Book Advocating for Children in Foster and Kinship Care

Download or read book Advocating for Children in Foster and Kinship Care written by Mitchell Rosenwald and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to provide strategies for effective advocacy and placement within the foster care and kinship care systems. It also takes a rare look at the dynamics of the foster and kinship relationship, not just among children and the agency workers and service providers who intervene on their behalf, but also between children and those who take in and care for them as permanency develops. Drawing on their experience interacting with and writing about the institution of foster care, Mitchell Rosenwald and Beth N. Riley have composed a unique text that helps practitioners, foster parents, and relative caregivers realize successful transitions for youth, especially considering the traumas these children may suffer both before and after placement. Advocating for a child's best interests must begin early and remain consistent throughout assignment and adjustment. For practitioners, Rosenwald and Riley emphasize the best techniques for assessing a family's capabilities and for guiding families through the challenges of foster care. Part one details the steps potential foster parents and kinship caregivers must take, with the assistance of practitioners, to prepare themselves for placement. Part two describes tactics for successful advocacy within the court system, social service agencies, schools, and the medical and mental health establishments. Part three describes how to lobby for change at the agency and legislative levels, as well as within a given community. The authors illustrate recommendations through real-life scenarios and devote an entire chapter to brokering positive partnerships among practitioners, families, and other teams working to protect and transition children.

Book Empowering Children to Achieve Academic Success

Download or read book Empowering Children to Achieve Academic Success written by Karina Rivera (Graduate student) and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The lack of educational achievement among children in foster care and kinship care is one of great concern. Children in foster care and kinship care are faced with the challenges that the child welfare system imposes on them as well as their mental health concerns. The purpose of this project was to develop a curriculum for foster parents and kinship caregivers aimed at helping them empower the children and youth in their care to achieve academic success. It is vital for social workers, foster parents and kinship caregivers to collaborate and advocate for these children, ultimately reducing barriers to learning and increasing their opportunities to achieve academic success. This curriculum includes three workshops that educate foster parents and kinship caregivers about the risk and protective factors that children in their care face when striving to complete their education, while providing strategies for successful outcomes. Submission of this curriculum was not required for this thesis project.

Book The Effects of the Lack of Parental Involvement on the Academic Achievement of African American Students in Foster Care

Download or read book The Effects of the Lack of Parental Involvement on the Academic Achievement of African American Students in Foster Care written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The subject of parental involvement has been an ongoing topic of discussion in the education system for many years. With recent educational reforms that have a primary focus on achievement gap, there is a new urgency to find solutions to ensure academic success for all students. For African American families, parental involvement is done in a way that is different than the recognized method of most traditional school districts. The recognition of home-based involvement, as opposed to school-based involvement, has opened the doors to a new opportunity to engage parents in a way that is typical for specific cultures. African American children in foster care, however, face unique challenges. Not only are they members of a culture that practice a traditionally unrecognized method of parent involvement, they are also missing the essential parent element that should be there working toward their success. The effects of the lack of parental involvement for these students are detrimental to their academic achievement. There is a need to find effective and long-term solutions for these students, and it must begin with the collaborative effort of schools, child welfare agencies, and community organizations."--leaf 4.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume will address major frameworks for understanding family involvement and government support of family involvement projects in the initial chapters. The following six chapters present a theoretical base for understanding school, family, and commu-nity partnerships and research supporting promising practices. Included within each chapter are examples of research in action, focusing on spe-cific interactive activities or programs designed to bring families and schools together. Such promising practices are organized into chapters dealing with two-way home-school communication, family literacy projects, school-site parent centers, parent- school collaborative governance, and family-school education programs spanning infancy through young adult-hood. The monograph concludes with a chapter on teacher preparation for work with family, school, and community partnership issues. Besides their research expertise, each author brings a unique back-ground as classroom teacher, parent, and community social advocate to their writing. Individually, most of us have spent our early professional years within the classroom, acquiring the value of connecting home with school for the benefit of the children. As parents and grandparents, we have advocated for parental interests within the school. As community advocates, we strive for collaborative communication across groups who serve children and their families. We invite you to share our passion for working with families and community groups within our schools.

Book Fostering Parent Involvement in Elementary Classrooms

Download or read book Fostering Parent Involvement in Elementary Classrooms written by Ashley Boscole and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current research has repeatedly shown parental involvement in elementary school to have a beneficial effect on children's learning, social skills, and emotional growth. While many education professionals seek to bridge the gap between home and school, partnerships may be threatened by a disconnect between the family culture of students and that of the teacher or school. An analysis of current literature in the education field was conducted to locate research-based best practices that educators could employ to involve all families. Due to a lack of compiled best practices a comprehensive resource guide was created for elementary school teachers of all grade levels. The evolving cultural climate of our Nation's schools necessitates educators to continually seek out parent collaboration and involvement to best educate our youth so they may succeed in today's multicultural society.

Download or read book The Differences in the Educational Experiences and Caregiver Involvement in Education Between Youth in Foster Care and Those in Care of Their Biological Parents written by Alicia N. Mantilla and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this study was to explore differences in the educational experiences and caregiver involvement in education using a matched sample of 28 youth residing with non-relative foster caregivers and 140 youth residing with their biological parents. The sample was retrieved from the Educational Longitudinal Study of 2002. Youth in foster care were significantly less likely to have been recognized for good grades or have aspirations to attend a university and, performed lower on standardized tests scores than children living with their biological parents. Youth in foster care were somewhat more likely to have been placed on in-school suspension and to have received disciplinary actions for breaking school rules. However, there were no between group differences on attendance or extracurricular involvement. Foster caregivers reported significantly more parent- and school-initiated communication than biological parents and there were no differences between the groups in their involvement in home and school activities to support education. Implications for social work practice and directions for future research are discussed.
