Download or read book Translation Peripheries written by Anna Gil Bardají and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates different elements which have direct implications for translations but are not the actual text. These features are usually presented in a particular format - written, oral, digital, audio-visual or musical. They are furnished with, for example, illustrations, prologues, introductions, indexes or appendices, or are accompanied by an ensemble of information outside the text such as an interview with the author, a general or specialist press review, an advertisement or a previous translation. However, the boundaries of paratextuality are not limited to the aforementioned examples, since paratextuality has a direct implication for areas as diverse as censorship, a contracting economy, decisions taken by the various actors in the political or cultural context in which the text occurs. Therefore it is obvious that most of the key concepts in Translation Studies cannot be fully understood without reference to the part played by paratextual elements, examined here taking into account different language pairs from Turkish to Catalan. The content presented in this book is gathered from a conference on Paratextual Elements in Translation, held at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona in 2010.

Book Literary Self Translation in Hispanophone Contexts La autotraducci n literaria en contextos de habla hispana

Download or read book Literary Self Translation in Hispanophone Contexts La autotraducci n literaria en contextos de habla hispana written by Lila Bujaldón de Esteves and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-12-17 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited book contributes to the growing field of self-translation studies by exploring the diversity of roles the practice has in Spanish-speaking contexts of production on both sides of the Atlantic. Part I surveys the presence of self-translation in contemporary Indigenous literatures in Spanish America, with a focus on Mexico and the Mapuche poetry of Chile and Argentina. Part II proposes to incorporate self-translation into the history of Spanish-American literatures- including its relation with colonial multilingual-translation practices, the transfers it allowed between the French and Spanish-American avant-gardes, and the insertion it offered for exiled Republicans in Mexico. Part III develops new reflections on the Iberian realm: on the choice between self and allograph translation Basque writers must face, a new category in Xosé Dasilva’s typology, based on the Galician context, and the need to expand the analysis of directionality in Catalan self-translations. This book brings together contributions from some of the leading international experts in translation and self-translation, and it will be of interest to scholars and students in the fields of Translation Studies, Cultural Studies, Comparative Literature, Spanish Literature, Spanish American and Latin American Literature, and Amerindian Literatures.

Book Self Translation and Power

Download or read book Self Translation and Power written by Olga Castro and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-07 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the political, social, cultural and economic implications of self-translation in multilingual spaces in Europe. Engaging with the ‘power turn’ in translation studies contexts, it offers innovative perspectives on the role of self-translators as cultural and ideological mediators. The authors explore the unequal power relations and centre-periphery dichotomies of Europe’s minorised languages, literatures and cultures. They recognise that the self-translator’s double affiliation as author and translator places them in a privileged position to challenge power, to negotiate the experiences of the subaltern and colonised, and to scrutinise conflicting minorised vs. hegemonic cultural identities. Three main themes are explored in relation to self-translation: hegemony and resistance; self-minorisation and self-censorship; and collaboration, hybridisation and invisibility. This edited collection will appeal to scholars and students working on translation, transnational and postcolonial studies, and multilingual and multicultural identities.

Book Translating the Postcolonial in Multilingual Contexts

Download or read book Translating the Postcolonial in Multilingual Contexts written by Collectif and published by Presses universitaires de la Méditerranée. This book was released on 2021-07-02 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays aims to contribute to scholarship already published in Translation Studies and Postcolonial Studies, endeavouring to question the traditional divide between these two academic strands and to bring them closer together in creative ways, across several geographical regions, linguistic contexts and historical circumstances. Moving away from a binary and dichotomous approach, the authors address these questions that link linguistic heterogeneity, postcolonial resistance and border identities. How does translation as a process operate across different linguistic and cultural spaces? How do translated selves negotiate meaning simultaneously across multiple linguistic borders? For the sake of cohesion, the geopolitical zones of translational contact have been limited to two colonial/European languages, namely French and English. The regional languages involved cover postcolonial, cultural spaces where Mauritian, Haitian, Reunionese and Louisianian Creole, Gikuyu, Wolof, Swahili and Arabic are spoken.

Book Appropriating Kartini

Download or read book Appropriating Kartini written by Paul Bijl and published by ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute. This book was released on 2020-01-10 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This collection of essays demonstrates vividly how and why the life and writings of Kartini spark different meanings to different people across different continents and times for a wide range of reasons. Truly engaging and enlightening."—Professor Dr Ariel Heryanto, Herb Feith Professor for the Study of Indonesia at Monash University, and author of Identity and Pleasure: The Politics of Indonesian Screen Culture "An icon of colonial Indonesia and a postcolonial intellectual avant la lettre, Kartini straddles the subtle terrain between feminism, politics and memory. This beautifully crafted volume goes beyond the analysis of Kartini’s contested legacy as a national figure. It instead engages in an original way with Kartini as a highly remediated transnational celebrity, who has become a 'floating signifier'. This volume’s timely contribution is to reposition Kartini’s life, legacy and afterlife within the intersectional dynamics of gender, race, class, religion and sexuality that so shaped the origin, interpretation and impact of the 'Javanese princess' across time and space."—Professor Dr Sandra Ponzanesi, Professor of Gender and Postcolonial Studies, Utrecht University, The Netherlands, and author of The Postcolonial Cultural Industry: Icons, Markets, Mythologies "This rich collection of essays on the appropriation of Indonesian national heroine and international feminist icon Kartini provides an incisive insight into the multiple ways her brilliant letters have been read, interpreted and used. Progressive colonial administrators, anti-colonial nationalists, socialist feminists and conservative feminists during the military dictatorship of President Suharto alike appropriated her life and work to further their own divergent causes. I hope this anthology stimulates the (re) reading of the inspiring and still highly relevant words of this gifted, complex, rebellious Javanese woman, who died in childbirth at such a young age."—Professor Dr Saskia E. Wieringa, Professor of Gender and Women’s Same-sex Relations Cross-culturally, University of Amsterdam, author of Sexual Politics in Indonesia, and co-founder of the Kartini Asia Network
