Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lucy Ladelle has big dreams—bigger than the tiny island in Boston Harbor where she’s lived her entire life. But first she needs some moolah. So when a matchmaking service hires her as date bait, she jumps at the chance. She’ll meet a few men, flatter their egos, and give them a sense of hope so they’ll sign on as clients. It’s only temporary . . . and, anyway, this counts as acting, right? But Lucy’s first “date” goes down the tubes when she’s caught on tape by a sting-operation TV exposé on the sketchy matchmaking firm. And Lucy’s name—and fetching new sandals—are dragged through the mud. They practically accuse her of turning tricks. The only bright spot comes when, in the ladies’ room, she meets a larger-than-life woman who offers her a chance to audition for an actual Broadway show. Of course, the offer comes with a price. And before she knows it Lucy is juggling a surprising new romance and the professional chance of a lifetime—not to mention some very strange adventures.

But she can't convince her superiors to take it seriously. And then the danger follows her home.

Book Arabic in the Fray

Download or read book Arabic in the Fray written by Yasir Suleiman and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-22 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pre-modern period saw a background of inter-ethnic strife among Arabs and non-Arabs, mainly Persians. Starting from the symbolic and cognitive roles of language, Yasir Suleiman shows how discussions about the inimitability and (un)translatability of the Qur'an in this period were, at some deep level, concerned with issues of ethnic election. In this respect, theology and ethnicity emerge as partners in theorising language. Staying within the symbolic role of language, Suleiman goes on to investigate the role of paratexts and literary production in disseminating language ideologies and in cultural contestation. He shows how language symbolism is relevant to ideological debates about hybrid and cross-national literary production in the Arab milieu. In fact, language ideology appears to be everywhere, and a whole chapter is devoted to discussions of the cognitive role of language in linking thought to reality.

Book Theory of the Political Subject

Download or read book Theory of the Political Subject written by Sergei Prozorov and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-07 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Together these two companion volumes develop an innovative theory of world politics, grounded in the reinterpretation of the concepts of ‘world’ and ‘politics’ from an ontological perspective. Theory of the Political Subject continues the project of reconstruction of political universalism begun in Ontology of World Politics. Having redefined world politics in terms of the affirmation of the universal ontological axioms of freedom, equality and community in an infinite multiplicity of particular situations or ‘worlds’, in this book Prozorov focuses on the way this affirmation is actually practiced, analysing the conditions for the emergence within a world of the subject of its radical transformation. Drawing on the contemporary reassessment of the notion of the subject in continental political thought, particularly the work of Alain Badiou, Prozorov defines the political subject in terms of one’s subtraction from the positive order of one’s world, the weakening of one’s particular identity that makes possible one’s participation in the affirmation of the universal. The book proceeds with outlining the path of the political subject within its world, from the point of its inception to its confrontation with ethical, epistemic and other limits to its activity. This account of the subjective aspect of world politics also offers new and stimulating perspectives on such key issues of political theory as the relation of politics to human nature, the role of violence in politics and the conditioning of politics by philosophical or scientific knowledge. Systematic and accessible, these works will be key reading for all students and scholars of political science and international relations.

Download or read book The Seal Wife written by Kathryn Harrison and published by Random House. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stunning, hypnotic, spare, The Seal Wife is the masterly new novel by Kathryn Harrison, “a writer of extraordinary gifts” (Tobias Wolff). Set in Alaska in 1915, it tells the story of a young scientist’s consuming love for a woman known as the Aleut, a woman who never speaks, who refuses to reveal so much as her name. Born and educated in midwestern cities, Bigelow is sent north by the United States government to establish a weather observatory in Anchorage. But what could have prepared him for the loneliness of a railroad town with more than two thousand men and only a handful of women, or for winter nights twenty hours long? And what can protect him from obsession—obsession with a woman who seems in her silence and mystery to possess the power to destroy his life forever, and obsession with the weather kite he invents, a kite he hopes will fly higher than any has ever flown before and will penetrate the secrets of the heavens? A novel of passions both dangerous and generative, The Seal Wife explores the nature of desire and its ability to propel an individual beyond himself and convention. As she brilliantly reimagines the terrain of the Alaskan frontier during the period of the First World War, Harrison, a “master of her material” (Mary Gordon), also evokes early efforts to chart the weather and reveals the interior realm of the psyche and emotions—a human landscape that, in its splendor and terror, is profoundly and eerily reminiscent of the frozen frontier and the storms that scour its face.

When Eleazard begins editing a strange, unpublished biography of Kircher, the rest of his life seems to begin unraveling—his ex-wife goes on a dangerous geological expedition to Mato Grosso; his daughter abandons school to travel with her young professor and her lesbian lover to an indigenous beach town, where the trio use drugs and form interdependent sexual relationships; and Eleazard himself starts losing his sanity, escalated by loneliness, and his work on the biography. Patterns begin to emerge from these interwoven narratives, which develop toward a mesmerizing climax.
