Download or read book Fragments From German Prose Writers Classic Reprint written by Sarah Austin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fragments From German Prose Writers Surrounded by the nations which have the chief and foremost influence on the condition and desti nies of mankind, lies our Fatherland strong against all, formidable to most, in six hundred thousand warriors, who have seldom been equalled, and never excelled. For whomsoever, or for whatsoever cause, they take up arms, whoever be their leader, with them rests the balance of political power, the liberties of Europe, the welfare of the human race. By Germans was the last universal monarchy over thrown; from among them proceeded the rulers of the states which arose out of its ruins, in one of whom, chosen by themselves, Europe recognized the title and rank of Caesar; while the abuse of his power was mainly checked by the spirit of German freedom. Book Ausgew hlte Prosa

Download or read book Ausgew hlte Prosa written by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-10 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ausgewahlte Prosa: Edited, With Notes In the first place, every teacher of German has suffered to a greater or less extent from the want of good reading books of prose. Nearly all the longer pieces read in our colleges and schools are taken from the poetical literature of the language, and especially from the drama. It would be super uous to dwell upon the grave inconveniences arising from such one-sidedness. The difference between poetry and prose is marked in any language, and more so than in German. When the student passes from easy lyrics and dramas to the grave and subtle style of history or criticism, he finds himself in a new world, as it were. He is confronted with tangled constructions. Book Anglo German Interactions in the Literature of the 1890s

Download or read book Anglo German Interactions in the Literature of the 1890s written by Patrick Bridgwater and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is a study of what the main ""aesthetic"" writers of late 19th-century Britain made of German literature, and of how Germany in turn reacted to them. The impact of Anglo-Scottish art nouveau in fin-de-siecle Austria and Germany made it predictable that Keats, Pater and Rossetti, among others, would be well received, but no one could have known in advance that by the time of their deaths, Swinburne and Wilde would be more highly regarded in Germany than in Britain. Bridgwater's documented study casts light on the central cultural issues of the day, including ideas of morality, truth and subjectivism in art, comparing Pater and Wilde with Nietzsche, and George Moore, that chameleon of the decadent 90s, with Schopenhauer."

This book was released on 2020-02-11 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The extensive scope of this collection means that this documentary record of the reception of German literature in England is a valuable scholarly resource. One of the most important features of British literary and intellectual history over the past 250 years is the influence of German literature. From the second half of the 18th Century, through the first decades of the 19th, German books and ideas attracted, then gained the attention of a nation. Despite the acknowledged importance of the influence on writers such as Coleridge and Carlyle the subject, though often alluded to, was rarely studied. This collection provides a guidebook through the masses of periodical and allows the English side of the Anglo-German literary relationship to be explored in detail. In order to make the collection useful to scholars with a wide range of interest, it has been divided into three parts: Part 1 is a chronological presentation of commentary on German literature in general. It also contains collective reviews of multiple German authors, notices of important anthologies and reactions to influential works about Germany and its culture. Part 2 collects reviews of 18th Century individual German authors and Part 3 is devoted to the English reception of Goethe and Schiller. Parts 2 & 3 contain cross-references to the collective reviews of Part 1. Containing over 200 British serials and articles and reviews from all the major English literary periodicals, the collection also includes a broad sampling of opinion from the more general magazines, including some popular religious publications.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Select Minor Poems: Translated From the German of Goethe and Schiller; With Notes Poet's life is in his works; especially in such lighter lyric pieces. They are the most genuine things the poet does into them goes most of the character and nature of the man; in them you have him under all his moods and aspects; and if they win you to their mood, and haunt you long, you feel that you know him. Could Goethe and Schiller be brought near us in some such living way, it would give a new impulse to our literature, and inspire worthier aims and methods of culture, than prevail. The student of these writers looks up to them as benefactors to his whole nature. From Schiller he learns lofty aspirations, and from Goethe how to realize them. The one speaks to him amid the hackneyed forms of life of a better ideal world, and warns him, inspires him, to trust all inward inti mations of the True, the Beautiful, the Perfect, how ever contradicted by the Actual. The other shows him the riper practical wisdom, which makes much of. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
