"Francis West, a house carpenter by trade, being a single man, invited by a Mr. Thomas of Marshfield, Massachusetts, left the town of Salisbury in England and came to N. England, and settled in Duxbury, Mass., and married Margrey Reeves, by whom he had five children, viz., Samuel, Thomas, Peter, Mary and Ruth." So wrote Judge Zebulon West (1707-1770), a great-grandson of the emigrant, who probably learned these facts from his father, also named Francis (1669-1731), who lived with the emigrant in Duxbury until he grew up. Francis West married Margaret Reeves, in Duxbury, Feb. 27, 1639, and died in that town, Jan. 2, 1692, aged 86. He is spoken of as a carpenter in the Duxbury records, and the Plymouth Colony records show that he made a pair of stocks for the town of Duxbury in 1640. In 1610 and 1642 he was a member of the Grand Jury; in 1642 he bought a house and land in Duxbury (Millbrook); and in 1643 he was on the list of those able to bear arms. He was admitted freeman in Plymouth Colony in 1656. In 1658 he was surveyor of highways in Duxbury; constable in 1661; and in 1662, '69, '74, '78, '80 and '81 was a member of the "Grand Enquest." During the last years of his life his son Peter took care of him, and his estate, which amounted to only 16: 15: 00, was given to Peter by the Probate Court. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Francis: Descendants of Robert Francis of Wethersfield, Conn;; Genealogical Records and Fragments of History of the Various Branches of the Francis Families of Connecticut Origin, Also Records of Some Other Francis Families Like the publication Of all family histories, this work has been largely a labor Of love.' NO one who has not given the sub ject thought can comprehend the difficulty Of gathering together the names and other items Of so many individual members Of the many families represented in a work Of this Character. Records Of towns have been searched; Old family Bibles have been interviewed; libraries Of several cities have been visited; church histories and town histories have been carefullv looked over; many authorities have been investigated, and numberless letters to correspondents have been written for desired informa tion, with a hope to make the work as complete and correct as possible. The author has found in some few instances dis crepancies Of date when comparing records Obtained from dif ferent sources. In such cases, however, those that have seemed the most authentic are herein quoted. The idea of bringing together records Of the scattered branches Of families descending from Robert Francis was first suggested on receiving an Old manuscript copy of the genea logical records Of Rev. James Hanmer Francis, born in vvethersfield in 1796, and who, many years ago, searched the records Of the town to trace his lineage. Soon after, the author corresponded with the late Rev. Dr. A. B. Rich, who had devoted a number Of years to an unsuccessful search for theviii the francis family. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Descendants of Samuel Hills: A Supplement to the Hills Family in America, W. S. Hills and Thomas Hills (Published 1906) IF it were not for the patience and generosity of Francis J. Hills Esq., of Rahway, N. J this book would never have become avail able. It is important to note that his earliest known progenitor, Samuel Hills of Duxbury, Mass., and Lebanon, Conn., wrote the final 8 to his surname. While some of the descendants changed the spelling, most of them, including Mr. Hills' branch, retained the original form. Samuel Hills was not a son of John Hill of Saybrook, Conn., nor was the latter a son of William Hills of Hartford, Conn., as has been claimed without evidence or proof. Of these facts I am certain. Throughout the text, reference is made to the Hills Notes, a typed manuscript, with many photostatic copies of original documents, which I compiled and which Mr. Hills has presented to the New England Historic Genealogical Society. Mr. Hills has particularly requested that full acknowledgement be accorded to the late William Sanford Hills and Thomas Hills for their Hills Family in America, published in 1906. I wish to thank Mrs. Charles D. Townsend of West Hartford, Conn., and Donald Lines Jacobus, m.a., of New Haven, Conn., for their able assistance in some of the local research, also Miss Marion C. Reed of Brookline, Mass., for her help in reading proof with me. Lexington, Massachusetts. Winifred Lovering Holman, s.e. January 1957. Book All Souls

Download or read book All Souls written by Michael Patrick MacDonald and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2024-08-20 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “All Souls is the written equivalent of an Irish wake, where revelers dance and sing the dead person’s praises. In that same style, the book leavens tragedy with dashes of humor but preserves the heartbreaking details.”—The New York Times Book Review A 25th anniversary edition of the National Bestselling memoir, with a new afterword from Michael Patrick MacDonald, takes us deep into the South Boston housing projects during one of the city's most tumultuous times in history and tells the story of his family struggling the overcome the poverty, crime, addiction, and incarceration that overtook the neighborhood. A breakaway bestseller since its first printing, All Souls takes us deep into Michael Patrick MacDonald’s Southie, the proudly insular neighborhood with the highest concentration of white poverty in America. Rocked by Whitey Bulger’s crime schemes and busing riots, MacDonald’s Southie is populated by sharply hewn characters. We meet Ma, Michael’s mini-skirted, accordian-playing, single mother who endures the deaths of four of her eleven children. And there are Michael’s older siblings Davey, sweet artist-dreamer; Kevin, child genius of scam; and Frankie, Golden Gloves boxer and neighborhood hero whose lives are high-wire acts played out in a world of poverty and pride. Nearly suffocated by his grief and his community’s code of silence, MacDonald tells his family story here with gritty but moving honesty. All Souls is heartbreaking testimony to lives lost too early, and the story of how a place so filled with pain could still be “the best place in the world.”
