Download or read book France Votes The Election of Fran ois Hollande written by I. Wall and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-08-05 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: France Votes analyzes the French elections of 2012 in the context of a France and Europe in crisis. With regard to the economy, Irwin Wall describes the ways in which the country's adherence to the common currency in the Eurozone has stripped France of its freedom of manouver. France Votes shows how a European-wide economic crisis was reflected in political crisis at home and the rise of new political extremism combined with mass disaffection from politics altogether. The result of all of this, posits Wall, is that France has become a no-choice democracy.

Book French Elections 2012 Francois Hollande

Download or read book French Elections 2012 Francois Hollande written by Hayley Igarashi and published by Hyperink Inc. This book was released on 2012-04-28 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK Francois Hollande is poised to take the reins of the French government, whether the rest of the world is aware of who he is or not. Put another way, Hollande could just be the next big thing to hit European politics. Rising out of an unenviable political past characterized by a seemingly equal mixture of defeat and triumph, he has quickly and efficiently inserted himself as one of the major frontrunners in the 2012 French Elections. At this point, only one man seems to stand in his way: incumbent French President Nicolas Sarkozy. As a French Socialist, Hollandes radical politics may be just what the French are looking for. He has recently promised that as president he would levy a staggering 75% tax on anyone making more than 1 million (equal to roughly $1.33 million) a year. This promise has proved to be wildly popular with the French people. Oddly enough, however, Hollandes politics may not be the problemit could be his personality. One word is consistently linked with Hollande and his public speaking: bland. While Sarkozy has been eager to point out the dullness of his opponent, even Hollandes supporters seem to agree that their candidate lacks a certain element of flashiness and excitement. Theyre calling Hollande Monsieur Normal, a nickname used by both the opponents seeking to derail his campaign and the supporters attempting to bolster it. MEET THE AUTHOR Hayley Igarashi is a student at UC Davis preparing to graduate this summer with a degree in both history and philosophy. She has been writing fictional short stories since she was a child, and a couple of her pieces have even been published in small online magazines. Only recently has she discovered how nice writing about real life can be, a realization that took surprisingly long considering her background in history. She likes to read and at the moment is most inspired by the writings of Kurt Vonnegut, Jonathan Safran Foer, Kazuo Ishiguro, and because everyone needs a guilty pleasure, George R. R. Martin. When not studying for school, she enjoys doing normal things like hanging out with friends and family and watching movies. Items on her bucket list include sky-diving, running a marathon, writing a full-length novel, and learning how to cook something that tastes good. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK "Hollande early career differs from other politicians in its rather flat trajectory. In fact, an analysis of the first half of his career would hardly lead anyone to assume that the same man would soon make a run for the presidency. Besides a rather privileged educational background, Hollande does not seem to differ too much from the average French citizen attempting to make his living and struggling to find his footing. Little did he know that someday that just might prove to be his charm." "Its an easy strategic move, therefore, for Hollande to claim he despises the rich and their ostentatious displays of wealth. Its a sentiment sure to find support. Unfortunately, the true test of sincerity for Hollande cannot come till after hes elected. He may say hes against the rich now, but I hear those yachts can be mighty tempting and theres nothing like being president of a country to make those illusions of your own grandeur go to your head. Book The 2012 French Election

Download or read book The 2012 French Election written by Pascal Perrineau and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-09 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume is based on a highly original survey carried out between November 2011 and June 2012 among a panel of 6,000 voters. The panel was interviewed on 12 separate occasions about how and why they made their voting choices. The book focuses on how electoral choices are made and how these choices evolve during the short time-span of an election campaign. The analysis of the 2012 electoral result shows more than ever that voting choices are the fruit of interweaving timelines: the long term period that characterizes voters’ predispositions and their predictions of a possible scenario; the shorter period of time during which the campaign unfolds where those predispositions are either confirmed, called into question, or undone; and the moment when the final choice is made. This is the first time the electoral decision-making process during a French Presidential election has been systematically studied.

Book The 2017 French Presidential Elections

Download or read book The 2017 French Presidential Elections written by Jocelyn Evans and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emmanuel Macron’s victory in the 2017 presidential elections represents one of the most important disruptions to French political life since the establishment of the Fifth Republic. This book analyses the political opportunities enabling a neophyte to conquer the Elysée, and the conditions leading to the unprecedented presidential runoff between this centrist EU enthusiast and pro-globalization candidate and the nationalistic/populist alternative embodied by Marine Le Pen. The book begins by considering trends in party competition and presidentialism in modern France, notably presidential primaries and their impact on party competition. It then moves to considering the role traditional explanatory factors in elections, namely policies and voter profiles, played in the result. Finally, it examines the dynamics of President Macron’s success in the legislatives, and how he dominated the traditional party blocs. This book will appeal to students of French politics as well as those interested in electoral behaviour and European political systems.

