises and natural disasters.

Book Dugort Achill Island 1831 1861

Download or read book Dugort Achill Island 1831 1861 written by Mealla C. Ní Ghiobúin and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work traces the evolution of the settlement at Dugort from barren land to thriving village in a period of ten to twelve years. By the mid-1840s it was firmly established with its schools, reclaimed farmland and luxuriant crops. Secondary settlements were also established at Mweelin and on the island of Inishbiggle. However, very strong opposition to these developments came from the Roman Catholic archbishop of Tuam, and the priests he sent to the island. The great famine and its impact on the Mission, the departure of its founder Edward Nangle together with the falling off of voluntary contributions and emigration to the colonies and America, all contributed to the final collapse of this Protestant missionary experiment.

The study illustrates how this local community and Leslie's estate business suffered severely from the post-Napoleonic war recession and how this situation was exacerbated by the famine of 1817. It demonstrates Leslie's response to this recession and how he managed his estate business so that, unlike some of his contemporaries' estates, it did not drift towards bankruptcy."--Jacket.
