Book Framing Friction

Download or read book Framing Friction written by Mary S. Mander and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a culture where the media provide a steady diet of stories of conflict, this collection is among the first to study the phenomenon of conflict itself as well as its relationship with the media. Mary S. Mander's introduction provides an intellectually rich foundation for this diverse exploration of the nature and implications of studying media and social conflict. Contributors address such topics as the black press and the black community, industrial and institutional control of television programming, and media depictions of police-mediated hostage negotiation. Framing Friction is both a comparison of current modes of communications research and a persuasive call to move beyond conceiving of conflict as a state of dysfunction. These essays bring a new and invigorating perspective to the role of conflict, describing it as a constructive rather than a destructive social force.

Book The Friction of the Frame

Download or read book The Friction of the Frame written by Simone Heller-Andrist and published by Narr Francke Attempto Verlag. This book was released on 2012-03-07 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her study, Simone Heller-Andrist applies the Kantian and Derridean parergon to English literature. The parergon is a specific type of frame that interacts with the work it surrounds in a fashion likely to influence or even manipulate our reading of the work. On the basis of this interaction, Derrida's parergon becomes a valid methodological tool that allows a close analysis of the mechanisms involved in the reading process. The manipulative force of a textual construct is apparent through the occurrence of friction, namely incongruities or gaps we notice during the reading process. Friction is thus, on the one hand, the main indicator of parergonality and, on the other, the prime signal for a potential conditioning of the reader. As readers, we not only have to analyze the interaction between work and parergon but must also constantly reflect upon our own position with regard to the text that we read. By means of the concept of the parergon, we can approach not only paratextual, narrative or discursive frames but also intertextual relationships. Since the application of the concept is based on a basic textual constellation and an internal mechanism, its range is wide and transcends - or complements - previously established textual categories.

Book excerpt: “Cukier and his co-authors have a more ambitious project than Kahneman and Harari. They don’t want to just point out how powerfully we are influenced by our perspectives and prejudices—our frames. They want to show us that these frames are tools, and that we can optimise their use.” —Forbes From pandemics to populism, AI to ISIS, wealth inequity to climate change, humanity faces unprecedented challenges that threaten our very existence. The essential tool that will enable humanity to find the best way foward is defined in Framers by internationally renowned authors Kenneth Cukier, Viktor Mayer-Schönberger, and Francis de Véricourt. To frame is to make a mental model that enables us to make sense of new situations. Frames guide the decisions we make and the results we attain. People have long focused on traits like memory and reasoning, leaving framing all but ignored. But with computers becoming better at some of those cognitive tasks, framing stands out as a critical function—and only humans can do it. This book is the first guide to mastering this human ability. Illustrating their case with compelling examples and the latest research, authors Cukier, Mayer-Schönberger, and de Véricourt examine: · Why advice to “think outside the box” is useless · How Spotify beat Apple by reframing music as an experience · How the #MeToo twitter hashtag reframed the perception of sexual assault · The disaster of framing Covid-19 as equivalent to seasonal flu, and how framing it akin to SARS delivered New Zealand from the pandemic Framers shows how framing is not just a way to improve how we make decisions in the era of algorithms—but why it will be a matter of survival for humanity in a time of societal upheaval and machine prosperity.

Book Tatsuo Suzuki Friction Tokyo Streets

Download or read book Tatsuo Suzuki Friction Tokyo Streets written by and published by Steidl. This book was released on 2019-02 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book embodies Japanese street photography now. Composed of black-and-white photos taken throughout Tokyo's bustling wards, Friction / Tokyo Streets reveals unexpected meaning and beauty in the mundane, be it in an image of a girl navigating a zebra crossing, cropped legs standing on a subway platform, shifting reflections in a store window, or a pigeon caught mid-flight. Suzuki captures the spontaneous gestures, glimpses and abstractions that comprise the best street photography. Yet as the book's title reveals, it is the con - flicting and contradictory energies of the street that lie at the core of his project: "Through my own eyes ... I would like to express the tension, the edged frustration, the taut atmosphere and the feelings that beat, inherent in the city." 'No one moment is most important. Any moment can be something.' -Garry Winogrand
