We were now on a stretch where the roadbed rested on a considerable fill and the track curved considerably and from my side the track was not often in had lost its root hold and had fallen against the side of the fill, and its jagged end sticking above and across the track about on a line with the hand rail of the engine. The projecting stump was about two feet in diameter and this in the path of a passenger train traveling at a speed of seventy miles an hour. It has taken several minutes to write this, but from the moment that I first saw the obstruction until we tore into it was only a matter of a second's time, yet I seemed to live ten years in that second's space. Of course, I applied the emergency, pulled her over and all that, but those things are really a joke when you are right on top of an obstruction in front of a fast running train. You are going to hit, and hit hard; what the results are going to be no man can know until after the shock, then those who are left will have some idea of it. Well, as said, we hit that stump, and it was no love tap either; I waited for the shock, but there was only the slightest tremble and our momentum carried us on, while the brakes were working overtime bringing us to a stop, and the drivers spitting fire from the friction of the brake shoes--then we stopped. I whistled back a flagman and then jumped from the cab with torch in hand to see what had been done to us. I found the nigger head of the boiler smashed in, and there was a hole large enough for a man to crawl through. The left main driving rod was kinked, evidently having been hit and jammed by a piece of the broken tree. About this time dapper little Paul Thompson, the captain, came running up and inquired, "What's the matter, Harve?" I...

Book The Life of a Locomotive Engineer

Download or read book The Life of a Locomotive Engineer written by J. O. Young and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2007-02-26 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an account of my experiences growing up in the Southern Appalachian Mountains, about exciting situations I found my self in as a pilot and aircraft owner for 20 some years. Also, many times I have been asked about the operations of a railroad. I have tried in this book to relate some of these operations while telling what goes on in the cab and the sights that are seen through a locomotive windshield. I have also related some of the narrow escapes and dangerous situations I have found myself in as an Engineer for forty years. Sometimes it was humorous, sometimes scary, sometimes deadly. So all you guys and gals, who always thought you wanted to be a locomotive engineer let me tell you about what you missed. In some instances you'll be glad you did.

Book The Locomotive Pioneers

Download or read book The Locomotive Pioneers written by Anthony Burton and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating book explores the development of locomotives over the course of fifty years. From Richard Trevithick's first experimental road engine of 1801 up to the Great Exhibition some fifty years later, locomotives have come far in reimagining and reinventing themselves to serve the people and British industry. The early years showed slow development amongst locomotives: Trevithick's first railway locomotives failed significantly as the engine broke the brittle cast-iron rails. The story is continued through the years when locomotives were developed to serve collieries, a period that lasted for a quarter of a century, and saw many different engineers trying out their ideas; from the rack and pinion railway developed by Blenkinsop and Murray, to George Stephensons engines for the Stockton & Darlington Railway. The most significant change came with Robert Stephensons innovative Rocket, the locomotive that set the formula for future developments.British engineers dominated the early years, although in France Marc Seguin developed a multi-tubular boiler at the same time as Stephenson. The next period was marked by the steady spread of railways in Europe and across the Atlantic. Timothy Hackworth of the Stockton & Darlington railway supplied locomotives to Russia, and his men had an exciting ride to deliver parts by sleigh across the snowy steppes, pursued by wolves. In America, the first locomotives were delivered from England, but the Americans soon developed their own methods and styles, culminating in the Baldwin engines, a type that has become familiar to us from hundreds of Western films. This is more than just a book about the development of a vital technology, it is also the story of the men who made it possible, from the steadily reliable team of William Buddicom and Alexander Allan, who developed their locomotives at Crewe, to the flamboyant Isambard Kingdom Brunel, whose broad gauge was served by the magnificent engines of Daniel Gooch.
