The cast is of necessity a lengthy one, but it is _pos sible by duplication of characters to give it with a much smaller number. Suggestions along these lines are made on page 195. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Doctor Franklin "Franklin appreciated the devout and transcendent labors of such men as Jonathan Edwards, in laying the foundations, and could empty his pockets at the heart-stirring appeals of Whitefield. His friendships, in England and America, were with bishops and divines. The Bishop of St. Asaph, of Sodor and Man, no less than the Methodist Whitefield, were his friends; and he could cast an eye backward with affection and reverence from the glittering salons of Paris to the dark shades of Puritan ancestors. There was a sound vein of piety in his composition, which bore its fruits; nor had French levity, or companionship with the encyclopaedists, blunted his religious education. His warning hand, raised to Paine on the eve of his infidel publication, deserves to be remembered." - Duyckinck's Cyclopaedia. "One of the most grateful things in my experience among the middle classes in England, France, and Germany, is, that I have been there recognized as the countryman of Franklin, and by virtue of this, have been often received as a friend." - Goodrich's Recollections of a Lifetime. "Zealous theologians have attacked the orthodoxy of his creed; casuists have cavilled at the materialism of his ethical precepts; but he was doubtless a good man; he was unquestionably a great man, and he richly merits the title of 'the most useful man of any age' - a title which he would have envied beyond all the gifts of fortune and laurels of fame." - Macaulay. Download or read book The Battle of Franklin Classic Reprint written by John K. Shellenberger and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Battle of Franklin This monograph on the Battle of Franklin was read first at a meeting of the Minnesota Commandery of the Loyal Legion, December 9, 1902. Written after an exhaustive investigation begun many years before, the straightforward truth was told without fear or favor. The disgraceful and costly blunder with which the Battle of Franklin opened should have been investigated by a court of inquiry. The only action taken, however, was the deposing of Gen eral Wagner, the junior in rank and the weakest in influence among the generals implicated, from the command of his division, with the statement that the blunder was due to his disobedience of orders. With this action the matter was hushed up. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Benjamin Franklin There is an irresistible appeal to both young and Old in the figure of Benjamin Franklin. Whether we view him as the printer's appren tice in Boston, slipping his own contributions under the door sill, so that his brother might be fooled into publishing them; or the run away lad reaching Philadelphia by hook or crook, and walking down the main street eat ing a roll of bread, with another tucked under each arm, while his future wife laughed at him from a neighboring doorway; or the man of affairs busied with many things for the ad vancement of his adopted town; or the simply dressed American'st'anding unabashed before Lords and crowned heads, not afraid to tell them the truth; or as one of the drafters of the Declaration of Independence; or as an ama teur scientist dabbling with electricity - in these and many another situations he seems like a personal 'friend. His face and form have not been obscured by the cobwebs of history. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The True Benjamin Franklin Classic Reprint

Download or read book The True Benjamin Franklin Classic Reprint written by Sydney George Fisher and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-12 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The True Benjamin Franklin This analysis of the life and character of Franklin has in view a similar object to that of the volume entitled The True George Washington, which was prepared for the publishers by Mr. Paul Leicester Ford and issued a year or two ago. Washington sadly needed to be humanized, to be rescued from the myth-making process which had been destroying all that was lovable in his character and turning him into a mere bundle of abstract qualities which it was piously supposed would be wholesome examples for the American people. This assumption that our people are children who must not be told the eternal truths of human nature, but deceived into goodness by wooden heroes and lay figures, seems, fortunately, to be passing away, and in a few years it will be a strange phase to look back upon. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Benjamin Franklin And here let me with all humility acknowledge that to Divine Providence I am indebted for the felicity I have hitherto enjoyed. It is that Power alone which has furnished me with the means I have employed, and that has crowned them with success. My faith in this respect leads me to hope, though I cannot count upon it, that the Divine goodness will still be exercised towards me, either by prolonging the duration of my happiness to the close of life, or by giving me fortitude to support any melancholy reverse which may happen to me as to so many others. My future fortune is unknown but to Him in whose hand is our destiny, and who can make our very afflictions subservient to our benefit. Book The Pictorial Life of Benjamin Franklin Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Pictorial Life of Benjamin Franklin Classic Reprint written by H. Hastings Weld and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pictorial Life of Benjamin Franklin The life of Franklin, here presented, has been written with three leading objects: to bring forward important passages in his life, not usually introduced in abridgements, to give the juvenile reader the benefit of his good example, and to connect, as cause and effect, the errors in his life, which Frank lin himself ingenuously acknowledges, with the con sequences of those errors. We have not presented him as a perfect model for imitation, for such a model is to be found in no human being. Free use has been made of the autobiography left by himself, and of the continuation of his life by Sparks, Stuber, and others. It is believed, that while much that is interesting has been necessarily omitted for want of space, this little work contains the most essential facts in his life, and is the most complete abridged biography of Benjamin Franklin that has ever been published. Book Life in the War Zone

Download or read book Life in the War Zone written by Gertrude Franklin Horn Atherton and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1916 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PARIS, August 8, 1916. rance to-day is sharply divided into two sections; within the greater you can come and go almost as freely as before the war. All that is necessary is a sauf conduit easily obtained from your commissaire de police, which you are never called upon to exhibit. But the other, the Zone des Armées, in common parlance the war or military zone! There is only one thing in France more difficult of contact, and that is a member of the middle or lower bourgeoisie. For nearly three months now I have felt like an inverted snob trying to ingratiate myself with, or even to meet members, of that curious caste which exists only in France; a caste reserved, proud, suspicious, intensive, detesting foreigners only less than it does the aristocracy, and averse from variety of any sort. If you bring even one letter to society, either in France or any European capital, all doors are open to you, for society is accustomed to strangers and variety, and is often bored with itself; which the bourgeoisie, of France at least, never seems to be. So, if in the course of these and other letters, I allude, however casually, to princesses and duchesses, spare me the ready democratic sneer; but if, with affected indifference, I mention now and again a name without territorial significance, then, if you like, exchange derisive glances and exclaim: "Aha! So she has 'got there' and would have us believe she takes it as a matter of course." However-to return to the war zone.
