This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although, as W.D. Billings notes in his chapter in this book. the development of physiological ecology can be traced back to the very beginnings of the study of ecology it is clear that the modern development of this field in North America is due in the large part to the efforts of Billings alone. The foundation that Billings laid in the late 1950s came from his own studies on deserts and subsequently arctic and alpine plants, and also from his enormous success in instilling enthusiasm for the field in the numerous students attracted to the plant ecology program at Duke University. Billings' own studies provided the model for subsequent work in this field. Physiological techniques. normally confined to the laboratory. were brought into the field to examine processes under natural environmental conditions. These field studies were accompanied by experiments under controlled conditions where the relative impact of various factors could be assessed and further where genetic as opposed to environmental influences could be separated. This blending of field and laboratory approaches promoted the design of experiments which were of direct relevance to understanding the distribution and abundance of plants in nature. Physiological mechanisms were studied and assessed in the context of the functioning of plants under natural conditions rather than as an end in itself.

Download or read book Allelopathy in the Life of Plants and their Communities written by A.M. Grodzinskii and published by Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In translating this book, we have attempted to preserve as much as possible the style and format of the original book. However, there are always difficulties in translating a technical work from one language to another, especially where different scripts or alphabets are used. Where possible, the figures from the original Russian edition have been retained and modified with English text. As the book was written fifty years ago, there have been subsequent changes to things such as chemical terms, plant names, plant family names, etc., and where it helps to clarify reading of the book, such changes have been made or noted. In a few cases, explanatory notes have been added to help amplify the text where the exact meaning may be unclear to the present-day reader. Explanatory footnotes supplied by the translators are those that are numbered; others with symbols are owing to Grodzinskii. Where possible, errors, ambiguities, and omissions have been amended.

Download or read book Principles of Plant Biochemistry written by V. L. Kretovich and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principles of Plant Biochemistry focuses on the methodologies, approaches, and techniques employed in plant biochemistry, including analysis of proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, and metabolism. The publication first takes a look at proteins and carbohydrates. Discussions focus on general properties and structure of proteins, amino acid composition of proteins and properties of the protein molecule, isolation of proteins and the establishment of their homogeneity, monosaccharides, polysaccharides, and steroids. The text then elaborates on vitamins and secondary plant compounds, including aliphatic organic acids, glycosides, tannins, essential oils and resins, herbicides, antibiotics, and phytonicides. The manuscript examines enzymes and the role of metabolism in living organisms, as well as general properties and classification of enzymes and oxidases. The book then ponders on photosynthesis and chemosynthesis, interconversion of carbohydrates, and fermentation and respiration. The inter-relationship of metabolic processes and amino acid and protein metabolism are also discussed. The publication is a dependable reference for readers interested in plant biochemistry.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is generally accepted that photosynthesis, whereby solar is transformed into geobiochemical energy, is one of the most important processes in the bio sphere. When we realize that the human population, most of which is starving, wi I I double in 20-30 years, and that photosynthesis is in practice the only source (direct or indirect) of food not only for men, but for al I I iving beings, its im portance becomes even plainer. This fact was recognized from the outset of the International Biological Programme, when photosynthesis was selected as one of the principal problems to be concentrated on. The significance of the IBP in initiating a broader-based ap proach and worldwide collaboration need not be emphasized here; it is merely ne cessary to consider the rapid increase in the number of papers on photosynthesis since its inception. It is of fundamental importance for scientists working on photosynthesis to get information on what has been done in recent years in this discipl ine. Thus as complete as possible a bibl iography is badly needed. The complexity of this pro blem requires also that the progress of ecology, chemistry and physics, as far as they concern photosynthesis, be fol lowed. Such a bib I iography, covering at least the last ten years, wi I I be indispensable for final synthesis of the results of the IBP photosynthetic programme.
