Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoir of Francis Parkman Here young Parkman delighted to spend his leisure hours, learned to trap the squirrel and the woodchuck, and began that intimate acquaintance with Nature in her ruder aspects which was to stand him in such good stead in writing his histories. Here began or was developed that love of the wild wood and of all things that live or grow in it which in his life as well as in his books was one of his strongest characteristics. Years afterward, when visiting a friend residing in the country, the thing he found most to admire in the house, that which interested him most, was a rug made of the skins of three raccoons that had been trapped on the premises. He seemed never to tire of contemplating the three tails of the wild creatures as they lay side by side on the floor, reconstructing in his mind, no doubt, their agile former owners, and following them in imagination to their secret haunts among the rocks and trees, or accompanying them on predatory excursions to neighboring hen-yards. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Life of Francis Parkman Second, Parkman gave an example in his own person of the utmost thoroughness and sincerity. I am convinced that he would desire his biography to be written, if at all, in the frankest way. Also, he has put himself on record in two auto biographic letters, as if wishing to make his experience useful to any student who should meet with unusual difficulties. To this end he wrote of his conditions and trials with a fulness that he never even approached in daily inter course with friends. Finally, there is nothing to hide in writing Parkman's life, and it would thus appear that his biography should be as free as was his character from all shams and concealment. This was the school of the woods, where he picked up all sorts of lore about trees, stones, beasts and birds, which helped mightily in making real and vivid the background of the histories he was to write. After four years in the coun try he went back to Boston to live With his parents; and he entered Harvard at the age of seventeen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Francis Parkman: A Sketch I remember, he says in the preface to The Oregon Trail, as we rode by the foot of Pike's Peak, when for a fortnight we met no face of man, my companion remarked, in a tone anything but compla (4 cent, that a time would come when those plains would be a grazing country, the buffalo give place to tame cattle, houses be scattered along the water courses, and wolves, bears, and Indians be numbered among the things that were. \ve condoled with each other on so melancholy a prospect, but with little thought what the future bad in store. We knew that there was more or less gold in the seams of those untrodden mountains, but we did not foresee that it would build cities in the West, and plant hotels and gambling houses among the haunts of the grizzly bear. We knew that a few fanatical outcasts were groping their way across the plains to seek an asylum from Gentile persecution; but we did not imagine that the polygamous hordes of Mormons would rear 11 swarming Jerusalem in the bosom of solitude itself. We knew that more and more, year after year, the trains of emigrant wagons would creep in slow procession towards barbarous Oregon or wild and distant California; but we did not dream bow Commerce and Gold would breed nations along the Pacific, the disenchanting screech of the 1000 motive break the spell of weird, mysterious mountains, woman's rights invade the fastnesses of the Arapahoes, and despairing savagery, assailed in front and rear, veil its scalp-locks and feathers before triumphant commonplace. Lve were no prophets to foresee all this; and, bad we foreseen it, perhaps some perverse regret might have tempered the ardor of our rejoicing. Squier With what was left of this same regiment, he followed Arnold again at Stillwater in that famous charge that altered the fortune of the day and led to the surrender of Burgoyne. Putnam, Parsons, and Webb were his friends, and he was a trusted agent on more than one difficult detail from Gen eral Washington himself. He served until the end of the war, and, returning to his farm, lived until he had passed his ninety-seventh year in 1842. Joel Squier, father of E. G. Squier, was a Meth odist clergyman, and the income of a wandering minister of that faith did not permit much outlay for tuition, so the boy educated himself between periods of farm labor and attended such schools as the rural districts afforded. He became a teach er first and then qualified as a civil engineer, but the panic period of 1837 rendered this occupation unprofitable. He turned to literary work and in 1841 became a special writer on the newspapers at Albany, and as his first independent venture edited The Poets' Magazine; a Repository of Original and Selected American Poetry. But two numbers, April and May, 1842, were issued. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
