Book Forty Years of a Sportsman s Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book Forty Years of a Sportsman s Life Classic Reprint written by Claude Champion De Crespigny and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forty Years of a Sportsman's Life Some fourteen years ago I published a volume of memoirs, in the compiling of which I had the kind assistance of the Duke of Beaufort and Mr. G. A. B. Dewar. It having been suggested to me that I have run through a good many experiences since then, I have been tempted to venture into print once more, and the result is the present volume. A portion of the former book, which deals with my earlier experiences, has naturally been retained, but, with the assistance of Mr. Harold Simpson, it has been thoroughly revised and brought up to date, and I have added another fourteen years of sport and adventure by land, sea, and air. If any apology is needed, I ofier it here. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of a Sportsman MY design and object in writing this work was not merely to depict the life of a sportsman, in the general - perhaps, with some persons, unfavourable - acceptation of that term, but, taking higher ground, to portray the character of an English gentleman attached to the sports and pastimes of his country; and, likewise, to give a sketch of a country gentleman's family, in as close imitation as pos sible of those of the best description, with which it has been my good fortune to become acquainted. In fact, in many instances, the imitation, or resemblance, is so close, as not to be doubtful to many as to who are the original parties; and they themselves cannot be displeased with my selection, when they are intended to be displayed as examplars worthy of being followed by others. Download or read book A Sportsman s Memories Classic Reprint written by Edward Roper and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Sportsman's Memories While, of course, the primary work of his life was a superb devotion to the game of cricket, yet this book of his own reminiscences will easily show that there were a score of other outlets for his ready tact, his gay wisdom, and his iron rule of doing the square, sporting thing all the time. Does this make it the easier, or the harder, to write, in due proportion, an introductory preface? I am far from sure. This book was released on 2017-12-04 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of a Great Sportsman (John Maunsell Richardson) Personally I am one of those few, and have always studied my preface ever since I was able to read any work to which the author had written such introduction. But in my case there is a special, perhaps some would call it a sentimental, reason for this practice. I was only two years old when my father died, my brother Maunsell, the subject of the following life-story, one year older, and our eldest brother four years old. We never had, therefore, the benefit of his fatherly advice during our Childhood, which, from all accounts, and from the respected and beloved name he left behind him, would undoubtedly have been to our immense advantage. Our mother and grandmother, however, with whom we lived, and who superintended our upbringing, had been devoted to him during his lifetime, and after his untimely death at thirty-eight, Cherishing his memory, as they did, above all things, were never tired of impressing us with any special admonition in regard to our conduct or studies to which my father had given expression. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forty Years of a Sportsman's Life In introducing Sir Claude Champion de Crespigny'scareer as a most persistent steeplechaser and a very successful one to those who take an interest in the Sport, and who admire determination and pluck, I feel that there is certainly no gentleman who has had such a varied experience of it, and I hardly think any professional rider either. The combination too of ballooning and steeplechasing is very remarkable. I have had the pleasure of Sir Claudes acquaintance for many years. It must be over five-and-twenty years ago that I was aware of, and very nearly a witness to, an incident that will give the readers of this book an idea of what a prompt and determined man he is. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forty-Five Years of Sport The task of editing the following pages has been a very pleasurable one to me, and I sincerely trust that their perusal may prove equally so to the reader. An editor is, at the best, but the mouthpiece of the author, and if I have failed to do justice to the ms. Placed in my hands I must excuse myself on the ground of being rather soldier and sportsman than scribe. I gladly take the opportunity thus afforded me of tendering my sincere thanks to Mr. F. H. Salvin, the author of Falconry in the British Isles, ' for the very material assistance he has given me in the compilation of Part V. He has also very kindly lent some of the plates from that valuable work. My thanks are also due to Mr. Hutchinson for kindly overlooking the portion on Golf.' Download or read book My Life as Soldier and Sportsman Classic Reprint written by J. Robson Scott and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Life as Soldier and Sportsman When a mere layman writes a book it is customary for him to inscribe a preface or, as Izaak Walton would say, an "epistle" to the readers. My original idea was to write and have printed a few personal reminiscences of the days and weeks I have spent in various sports, for the young folks who may come after me; in fact, I contemplated writing a sort of boys' book. However, it came to pass that I met, and discussed the subject with, Mr Arthur F. Meyrick who, like myself, is getting on in years. He is a most enthusiastic student of racing and other sports, and in addition to suggesting that I should write a larger volume, on more general subjects, he volunteered to contribute to my book by supplying details of the Grand National from Lottery to Troytown. Gradually, as the copy grew, so did the number of new ideas. Thus it came about that causeries on other sports suggested themselves to me. When a young man, Mr Meyrick followed in the footsteps of his father in the journalistic world, and knew most of the celebrities of his time. Book The Sportsman s Book for India Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Sportsman s Book for India Classic Reprint written by Frederick G. Aflalo and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sportsman's Book for India And if the India of to-day may still claim to be reckoned very high among the sporting countries Of the world, its Opportunities forty years ago must have been fourfold. Swift, who, with all his virtues, could scarcely have been a joyous playmate, was wont to de scribe the majority of our sports and games as imitations of fighting; and it is certain that the greater part of Indian sport, as it is understood to-day, is made up of shooting, fishing, hunting and polo, in all of which some faint semblance of warfare might perhaps be traced by an essayist skilled in such exercises. The present hand book, however, ranges Over an even wider field of recreation, taking cognisance of all manner of minor sports, games and physical exercises on land and water which help not only to redeem the monotony of station life, but also to fortify the European constitution against the ravages of a climate for which Nature never intended it.
