Book 40 Days of Dating

Download or read book 40 Days of Dating written by Timothy Goodman and published by ABRAMS. This book was released on 2015-01-20 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “What would happen if Harry met Sally in the age of Tinder and Snapchat? . . . A field guide to Millennial dating in New York City” (New York Daily News). When New York–based graphic designers and long-time friends Timothy Goodman and Jessica Walsh found themselves single at the same time, they decided to try an experiment. The old adage says that it takes forty days to change a habit—could the same be said for love? So they agreed to date each other for forty days, record their experiences in questionnaires, photographs, videos, texts, and artworks, and post the material on a website they would create for this purpose. What began as a small experiment between two friends became an Internet sensation, drawing five million unique (and obsessed) visitors from around the globe to their site and their story. 40 Days of Dating: An Experiment is a beautifully designed, expanded look at the experiment and the results, including a great deal of material that never made it onto the site, such as who they were as friends and individuals before the forty days and who they have become since.

Book Churchill and the Mad Mullah of Somaliland

Download or read book Churchill and the Mad Mullah of Somaliland written by Roy Irons and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2013-11-04 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late nineteenth century, the British Empire commanded the seas and possessed a vast Indian Empire, as well as other extensive dominions in South East Asia, Australasia, America and Africa.??To secure the trade route to the glittering riches of the orient, the port of Berbera in Somaliland was taken from the feeble grasp of an Egyptian monarch, and to secure that port, treaties were concluded with the fierce and warlike nomad tribes who roamed the inhospitable wastes of the hinterland, unequivocally granting them 'the gracious favour and protection of the Queen'. But there arose in that wilderness a man of deep and unalterable convictions; the Sayyid, the 'Mad Mullah', who utilised his great poetic and oratorical gifts with merciless and unrelenting fury to convince his fellow nomads to follow him in an anti- Christian and anti-colonial crusade. At great expense, four Imperial expeditions were sent to crush him and to support his terrified opponents; four times the military genius of the Sayyid eluded them.??It was at this point that the rising voice of Winston Churchill convinced his Liberal colleagues to abandon the expensive contest and retreat to the coast. By this betrayal, one third of the British 'protected' population perished.??It wasn't until after the Great War that Churchill, now Minister for both War and Air, as well as a major influence in the rise of Air Power, was able to redeem this betrayal. The part he played in the destruction of the Sayyid's temporal power at this point was substantial, and the preservation of the Royal Air Force was also secured. By unleashing Sir Hugh Trenchard and giving his blessing to a lightning campaign, his original betrayal was considered to be redeemed in part and his honour belatedly and inexpensively restored.??In this enthralling volume, Roy Irons brings to life this period of dynamic unrest, drawing together a number of historical accounts of the time as well as an evocative selection of illustrative materials, including maps and portraits of the main players at the forefront of the action. Personalities such as Carton de Wiart, Lord Ismay, and the much decorated Sir John 'Johnny' Gough, VC, KCB, CHG feature, as do the vaunted Camel Corps, in this eminently well-researched narrative account of this eventful and controversial episode of world history.??As featured in Essence Magazine.

Download or read book To Right Every Wrong written by Dave Andrews and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-01-21 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dave Andrews’s latest book, To Right Every Wrong, is the last in the Dave Andrews Legacy Series. It is a funny, sad, brutally honest retrospective, reflecting on what it has meant for him and his family to seek to live a lifetime dedicated to love and justice. The reflections in this book, subtitled The Making and Unmaking of One Improbable Minor Prophet, come in three parts—the personal, the prophetical, and the paradoxical. The personal part explores Andrews’s experience of the radical, compassionate spirituality that he shares with wife, Angie, and which has shaped their way of life as a family in community with marginalized and disadvantaged groups of people. The prophetical part explores Andrews’s embrace of the “strange,” “crazy,” “improbable” call he felt to be a prophet, which he has sought to flesh out in classic prophetic roles—as an interrogator, a protester, a practitioner, and an inspirator—in contemporary prophetic contexts characterized by poverty and violence. The paradoxical part explores Andrews’s making and unmaking as a minor prophet, critically constructing and deconstructing the more confrontational aspects of the prophetic roles he has played in order to be able to practice more sensitive pastoral care.

Book excerpt: Cheers to My Brother Bo: Addicted in Paradise, a heartfelt biography about the author's younger brother. The year -1949- of Bo's birth, Jersey Joe Walcot was the Heavy Weight Boxing Champion of the World. By the time the baby son of an accomplished author and an award winning LA Times Travel Editor reached manhood his recreational drug use escalated from casual to lights out. During the Vietnam War, Bo did a brief tour in the Navy. He also aborted college, and later became a custodian for the Los Angeles school district. He took pride in his work and was very likable. Yet, his drug and alcohol addiction was catastrophic. After family intervention, Bo eventually kicked his disgraceful habits; equipped with art and acting classes, he landed steady work as an extra for the TV sitcoms: Melrose Place and Evening Shade. Actress Heather Locklear was among the people he called his friend. He rubbed shoulders with stars like Burt Reynolds, Ossie Davis, Charles Durning, and Ann Wedgeworth. When his tenure in Hollywood ended, he moved to Hawaii, where he lived a leisurely comfortable life. It was there, he replaced his substance abuse dependence with troubles prescribed to him by his private doctor. After Bo succumbed to a prescription drug overdose, his life in Paradise ended. Today, his family and friends have their memories and can only imagine him surfing the waves of the Pacific Ocean.
