Book excerpt: Among the followers of St. Francis there were saints and teachers who were endowed by God with a natural and supernatural kinship with their holy founder. They developed the Franciscan spirituality which had its origin in the simple practical life and the rules of St. Francis; and they gave further, clearer expression to it both by their lives and their writings. Thus they pointed out the characteristic traits of Franciscan spirituality, both in a practical and a theoretical way. Concerning the distinctive features of Franciscan spirituality, as contained in the Franciscan tradition, suffice it to say that its essence is doctrinal Christocentrism and practical imitation of Christ, conformity with Christ, prompted by love. Distinctive aspects of Franciscan piety are childlike love of God, our Father, devotion to the Humanity of Christ, His Sacred Heart, the Holy Eucharist, the mysteries of the Nativity and the Passion, His Virgin Mother Mary, and reverence for the Catholic priesthood. Franciscan love of God finds expression also in charity to our fellowmen, understanding them as our brothers, especially in aid to the poor and sick and in apostolic zeal for souls, Christian and pagan. Total poverty detaches the Franciscan soul from creatures, but at the same time it recognizes God in created things and uses the latter to mount to God. Emphasis is placed on the will, and hence on love and action above speculation. The atmosphere in which the Franciscan spirit develops is one of individual freedom of the spirit, absence of coercive and confining methods, love of enterprise, and a sense of realism. On the path of this traditional Franciscan way of life many have attained sainthood. Thus, The Seraphic Order, which recounts their lives and virtues, can well serve as a practical textbook of Franciscan spirituality.

Bestul constructs the literary history of the Latin Passion narratives, placing them within their social, cultural, and historical contexts. He examines the ways in which the Passion is narrated and renarrated in devotional treatises, paying particular attention to the modifications and enlargements of the narrative of the Passion as it is presented in the canonical gospels. Of particular interest to Bestul are the representations of Jews, women, and the body of the crucified Christ. Bestul argues that the greatly enlarged role of the Jews in the Passion narratives of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries is connected to the rising anti-Judaism of the period. He explores how the representations of women, particularly the Virgin Mary, express cultural values about the place of women in late medieval society and reveal an increased interest in female subjectivity.

By 1588, the friars used these same strategies on behalf of the Catholic League to prevent the succession of the Protestant heir presumptive, Henry of Navarre, to the French throne. This book contributes to our understanding of religion as a formative political impulse throughout the sixteenth century by linking the long-term political activism of the friars to the emergence of the French monarchy of the seventeenth century. Book excerpt: "I begin with an analysis of the missionary ideals of Francis of Assisi in the context of earlier Christian missionary traditions and encounters with Islam. In my second chapter I examine the ways in which Franciscan hagiographers, including Thomas of Celano and Bonaventure, elaborated upon Francis's missionary experience, linking his mission and exposure to martyrdom with his reception of the wounds of the stigmata, establishing an enduring motif linking Francis with martyrdom. I then look at the missions of the early Franciscans martyred in North Africa in the 1220s, tracing the legacy of the Franciscan 'Protomartys' through the figure of St. Anthony of Padua, who converted to the order through their example. I show how thirteenth-century Franciscan martyrology intersected with crusading interests. Next I examine missions across Mongol Asia, c. 1290-1340. Focusing on the martyrdom of four Franciscans at Thana, India, I show how Franciscans translated this experience from India to Italy, noting the important role of the famous travelogue of Odorico da Pordenone, while distinguishing the different ways that the disputing factions of Spiritual and Conventual Franciscans appropriated these ideas at this time. In my last chapter I discuss missionary activities in Mamluk Egypt, Syria and the Holy Land, c. 1350-1440, charting the formation of a more aggressive promotion of voluntary martyrdom as demonstrated in the martyrdom of Nikola Taveliae and companions at Jerusalem in 1391, and in later reiterations of this approach by figures such as Alberto da Sarteano and those behind an anonymous Tractatus de martyrio, c. 1437. In an epilogue I trace out implications of this Franciscan martyrial tradition in two formal canonizations of Franciscan martyrs in 1481 and in 1970"--Pages ix-x.

Book excerpt: The legacy of late medieval Franciscan thought is uncontested: for generations, the influence of late-13th and 14th century Franciscans on the development of modern thought has been celebrated by some and loathed by others. However, the legacy of early Franciscan thought, as it developed in the first generation of Franciscan thinkers who worked at the recently-founded University of Paris in the first half of the 13th century, is a virtually foreign concept in the relevant scholarship. The reason for this is that early Franciscans are widely regarded as mere codifiers and perpetrators of the earlier medieval, largely Augustinian, tradition, from which later Franciscans supposedly departed. In this study, leading scholars of both periods in the Franciscan intellectual tradition join forces to highlight the continuity between early and late Franciscan thinkers which is often overlooked by those who emphasize their discrepancies in terms of methodology and sources. At the same time, the contributors seek to paint a more nuanced picture of the tradition’s legacy to Western thought, highlighting aspects of it that were passed down for generations to follow as well as the extremely different contexts and ends for which originally Franciscan ideas came to be employed in later medieval and modern thought.
