Following is a list of royalists and others who escaped the French Revolution for the safety of America. By the same token, the reader will encounter in 1794 Francois Vannier, who fled the insurrection of Toussaint L'Ouverture in Santo Domingo, taking up land in Monroe County, Pennsylvania. After the Louisiana Purchase, French expatriates served on Zebulon Pike's expedition, organized land companies in Ohio and elsewhere, established communities along the Mississippi, and served in the U.S. Army under Andrew Jackson. Still others, like Hector St. John de Crevecoeur, would write traveler's accounts of American life and culture. One even designed the plan for the new capital of the nation. This comprehensive work includes entire chapters on French soldier-settlers; the Huguenots; French travelers and their memoirs; the Bonapartes and other famous exiles; French settlements in Kentucky, Indiana, and Iowa; illustrious French members of the American Philosophical Society; and the French colony in Gallipolis, Ohio, and the ill-fated one in Asylum, Pennsylvania. Appended to the text, which places hundreds if not thousands of French émigrés in the United States at a particular moment in time, are an annotated bibliography, a list of French place names in America, and an index to names and subjects. Rosengarten's classic treatise on Franco-Americana following the War for Independence is the starting point on its subject and a good bet for any researcher with 18th- or 19th-century French ancestry.

Written by a French-born American anthropologist who has insider status among French Americans, The French in the United States offers a fresh look at the histories and experiences of French immigrants. In the foreign-born generation, a high degree of social integration into American society co-exists with the maintenance of a French identity which manifests itself in the areas of language, culture, and perceptions. The French heritage does not usually endure past the second generation, however, because its maintenance within the family is not adequately supported by collective efforts, due to a lack of cohesiveness among French-born individuals who have become permanent immigrants. A number of factors account for the foregoing: the small number of French natives in the United States, their scattered geographical distribution, the absence of spatially defined communities populated by direct immigrants from France, and a very high rate of intermarriage. Another important factor is the primarily individual nature of migration from France to this country since the last half of the 20th century, and a highly developed sense of self-direction in those who stay permanently. Their French identity must be regarded as cultural rather than ethnic: it is tied to a distant homeland, rather than to a group with territorial, institutional, and organizational identity in the United States. Lindenfeld delves into the makings of this French identity and distinguishes French immigrants from other Americans.

This is one of the examples cited in Richard Kuisel's engaging exploration of France's response to American influence after World War II. In analyzing early French resistance and then the gradual adaptation to all things American that evolved by the mid-1980s, he offers an intriguing study of national identity and the protection of cultural boundaries. The French have historically struggled against Americanization in order to safeguard "Frenchness." What would happen to the French way of life if gaining American prosperity brought vulgar materialism and social conformity? A clash between American consumerism and French civilisation seemed inevitable.
