Book Conceptual Models of Flow and Transport in the Fractured Vadose Zone

Download or read book Conceptual Models of Flow and Transport in the Fractured Vadose Zone written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-06-21 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluid flow and solute transport within the vadose zone, the unsaturated zone between the land surface and the water table, can be the cause of expanded plumes arising from localized contaminant sources. An understanding of vadose zone processes is, therefore, an essential prerequisite for cost-effective contaminant remediation efforts. In addition, because such features are potential avenues for rapid transport of chemicals from contamination sources to the water table, the presence of fractures and other channel-like openings in the vadose zone poses a particularly significant problem, Conceptual Models of Flow and Transport in the Fractured Vadose Zone is based on the work of a panel established under the auspices of the U.S. National Committee for Rock Mechanics. It emphasizes the importance of conceptual models and goes on to review the conceptual model development, testing, and refinement processes. The book examines fluid flow and transport mechanisms, noting the difficulty of modeling solute transport, and identifies geochemical and environmental tracer data as important components of the modeling process. Finally, the book recommends several areas for continued research.

Book Rock Fractures And Fluid Flow

Download or read book Rock Fractures And Fluid Flow written by Giovanni Ake and published by . This book was released on 2021-03-15 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fractures are mechanical breaks in rocks; they originate from strains that arise from stress concentrations around flaws, heterogeneities, and physical discontinuities. They form in response to lithostatic, tectonic, and thermal stresses and high fluid pressures. They occur at a variety of scales, from microscopic to continental. Fractures are important in engineering, geotechnical, and hydrogeological practice because they provide pathways for fluid flow. Many economically significant petroleum, geothermal, and water supply reservoirs form fractured rocks. Fracture systems control the dispersion of chemical contaminants into and through the subsurface. They also affect the stability of engineered structures and excavations. A Review of hydraulic structure and rock formation fluid flow systems

For the first time in her life, Suzume has begun to open her heart. With Kaito and her friends at her side, she knows they’ll conquer the darkness together. All that is left is to find the last soul fragment. What she hadn’t planned for was finding Kazue’s reincarnation… The return of Kaito’s former lover puts a wedge between Suzume and Kaito, as they both face danger that threatens to pull them apart for good. While Suzume’s family is in Hisato’s clutches at the palace, Kaito’s enemies are trying to take away his newly reformed kingdom. With Hisato’s grip tightening on Akatsuki and his influence reaching farther, time is running short. If they have any hope to defeat him, it will be during the lunar eclipse in a month’s time. As anarchy consumes Akatsuki, their last hope lies in the flames burning in Suzume’s heart. To seal Hisato away, Suzume and the other soul fragments must be able to resonate together. But Suzume’s distrust of Kazue is getting in the way. Can they learn to work together in time before the world is devoured by night, or will Hisato triumph? If you loved the fierce heroine from THRONE OF GLASS and the action and slow-burn enemies-to-lovers romance of INUYASHA, you'll love Nicolette Andrews's THE FRACTURED SOUL. Book Advances in the Study of Fractured Reservoirs

Download or read book Advances in the Study of Fractured Reservoirs written by G.H. Spence and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2014-08-27 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Naturally fractured reservoirs constitute a substantial percentage of remaining hydrocarbon resources; they create exploration targets in otherwise impermeable rocks, including under-explored crystalline basement; and they can be used as geological stores for anthropogenic carbon dioxide. Their complex behaviour during production has traditionally proved difficult to predict, causing a large degree of uncertainty in reservoir development. The applied study of naturally fractured reservoirs seeks to constrain this uncertainty by developing new understanding, and is necessarily a broad, integrated, interdisciplinary topic. This book addresses some of the challenges and advances in knowledge, approaches, concepts, and methods used to characterize the interplay of rock matrix and fracture networks, relevant to fluid flow and hydrocarbon recovery. Topics include: describing, characterizing and identifying controls on fracture networks from outcrops, cores, geophysical data, digital and numerical models; geomechanical influences on reservoir behaviour; numerical modelling and simulation of fluid flow; and case studies of the exploration and development of carbonate, siliciclastic and metamorphic naturally fractured reservoirs.

Book Storm triggered Landslides in Warmer Climates

Download or read book Storm triggered Landslides in Warmer Climates written by Diandong Ren and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-09-29 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume discusses the general physics of debris flows and various approaches to modeling - including the SEGMENT-Landslide approach – as well as the pros and cons of these approaches and how other approaches are sub-sets of the SEGMENT-Landslide approach. In addition, this volume will systematically unify the concepts of vadose zone hydrology and geotechnical engineering, with special emphasis on quantifying ecosystem consequences of storm-triggered landslides in a warmer climate setting. The reader will find a comprehensive coverage of concepts ranging from hillslope hydrology, porous granular material rheology and the fundamentals of soil properties, to state-of-the-art concepts of enhanced hydrological cycle with climate warming and a discussion of new approaches for future research.

Book Fracture and Fracture Mechanics

Download or read book Fracture and Fracture Mechanics written by R. B. Tait and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fracture and Fracture Mechanics: Case Studies contains the proceedings of the Second National Conference on Fracture, held at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa on November 26-27, 1984. This book presents case studies in fracture and fracture mechanics and highlights the problems associated with fracture, failure analysis, and safe design in industries as diverse as mining, power generation, transport, petrochemical, and manufacturing. This book has 29 chapters divided into five sections and opens with a discussion on the role of professional complacency in bridge failures. The first section is devoted to failure investigation and covers topics ranging from failure analysis of a hydraulic retarder piston to the use of scanning electron microscopy in investigating tungsten carbide-cobalt fractured components. The second section deals with slow crack growth and considers an approach to assessing structural integrity and fatigue failures in vibrating equipment. Failures arising from repair welding and incomplete heat treatment are described. The remaining chapters explore fitness for purpose evaluation of fractures; the environmental effects of fractures; and case studies of failure prevention in industries such as petrochemical, power generation, and transportation. This monograph will be of interest to structural engineers, metallurgists, and materials scientists and technologists.
