Book Macaronic Sermons

Download or read book Macaronic Sermons written by Siegfried Wenzel and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 1994-09-07 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Siegfried Wenzel's groundbreaking study seeks to describe and analyze the linguistically mixed, or macaronic, sermons in late fourteenth-century England. Not only are these works of considerable religious interest, they provide extensive information on their literary, linguistic, and cultural milieux. Macaronic Sermons begins by offering a typology of such works: those in which English words offer glosses, or offer structural functions, or offer neither of the two but yet are syntactically integrated. This last group is then examined in detail: reasons are given for this usage and for its origins, based on the realities of fourteenth-century England. Siefriend Wenzel draws valuable conclusions about the linguistic status quo of the era, together with the extent of education, the audiences' expectations, and the ways in which the authors' minds worked. Obviously of interest to scholars and students of early English literature, Macaronic Sermons also contains much valuable information for specialists in language development or oral theory, and for those interested in multicultural societies.

Book Anthony Tuckney 1599 1670

Download or read book Anthony Tuckney 1599 1670 written by Cho Youngchun and published by Reformation Heritage Books. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Youngchun Cho investigates the theology of Anthony Tuckney, an overlooked yet highly influential member of the Westminster Assembly. After a brief biography and an evaluation of Tuckney’s use of Scripture and reason, Cho shows how he related union with Christ to the doctrine of the Trinity, soteriology, and assurance of salvation. This book refutes claims that seventeenth-century Reformed theology in general, and the Westminster Standards in particular, pursued logical precision at the expense of the dynamic aspect of union with Christ, demonstrating that union with Christ was a critical element to Tuckney’s theological agenda. Series Description Complementing the primary source material in the Principal Documents of the Westminster Assembly series, the Studies on the Westminster Assembly provides access to classic studies that have not been reprinted and to new studies, providing some of the best existing research on the Assembly and its members.

Book Sermons of a Buddhist Abbot

Download or read book Sermons of a Buddhist Abbot written by Sōen Shaku and published by . This book was released on 1906 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation First published in 1906, SERMONS OF A BUDDHIST ABBOT remains one of the best introductions to Buddhist thought for a Western audience. Presented with an incisive new foreword by one of today's foremost scholars of Buddhism and Japanese religion, it contains the lectures and articles of the Japanese Zen abbot Soyen Shaku, whose talks in the United States first popularized Buddhism. Foreshadowing the attitude and method of many contemporary teachers, Shaku advocates an approach to religious life that stresses personal understanding based on practice and experience, rather than the acceptance of received creeds and doctrines. His lucid explanations make use of Western religious, philosophic, and psychological references to clarify the ideas central to understanding of Mahayana Buddhism, which is the basis of all schools and denominations.

Book United Methodist Doctrine

    Book Details:
  • Author : Bishop Scott J. Jones
  • Publisher : Abingdon Press
  • Release : 2010-09-01
  • ISBN : 1426725590
  • Pages : 313 pages

Download or read book United Methodist Doctrine written by Bishop Scott J. Jones and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2010-09-01 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout this ebook, Scott J. Jones insists that for United Methodists the ultimate goal of doctrine is holiness. Importantly, he clarifies the nature and the specific claims of ""official"" United Methodist doctrine in a way that moves beyond the current tendency to assume the only alternatives are a rigid dogmatism or an unfettered theological pluralism. In classic Wesleyan form, Jones' driving concern is with recovering the vital role of forming believers in the ""mind of Christ, "" so that they might live more faithfully in their many settings in our world.
