Book excerpt: Published by leading outsider art imprint Raw Vision, Singular Spaces is a groundbreaking survey of art environments created by self-taught artists from across Spain. The book introduces and examines 45 artists and their idiosyncratic sculptures, gardens and buildings, most of which have never been published. The sites are developed organically, without formal architectural or engineering plans; they are at once evolving and complete. Often highly fanciful and quixotic, the work is frequently characterized by incongruous juxtapositions, an approach that appears impulsive and spontaneous. Director of the organization SPACES (Saving and Preserving Arts and Cultural Environments), Jo Farb Hernández, combines detailed case studies of the artists and their work with contextualized historical and theoretical references to art history, anthropology, architecture, Spanish area studies and folklore. Breaking down the standard compartmentalization of genres, she reveals how most creators of art environments, who are building within their own personal spaces, fuse their creations with their daily lives.

Walking as an autonomous form of art, a primary act in the symbolic transformation of the territory, an aesthetic instrument of knowledge and a physical transformation of the 'negotiated' space, which is converted into an urban intervention. From primitive nomadism to Dada and Surrealism, from the Lettrist to the Situationist International, and from Minimalism to Land Art, this book narrates the perception of landscape through a history of the traversed city.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lady Duff Gordon is the toast of Victorian London. But when her debilitating tuberculosis means exile, she and her devoted lady's maid, Sally, set sail for Egypt. It is Sally who describes, with a mixture of wonder and trepidation, the odd ménage marshalled by the resourceful Omar, which travels down the Nile to a new life in Luxor. As Lady Duff Gordon undoes her stays and takes to native dress, throwing herself into weekly salons; language lessons; excursions to the tombs; Sally too adapts to a new world, affording her heady and heartfelt freedoms never known before. But freedom is a luxury that a maid can ill-afford, and when Sally grasps more than her status entitles her to, she is brutally reminded that she is mistress of nothing.

Book Form and perception in visual poetry

Download or read book Form and perception in visual poetry written by Laura López-Fernández and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FORM and PERCEPTION IN VISUAL POETRY one of the first serious monographs in English that explores what is defined as Visual Poetry. This intermediate genre has its own characteristics. It demands inclusion of a number of disciplines: philosophy, psychology, neurobiology, literature, painting and graphic design, etc. As with many an emergent area of study an interdisciplinary approach takes into account new perspectives of analysis while maintaining respect for traditional methods of approach to poetry. This work discusses the increasing techno-visual elements of poetry creation and by studying the possible mechanisms of perceptions helps the reader/researcher understand the complex artistic and cultural paradigm thus presented. Material is developed that helps the "reading" and "decoding" process stimulated by an unusual combination of elements in poetic discourse and example. There is research work on the semantics of verbal and visual images, color and form. General Gestalt Theory is employed in discussions of form, rhythm, representation, projection and interpretation. A number of poems and poets are discussed from the Anglosphere as well as Spanish language traditions of Spain and Latin America.

This book was released on 2019-06-26 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Andre Kertesz the Polaroids

Download or read book Andre Kertesz the Polaroids written by Andre Kertesz and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2011-10-25 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A powerful collection of the luminous last work by one of the true giants of twentieth-century photography. After the death of his wife, André Kertész consoled himself by taking up a new camera, the Polaroid SX70. As with earlier equipment, he mastered the camera and produced a provocative body of work that both honored his wife and lifted him out of depression. Here Kertész dips into his reserves one last time, tapping new people, ideas, and tools to generate a whole new body of work through which he transforms from a broken man into a youthful artist. Taken in his apartment just north of New York City’s Washington Square, many of these photographs were shot either from his window or in the windowsill. We see a fertile mind at work, combining personal objects into striking still lifes set against cityscape backgrounds, reflected and transformed in glass surfaces. Almost entirely unpublished work, these photographs are a testament to the genius of the photographer’s eye as manifested in the simple Polaroid.
