Book The Thlewiaza Seal Rivers

Download or read book The Thlewiaza Seal Rivers written by Fred Nelson and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2021-04-25 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author participated on 19 canoe trips in the wilderness of northern Canada. The trips ranged from 11 to 36 days and totaled about 4,500 miles. Most of the trips ended at either the Arctic Ocean or Hudson Bay. This book is about one of these trips that is better described as an adventure rather than a trip. You can read about the adventure in the warmth and comfort of your home. The six canoeists who participated in this canoeing adventure planned a 450 miles trip down the Thlewiaza River to the Hudson Bay and then north on Hudson Bay to Eskimo Point (presently Arviat). However, upon arriving at Nueltin Lake, they found that it was still covered with eighty miles of iced because it had been the coldest winter in forty years. Consequently, the canoeists worked their way seventy-fi ve miles overland to the North Seal River and then south on Hudson Bay to Churchill. The story tells of the many diffi cult portages, running extreme rapids in near freezing water, encounters with bears, and a night in a storm on Hudson Bay.

Book excerpt: "Taken as a trilogy, consent not to be a single being is a monumental accomplishment: a brilliant theoretical intervention that might be best described as a powerful case for blackness as a category of analysis."—Brent Hayes Edwards, author of Epistrophies: Jazz and the Literary Imagination In Black and Blur—the first volume in his sublime and compelling trilogy consent not to be a single being—Fred Moten engages in a capacious consideration of the place and force of blackness in African diaspora arts, politics, and life. In these interrelated essays, Moten attends to entanglement, the blurring of borders, and other practices that trouble notions of self-determination and sovereignty within political and aesthetic realms. Black and Blur is marked by unlikely juxtapositions: Althusser informs analyses of rappers Pras and Ol' Dirty Bastard; Shakespeare encounters Stokely Carmichael; thinkers like Kant, Adorno, and José Esteban Muñoz and artists and musicians including Thornton Dial and Cecil Taylor play off each other. Moten holds that blackness encompasses a range of social, aesthetic, and theoretical insurgencies that respond to a shared modernity founded upon the sociological catastrophe of the transatlantic slave trade and settler colonialism. In so doing, he unsettles normative ways of reading, hearing, and seeing, thereby reordering the senses to create new means of knowing.

For more than 100 years, Frederick & Nelson was much more than just a department store to the people of Seattleit was an icon. F&N, as locals referred to it, established the citys retail core, led the war-bond drive, acted as a civic booster, and pioneered a high level of benefits for its workers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new assessment of the unanswered questions surrounding Ted Kennedy and the death of Mary Jo Kopechne on a summer night in 1969. On July 18, 1969, Ted Kennedy drove his Oldsmobile 88 off Dike Bridge and into Poucha Pond in Chappaquiddick, Massachusetts, after a night of partying in nearby Edgartown. Kennedy was unharmed and returned to Edgartown as if nothing had happened. His cousin Joe Gargan was reportedly willing to take the rap for the wreck—but he was not going to be held responsible for a death. In the morning, a body was discovered in the back seat of the sunken car—the body of Mary Jo Kopechne, one of the six unmarried women at the party the night before. The Edgartown police chief charged Kennedy with leaving the scene of an accident that caused personal injury. Kennedy pleaded guilty to avoid a trial, but his sentence was suspended. The public did not understand this “accident,” and they demanded answers. The district attorney, Edmund Dinis, launched an inquest, but the proceedings were closed to the public. The mystery surrounding this incident still baffles some to this day. Why was Kopechne in the rear seat? Why didn’t Kennedy call for help after the crash? Why did Kennedy flee to Edgartown? Why was Rosemary Keough’s handbag found in the submerged, inverted car on the ceiling of the front-seat compartment? This compelling book proposes a new theory to answer all of these intriguing questions.

Book Colonial Chesapeake Families British Origins and Descendants 2Nd Edition

This book was released on 2017-04-18 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colonial Chesapeake Families: British Origins and Descendants Harrison Dwight Cavanagh The first edition was awarded the Sumner A. Parker Prize by the Maryland Historical Society in 2014. The second edition of this work features all descendants of Thomas Gantt I (b. Bullwick, N. Hants; to Md. 1654; d. Calvert County, 1692) and Ann Fielder (b. ca. 1662 Hants; d. Prince Georges County, 1726) in the first six to ten generations. Ann Fielder is an important new addition to American colonial Gateway ancestors. Her parents, Capt. William Fielder (ca. 16201679) of Burrough Court Manor and Marjorie Cole (16281699) of Lyss Abbey, Hants, have proven multiple royal and Magna Carta ancestral lines; sixty extensive British pedigrees are documented in these volumes. The name Fielder has been inherited in multiple generations of the Beall, Belt, Berry, Bowie, Calvert, Clagett, Denwood, Dorsett, Gantt, Jones (Somerset County), Parker (Calvert County), Smallwood, Smith (Calvert County), and Wight (White) Maryland families. In addition, this second edition contains important new research findings on the British origins of the Hatton-Domville and Brooke-Darnall families, as well as revealing the two lost Ann Bradfords of Prince Georges County. Colonial Chesapeake Families details the pedigrees of eighty-eight families, historical illustrations, portraits, documents, and coats of arms (where proven) are included. The publication of these volumes has been subsidized to make them more widely available to the thousands of descendants listed in their pages. And thanks to print on demand, Colonial Chesapeake Families will never go out of print.
