Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fourth Annual Report of the Bureau of Statistics of Labor of the State of New York, for the Year 1886 The year 1886 has witnessed a more profound and far more extended agitation among the members of organized labor than any previous year in the history of our country, and while such agita tion in our own State has not been characterized by the wholly nnwarran ted and criminal excesses that startled with horror the popu lace of several of the Western cities, it has nevertheless been no less earnest and pronounced. With but rare exceptions organized labor has continued in this State, with greater success and vigor than ever before, to agitate, to strike and to boycott during the past year without a call to arms or a resort to dynamite and bloodshed. 'the year 1886 will be forever remembered as one of the greatest importance in the battle waged between capital and labor. The signal failures and successes of which, let us trust, will not be lost, or fail to serve as lessons of value to the student of social and economic questions. Download or read book First Annual Report of the Bureau of Labor Statistics written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Annual Report of the Bureau of Labor Statistics: For the Year Ending January 1, 1880 This report for 1879 will contain three parts: 1. An account of the origin and work of the Bureau. 2. Agriculture, its inducements to the unemployed. 3. Wages, earnings and employment of skilled and unskilled labor. And these three parts will form a prelude to next year's report. It is not to be expected that, in the less than five months' existence of the bureau, a very extended, complete, and satisfactory array of facts and evidence could be gathered; and still more would it be im possible when all the perplexities and embarrassments of the work are considered. Next year's investigations and labors, however, will cover almost every ground of practical interest to the industrial welfare of the State. And even now we are in the possession of material, which, when compiled with other corroborative data, will make the Second Annual Report one of value and general interest. This book was released on 2017-12-16 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fourth Annual Report of the Commissioner of Labor, 1888: Working Women in Large Cities Sir: I have the honor to submit herewith my fourth annual report. This report properly belongs with the series emanating from the Bureau of Labor. By law the Bureau of Labor ceased to exist, practically, on the 30th of J une last, the Department of Labor having been created by an act approved J uue 13, 1888. The investigation on which this report is based was made by the Bureau of Labor. As a part, there fore, of the work of the Department of the Interior, and as material constitutin g a part of your annual report for the fiscal year ending J uue 30, 1888, it seems proper that I should transmit this report to you, and in doing so I desire to thank you for your courtesy at all times in aid. Ing me to forward the work of the Bureau of Labor. Your kindness and that of your predecessors has been of great assistance in perform ing the duties assigned to the Bureau of Labor. All future reports, of course, will come from the Department of Labor, and by law will be transmitted to Congress. While the material for this report was col lected prior to the close of the last fiscal year, much other work was done by the Bureau which must naturally be carried forward into the reports of the present and the comin g fiscal years. I can not, therefore, strictly say that the present report constitutes the operations of the Bureau of Labor for the fiscal year ending J uue 30, 1888. The special work called for by Congress relating to the statistics of marriage and divorce does not form a part of the annual report, but by law is to be presented to Congress as a special matter. This work relatin g to mar riage and divorce has been carried through, so far as the fieldwork was concerned, by the Bureau of Labor, under your administration, and your liberal construction of law and hearty cooperation have enabled me to make an exhaustive report relating to one of the most vital questions connected with the social affairs of the country.
