Book excerpt: This volume is based on lectures delivered at the 2022 AMS Short Course “3D Printing: Challenges and Applications” held virtually from January 3–4, 2022. Access to 3D printing facilities is quickly becoming ubiquitous across college campuses. However, while equipment training is readily available, the process of taking a mathematical idea and making it into a printable model presents a big hurdle for most mathematicians. Additionally, there are still many open questions around what objects are possible to print, how to design algorithms for doing so, and what kinds of geometries have desired kinematic properties. This volume is focused on the process and applications of 3D printing for mathematical education, research, and visualization, alongside a discussion of the challenges and open mathematical problems that arise in the design and algorithmic aspects of 3D printing. The articles in this volume are focused on two main topics. The first is to make a bridge between mathematical ideas and 3D visualization. The second is to describe methods and techniques for including 3D printing in mathematical education at different levels— from pedagogy to research and from demonstrations to individual projects. We hope to establish the groundwork for engaged academic discourse on the intersections between mathematics, 3D printing and education.

With the help of Latin-American émigré teachers, he became a formidable pianist and composer, spending twelve years in France and Germany establishing his career. Upon his return to the United States in 1888 he conquered American audiences with his dramatic Second Piano Concerto and won his way into their hearts with his poetic Woodland Sketches. Columbia University tapped him as their first professor of music in 1896, but a scandalous row with powerful university president Nicholas Murray Butler spelled the end of his career. MacDowell died a broken man four years later, but his widow Marian kept his spirit alive through the MacDowell Colony, which she founded in 1907 in their New Hampshire home, and which is today the oldest and one of the most influential, thriving artist colonies in the the United States. Drawing on private letters that were sealed for fifty years after his death, this biography traces MacDowell's compelling life story, with new revelations about his Quaker childhood, his efforts to succeed in the insular German music world, his mysterious death, and his lifelong struggle with Seasonal Affective Disorder. Edward MacDowell's story is a timeless tale of human strength and weakness set in one of the most vibrant periods of American musical history, when optimism about the country's artistic future made anything seem possible.

The papers by Mackie, Essler and Trapp, Fetzer (in Section 11), Levi, and Tuomela appear here for the first time, and are simultaneously published in Synthese 34, No. 4, which is a special issue on dispositions. Of the previously published material it should be emphasized that the papers by Hempel and Fisk have been extensively revised specially for this anthology. The papers are grouped in four sections, partlyon the basis of their content. However, due to the complexity of the issues involved, there is considerable overlap in content between the different sections, especially between Sections land 11. Bush argues that a dialectical approach to conflicts between ethics and aesthetics can point to a broader, axiological vision––informed by a Trinitarian conception of reality––in which the whole, a coherent theory of value, is more than the sum of its parts.
