Book On Being Adjacent to Historical Violence

Download or read book On Being Adjacent to Historical Violence written by Irene Kacandes and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-12-06 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers to academic and general public readers timely reflections about our relationships to violence. Taking cues from the self-reflexivity, themes, and subject matters of Holocaust, queer, and Black studies, this large group of diverse intellectuals wrestles with questions that connect past, present and future: where do I stand in relation to violence? What is my attitude toward that adjacency? Whose story gets to be told by whom? What story do I take this image to be telling? How do I co-witness to another’s suffering? How do I honor the agency and resilience of family members or historical personages? How do past violence and injustice connect to the present? In smart, self-conscious, passionate, and often painfully beautiful prose, cultural practitioners, historians and cultural studies scholars such as Angelika Bammer, Doris Bergen, Ann Cvetkovich, Marianne Hirsch, Priscilla Layne, Mark Roseman, Leo Spitzer, Susan R. Suleiman and Viktor Witkowski explore such questions, inviting readers to do the same. By making available compelling examples of thinkers performing their own work within the cauldron of crises that came to a boil in 2020 and continued into the next year, this volume proposes strategies for moving forward with hope.

A book that feels literally larger than life, it is a feast for food lovers and Francophiles, combining the completist virtues of an encyclopedia and the obsessive visual pleasures of infographics with an enthusiast’s unbridled joy. Here are classic recipes, including how to make a pot-au-feu, eight essential composed salads, pâté en croûte, blanquette de veau, choucroute, and the best ratatouille. Profiles of French food icons like Colette and Curnonsky, Brillat-Savarin and Bocuse, the Troigros dynasty and Victor Hugo. Adding to the overall delight of the book is the random arrangement of its content (a tutorial on mayonnaise is next to a list of places where Balzac ate), making each page a found treasure. It’s a book you’ll open anywhere—and never want to close.

Book Russia and the Western Far Right

Download or read book Russia and the Western Far Right written by Anton Shekhovtsov and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing influence of Russia on the Western far right has been much discussed in the media recently. This book is the first detailed inquiry into what has been a neglected but critically important trend: the growing links between Russian actors and Western far right activists, publicists, ideologues, and politicians. The author uses a range of sources including interviews, video footage, leaked communications, official statements and press coverage in order to discuss both historical and contemporary Russia in terms of its relationship with the Western far right. Initial contacts between Russian political actors and Western far right activists were established in the early 1990s, but these contacts were low profile. As Moscow has become more anti-Western, these contacts have become more intense and have operated at a higher level. The book shows that the Russian establishment was first interested in using the Western far right to legitimise Moscow’s politics and actions both domestically and internationally, but more recently Moscow has begun to support particular far right political forces to gain leverage on European politics and undermine the liberal-democratic consensus in the West. Contributing to ongoing scholarly debates about Russia’s role in the world, its strategies aimed at securing legitimation of Putin’s regime both internationally and domestically, modern information warfare and propaganda, far right politics and activism in the West, this book draws on theories and methods from history, political science, area studies, and media studies and will be of interest to students, scholars, activists and practitioners in these areas.

Book History of The French Revolution From 1789 To 1814

Download or read book History of The French Revolution From 1789 To 1814 written by Fran?ois-Auguste Mignet and published by Prabhat Prakashan. This book was released on 2023-10-01 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the great incidents of History; none has attracted more attention or proved more difficult of interpretation than the French Revolution. The ultimate significance of other striking events and their place in the development of mankind can be readily estimated. It is clear enough that the barbarian invasions marked the death of the classical world; already mortally wounded by the rise of Christianity. It is clear enough that the Renaissance emancipated the human intellect from the trammels of a bastard mediaevalism; that the Reformation consolidated the victory of the "new learning" by including theology among the subjects of human debate. But the French Revolution seems to defy complete analysis. Its complexity was great; its contradictions numerous and astounding. A movement ostensibly directed against despotism culminated in the establishment of a despotism far more complete than that which had been overthrown. The apostles of liberty proscribed whole classes of their fellow-citizens; drenching in innocent blood the land which they claimed to deliver from oppression. The apostles of equality established a tyranny of horror; labouring to extirpate all who had committed the sin of being fortunate. The apostles of fraternity carried fire and sword to the farthest confines of Europe; demanding that a continent should submit to the arbitrary dictation of a single people. And of the Revolution were born the most rigid of modern codes of law; that spirit of militarism which to-day has caused a world to mourn; that intolerance of intolerance which has armed anti-clerical persecutions in all lands. Nor were the actors in the drama less varied than the scenes enacted. The Revolution produced Mirabeau and Talleyrand; Robespierre and Napoleon; Sieyès and Hébert. The marshals of the First Empire; the doctrinaires of the Restoration; the journalists of the Orleanist monarchy; all were alike the children of this generation of storm and stress; of high idealism and gross brutality; of changing fortunes and glory mingled with disaster. History of the French Revolution from 1789 to 1814 by M. Mignet: This classic history book provides readers with a detailed and insightful account of the French Revolution, from its origins in 1789 to its aftermath in 1814. Book Resilience and the Re integration of Street Children and Youth in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Resilience and the Re integration of Street Children and Youth in Sub Saharan Africa written by Walters Mudoh Sanji and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-29 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contributes to a better understanding of street children and youth within Sub-Saharan Africa. It investigates the psychological conditions of these children and determines how to reintegrate them into mainstream socio-economic activities. The book proposes cures and preventive measures. It also highlights the inextricable link which exists between street children and youth problem, and economic underdevelopment within Sub-Saharan Africa. With a careful examination of the main reasons of poverty and weak institutions within the region, the book offers suggestions on how to prevent street children and youth problem by alleviating poverty through a vibrant industrial sector and economic development. This book also provides recommendations on how to cure the problem by creating social enterprises which can offer opportunities to the youth and their parents. It achieves this by first comparing children and youth on the street (those who have homes to return to at night), with children and youth of the street (those who both work and live on the street). It then looks at a project designed to boost the resilience of street children. By looking at the differences between children on the street and children of the street, the book highlights the importance of having a home, and of the great value of cooperation between churches, non-government organizations and the state, in working to make the lives of these young people better. This book is a useful resource for students, academics and researchers in the fields of psychology, social work, sociology, and international development.