Book Emmanuel Macron and the two years that changed France

Download or read book Emmanuel Macron and the two years that changed France written by Alistair Cole and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-26 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at the period 2015–18 in French politics, a turbulent time that witnessed the apparent collapse of the old party system, the taming of populist and left-wing challenges to the Republic and the emergence of a new political order centred on President Emmanuel Macron. The election of Macron was greeted with relief in European chancelleries and appeared to give a new impetus to European integration, even accomplishing the feat of making France attractive after a long period of French bashing and reflexive decline. But what is the real significance of the Macron presidency? Is it as transformative as it appears? Emmanuel Macron and the two years that changed France provides a balanced answer to this pressing question. It is written to appeal to a general readership with an interest in French and European politics, as well as to students and scholars of French politics.

Book The Front National in France

Download or read book The Front National in France written by Daniel Stockemer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-02-28 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In light of the transformation of the Front National (FN) to a major player in French politics, this book examines how the unprecedented boost in positive opinions towards the FN as well as its increasing membership and electoral success have been possible. Using a supply and demand framework and a mixed methods approach, the author investigates the development of the FN and compares the “new” FN under Marine Le Pen with the “old” FN under Jean-Marie Le Pen across 4 dimensions: (1) the party’s ideology, (2) the leadership styles of the two leaders including the composition of the party elites and the leaders’/ parties’ relationship with the media, (3) the party members and (4) the party voters. It appeals to scholars interested in the study of radical right-wing movements and parties as well as to anybody interested in French politics.

Book Fran ois Hollande s Presidency

Download or read book Fran ois Hollande s Presidency written by Jean-Pierre Darnis and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: François Hollande's election as president of the French republic seems to mark a political rupture, interrupting 17 years of right wing presidencies (under Jacques Chirac and Nicolas Sarkozy) and a decade of conservative government. Hollande claims that he will be a "normal" president, in contrast with Sarkozy's flamboyant style. This paper assesses whether Hollande's presidency truly represents a turning point in France's trajectory by gauging its impact on French foreign policy. The argument elaborated below is that French foreign policy is and will continue to be driven by strong continuities, although differences in style are likely to impinge upon France's role in the world and in the EU.

Book The Rise of French Populism An Election in a Most Fractured Landscape

Download or read book The Rise of French Populism An Election in a Most Fractured Landscape written by King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies and published by King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies (KFCRIS). This book was released on 2017-06-01 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Populism is said to be the major new political trend. From Brexit to the election of Donald Trump in the United States, old ideas and conceptions of the Left and Right are being deconstructed before our eyes faced with populist mantras. The French presidential election of 2017 was a story of a pro-European, pro-business, globalist centrist candidate and underdog, Emmanuel Macron, defeating the favored right-wing candidate, decimating the Socialist left, and going on to win a super majority in the National Assembly, with a movement turned-party he only recently created. However, what is not told, are the populist elements and narratives, coopted by all candidates in the French presidential election, and how this aided Macron where it delegitimized most others. This paper analysis does just that, in exploring and analyzing populist narratives in all the major French presidential candidates’ campaigns, as well as the context and evolution of populist sentiment in contemporary France, in general, to better understand how we have arrived at this point, and perhaps to better understand the direction Macron will take France and Europe.

Book Will a Five minute Discussion Change Your Mind

Download or read book Will a Five minute Discussion Change Your Mind written by Vincent Pons and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Existing evidence on the impact of door-to-door canvassing comes from small-scale experiments that assign treatment at the individual level (at which voter choices are difficult to measure), and assume greater control over canvassers' selection and behavior than is typical to most campaigns. This paper takes a different approach by assigning entire precincts to either a control group or a treatment group, in a countrywide experiment during François Hollande's campaign in the 2012 French presidential elections. Overall, activists supporting the Parti Socialiste's candidate knocked on five million doors. Visits did not affect voter turnout, but increased Hollande's vote share in the first round at the expense of his right-wing opponents, and accounted for one fifth of his victory margin in the second round. This impact largely persisted in later elections, suggesting that even brief one-on-one discussions can have a large and lasting persuasion effect.

Book France After 2012

Download or read book France After 2012 written by Gabriel Goodliffe and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May 2012, French voters rejected the liberalizing policies of Nicolas Sarkozy and elected his opponent, the Socialist François Hollande, president. In June 2012, the incumbent president’s center-right UMP party was swept out of government in the ensuing parliamentary elections, giving way to a new center-left majority in the National Assembly. This book analyzes the contexts and results of the 2012 presidential and parliamentary elections in France. It assesses the legacies of the Sarkozy presidency that informed the 2012 electoral campaigns, scrutinizing his domestic social and economic policies on the one hand and European and foreign policies on the other. In turn, the elections’ outcomes are also analyzed from the standpoint of various political parties and other institutional interests in France, and the results are situated within the broader run of French political history. Finally, the book examines the principal challenges facing the Hollande administration and new government of Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault, and assesses how effectively these have been met during their first year in office.
