Book Adaptive Thermal Comfort Foundations and Analysis

Download or read book Adaptive Thermal Comfort Foundations and Analysis written by Michael Humphreys and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-08-27 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been widespread dissatisfaction with accepted models for predicting the conditions that people will find thermally comfortable in buildings. These models require knowledge about clothing and activity, but can give little guidance on how to quantify them in any future situation. This has forced designers to make assumptions about people’s future behaviour based on very little information and, as a result, encouraged static design indoor temperatures. This book is the second in a three volume set covering all aspects of Adaptive Thermal Comfort. The first part narrates the development of the adaptive approach to thermal comfort from its early beginnings in the 1960s. It discusses recent work in the field and suggests ways in which it can be developed and modelled. Such models can be used to set dynamic, interactive standards for thermal comfort which will help overcome the problems inherited from the past. The second part of the volume engages with the practical and theoretical problems encountered in field studies and in their statistical analysis, providing guidance towards their resolution, so that valid conclusions may be drawn from such studies.

Book Science Fiction in Translation

Download or read book Science Fiction in Translation written by Ian Campbell and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-01 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science Fiction in Translation: Perspectives on the Global Theory and Practice of Translation focuses on the process of translation and its implications. The volume explores the translation of works of science fiction (SF) from one language to another and the translation of SF tropes, terms, and ideas of SF theory into cultures outside the West. Providing a comprehensive examination of the state of translation into English, the essays consider how representative the body of translated work of SF is from the source language/culture. It also considers the social, political, and economic choices in selecting a work to translate. The book illustrates the dramatic growth both in SF production outside the Anglosphere, the translation of works from other languages into English, and the practice of translating English-language SF into other languages. Altogether, the essays map the theory, practice, and business of SF translation around the world.

Book Meanest Foundations and Nobler Superstructures

Download or read book Meanest Foundations and Nobler Superstructures written by Ofer Gal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-07-31 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Hooke's Programme was revolutionary both cosmologically and mathematically. It presented 'the celestial motions", the proverbial symbol of stability and immutability, as a process of continuous change and prescribed only parameters of rectilinear motions and rectilinear attractions for calculating their closed curved orbits. Yet the traces of Hooke's construction of his Programme for the heavens lead through his investigations in such earthly disciplines as microscopy, practical optics and horology, and the mathematical tools developed by Newton to accomplish it appear no less local and goal-oriented than Hooke's lenses and springs.".
