Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forus Feasa Air Eirinn, Keating's History of Ireland, Vol. 1: Part I, Edited With Gaelic Text (From a Ms. Of T. C. D.), Literal Translation, Explanation of Gaelic Idioms, Complete Vocabulary, &C It will be seen from what is said above that I have tried to anticipate every conceivable difficulty in the way of the learner anyone who has mastered the First, Second, and Third Irish Books, published by the Society for the Preservation of the Irish Language, or the Series now being issued by the Gaelic Union, and who has a moderate acquaintance with Gaelic grammar, will be able to make his way through this book without the help of a teacher. The proof-sheets have been read very carefully by Mr. John Fleming and by Mr. David Comyn; and their criticisms have saved me from not a few errors, and given me many useful hints. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tales of the Elders of Irelandis the first complete translation of the late Middle-IrishAcallam na Sen rach, the largest literary text surviving from twelfth-century Ireland. It contains the earliest and most comprehensive collection of Fenian stories and poetry, intermingling the contemporary Christian world of Saint Patrick with his scribes; clerics; occasional angels and souls rescued from Hell; the earlier pagan world of the ancient, giant Fenians and Irish kings; and the parallel, timeless Otherworld (peopled by ever-young, shape-shifting fairies). This readable, lucid new translation is based on existing manuscript sources and is richly annotated, complete with an Introduction discussing the place of theAcallamin Irish tradition and the impact of the Fenian or Ossianic tradition on English and European literature. About the Series:For over 100 yearsOxford World's Classicshas made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. Book The Transformation Of Ireland 1900 2000

Download or read book The Transformation Of Ireland 1900 2000 written by Diarmaid Ferriter and published by Profile Books. This book was released on 2010-07-09 with total page 897 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A ground-breaking history of the twentieth century in Ireland, written on the most ambitious scale by a brilliant young historian. It is significant that it begins in 1900 and ends in 2000 - most accounts have begun in 1912 or 1922 and largely ignored the end of the century. Politics and political parties are examined in detail but high politics does not dominate the book, which rather sets out to answer the question: 'What was it like to grow up and live in 20th-century Ireland'? It deals with the North in a comprehensive way, focusing on the social and cultural aspects, not just the obvious political and religious divisions.

Book Contests and Contexts

Download or read book Contests and Contexts written by John Walsh and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite being Ireland's national and first official language, Irish is marginalised and threatened as a community language. The dominant discourse has long dismissed the Irish language as irrelevant or even an obstacle to Ireland's progress. This book critiques that discourse and contends that the promotion of Irish and sustainable socio-economic development are not mutually exclusive aims. The author surveys historical and contemporary sources, particularly those used by the Irish historian J.J. Lee, and argues that the Irish language contributes positively to socio-economic development. He grounds this argument in theoretical perspectives from sociolinguistics, political economy and development theory, and suggests a new theoretical framework for understanding the relationship between language and development. The link between the Irish language and Ireland's socio-economic development is examined in a number of case studies, both within the traditional Irish-speaking Gaeltacht communities and in urban areas. Following the spectacular collapse of the Irish economy in 2008, this critical challenge to the dominant discourse on development is a timely and thought-provoking study.
