Book France in the Twentieth Century Classic Reprint

Download or read book France in the Twentieth Century Classic Reprint written by Walter Lionel George and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from France in the Twentieth Century In the first chapter of this book, the author states at length the difficulties with which the would-be writer on France is confronted. After perusing them, the reader will be inclined to think that neither the able nor the sincere can ever hope to fulfil these impossible conditions, and it is true that they are difficult of realisation. The author has developed his views sufficiently to make it unnecessary to state it here, but the salient fact that emerges is that neither the Frenchman nor the alien is, ideally fitted for a study of France, owing to his natural bias; the obvious inference is that the most favourable position is that of a hei-matloSy whose tendencies are half French and half British, who is born and educated under one flag and counter-influenced under the other. Thus he becomes a neutral and able to take up a sane position. As this is not an autobiography, the author will only state briefly the circumstances that induce him to believe that he is in a position to judge fairly; no credit is claimed for fortuitous advantages, but he may be allowed to avail himself of them all the same. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from France and Italy Napoleon III. Has been represented as a dreamer, irresolute, chimerical, at the mercy of events, and blindly obedient to the suggestions of his advisers. Nothing could be more unlike the truth. On the con trary, until disease had impaired his forces, the Em peror was pre-eminently a man of action, relying on no one but himself, and no political personage has possessed to a higher degree the quality of personal initiative. What other pretender has ever dreamed of such bold attempts as those of Strasburg and Boulogne? What coup d'e'tat was ever so rash as that of the Second of December? What war was ever more mysteriously prepared or more imprudently engaged in than that of 1859? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems From France Many would-be authors understand the feelings of Roosevelt when impatient to write more books, he was told by some critics that his works were interesting but not literary, for after a lecture-recital of many of the poems herein, one reported that the rhymes were human, spiritual and patriotic, but of no lit crary value. True, none have been printed in the big magazines. Timidity prevented their sending; some, however, have appeared in the Boston Transcript; but it is because they have seemed to find an acceptance in the minds and hearts of so many children and youth, and there has been such a sincere and insistent demand on the part of principals and teachers for a substantial book with notes and illustrations, that this modest volume has been published. On my return I found her sadly changed. She had suddenly aged. The joy and contentment were gone, and in their place were intense suffer ing and profound sorrow. The fiery ordeal through which she had passed had left its ugly scars but it had also tempered her and made her finer and stronger. Where she had lost materially she had gained Spiritually. She stands to-day erect and proud, confident and determined, her face illumined by the glory of a great faith that in the ultimate outcome of the tremendous struggle hers will be the victory.
