Book Figments Fragments and Pigments Oh My

Download or read book Figments Fragments and Pigments Oh My written by Carl Grupp and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2014-09-18 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gracing many collections, including that of the Art Institute of Chicago, the paintings, drawings, and etchings of Carl Grupp, art professor emeritus, Augustana College, have received high acclaim; but appreciating them is one thing, understanding them is another. In “figments, fragments, & pigments, oh my”, Carl tells stories about his life. Sometimes rather twisted stories. You'll laugh. You may be offended. But you'll also be able to crawl a little more deeply into his art. Over 50 plates of his artwork are presented and the triptych “Diogenes' Dream” is explained in detail. The stories are fascinating. The artwork is fascinating. The book, itself, is . . . doubly fascinating.

Book Holocaust Representations in History

Download or read book Holocaust Representations in History written by Daniel H. Magilow and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-11-28 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the Holocaust is depicted and memorialized is key to our understanding of the atrocity and its impact. Through 18 case studies dating from the immediate aftermath of the genocide to the present day, Holocaust Representations in History explores this in detail. Daniel H. Magilow and Lisa Silverman examine film, drama, literature, photography, visual art, television, graphic novels, memorials, and video games as they discuss the major themes and issues that underpin the chronicling of the Holocaust. Each chapter is focused on a critical debate or question in Holocaust history; the case studies range from well-known, commercially successful works about the Holocaust to controversial examples which have drawn accusations of profaning the memory of the genocide. This 2nd edition adds to the mosaic of representation, with new chapters analysing poetry in the wake of the Holocaust and video games from the here and now. This unique volume provides an unmatched survey of key and controversial Holocaust representations and is of vital importance to anyone wanting to understand the subject and its complexities.

Book New Leadership into the 21St Century

Download or read book New Leadership into the 21St Century written by Yahya ibn Shabazz and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2003-09-17 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imam W. Deen Mohammed said in a public address; words make people. I believe that a word can be anything that leaves an impression on the minds of human society, be it spoken, acted out, or whatever form it may take, all creation is to be seen as a word. According to scripture, all creation is here as a result of a word spoken by G-d, so again we say, words make people. If we can go deeper and look at the mind of the human being, and look at what kinds of words that are going into the mental makeup of a person, we then can get a better picture of what forms the character of that person. We must understand that our physical construction only acts as a vehicle that transports the mind, which is the real person. So just to view the physical makeup of a person is not really seeing that person at all. It is the ideas, the activities, the words, etc: that comes from that persons mind that helps us to see the real person. So now we can see the importance of understanding a word like leader. Leader; a person that leads, or has commanding influence or authority over others. The director, conductor, or guide. Ship; the state, condition, or quality of something. Art skill of office. So now we see that not only do we still need leaders, but also we must have leaders that have the best interest of the people at heart. Leaders with the vision, the wisdom, knowledge, and the integrity to know when to stay, or change courses so that not only will they be able to get the people to the next level, but will also give the people the knowledge so that they may guide themselves through the rough waters of society. When we talk about leadership, we should understand that for the subject to even come up, there has to be something lacking in the minds of the people in term of where we as a people, or as a society want to go, and how we are going to reach the goals we have set for ourselves. In todays society we hear some foolish people make the statement, I dont need a leader. Or I follow my self, I make my own decisions. We must understand that theres not a thought, or an idea that we can think of that is our very own We are influenced by the environment that we live in. We should also realize that this society is not hap hazard, but rather, very orchestrated. Therefore many decisions that we make become life determining. In todays society we are lead to think that all accomplishments have to be material. With this kind of thinking, we can easily see how a person can become so limited in terms of growth, and development, and a non- - contributor to the positive development of human society as a whole. Many are influenced by the all pervasiveness of the media, which contrary to what those in media would have us believe, media is not art mimicking life, but rather it helps to set the trends of life. We see many people with lots of money, especially those in the field of entertainment, with little or no vision, reach their peak in the early stages of their development, and then suddenly crash as a result of the trials of life. Still others who desire to have these material accomplishments, although never rise to that level, still they see it as their lifes goal, and in their quest for it, they use illegal methods, which eventually leaves them dead in the streets, or locked up behind bars for a good deal of their young lives. Then there are those who continue to struggle to make ends meet, and those who do manage to make it up the higher end of the economic ladder. Too many of these tend to lose their identity because they have been lead to believe that the goal for the African American community is voting rights, or integration, and once these goals are achieved, then the struggle is over. As a consequence of this kind of thinking, as African Americans, we still see ourselves at the bottom of American society. Not only here in America, but around the world as well. It is unfortunate

Book Women Writing Fancy

Download or read book Women Writing Fancy written by Maura Smyth and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-07-11 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings to the foreground the largely forgotten “Fancy” of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and follows its traces as they extend into the nineteenth and twentieth. Trivialized for its flightiness and femininity, Fancy nonetheless provided seventeenth- and eighteenth-century women writers such as Margaret Cavendish, Aphra Behn, Delarivier Manley, Eliza Haywood, and Anna Barbauld a mode of vision that could detect flaws in the Enlightenment’s patriarchal systems and glimpse new, female-authored worlds and genres. In carving out unreal, fanciful spaces within the larger frame of patriarchal culture, these women writers planted Fancy—and, with it, female authorial invention—at the cornerstone of Enlightenment empirical endeavor. By finally taking Fancy seriously, this book offers an alternate genealogy of female authorship and a new framework for understanding modernity’s triumph.

Book Fragments and Figments

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Thomas Rickert
  • Publisher : AuthorHouse
  • Release : 2003-07-08
  • ISBN : 1410708306
  • Pages : 109 pages

Download or read book Fragments and Figments written by John Thomas Rickert and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2003-07-08 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alfred Lord Tennyson in his poem, "Ulysses" has the aging hero say, "I am a part of all that I have met". To this the poet might have added: and of all that I have thought. Storytellers find their stories among the broken fragments of their lives, things they have done, seen, or heard. They also find them among the scattered figments of their minds, things that they have deduced, dreamed or imagined. Their tales are crafted of these fragments and figments, with the mix varying widely. In the following stories that mix favors fact over fancy. Three of the stories are taken from my experiences during the Korean War; two are drawn from my childhood; and one from the courtship of my grandparents.

Book Popular Trauma Culture

Download or read book Popular Trauma Culture written by Anne Rothe and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-15 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Popular Trauma Culture, Anne Rothe argues that American Holocaust discourse has a particular plot structure—characterized by a melodramatic conflict between good and evil and embodied in the core characters of victim/survivor and perpetrator—and that it provides the paradigm for representing personal experiences of pain and suffering in the mass media. The book begins with an analysis of Holocaust clichés, including its political appropriation, the notion of vicarious victimhood, the so-called victim talk rhetoric, and the infusion of the composite survivor figure with Social Darwinism. Readers then explore the embodiment of popular trauma culture in two core mass media genres: daytime TV talk shows and misery memoirs. Rothe conveys how victimhood and suffering are cast as trauma kitsch on talk shows like Oprah and as trauma camp on modern-day freak shows like Springer. The discussion also encompasses the first scholarly analysis of misery memoirs, the popular literary genre that has been widely critiqued in journalism as pornographic depictions of extreme violence. Currently considered the largest growth sector in book publishing worldwide, many of these works are also fabricated. And since forgeries reflect the cultural entities that are most revered, the book concludes with an examination of fake misery memoirs.
