Book excerpt: The Liber de munitionibus castrorum ("Book about fortifying a camp", as it is usually known) describes how to lay out a temporary camp for a Roman army on campaign, comprising three legions and associated troops of various types. It is our main source for many aspects of Roman military studies, as it includes descriptions of not only the major military unit types, but also the different methods of fortification. Only a single copy of the work survives, preserved in a sixth-century manuscript, and the Latin text is in poor condition requiring major emendation. Although German, French, and Italian editions have appeared at various times, this is the first English-language edition, in which a new Latin text is presented alongside an English translation. For comparison, interested readers will also find the original Latin text and all previously suggested emendations.

Download or read book Siegecraft No Fortress Impregnable written by Harold Skaarup and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2003-04-06 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been said that the taking of a fortress depends primarily on the making of a good plan to take it, and the proper implementation and application of the resources to make the plan work. Long before a fortress has been besieged and conquered, it has to have been outthought before it can be outfought. This book outlines some of the more successfully thought out sieges, and demonstrates why it is that no fortress is impregnable. A siege can be described as an assault on an opposing force attempting to defend itself from behind a position of some strength. Whenever the pendulum of technology swings against the "status quo," the defenders of a fortification have usually been compelled to surrender. We must stay ahead of the pendulum, and not be out-thought long before we are out-fought, for, as it will be shown in this book, "no fortress is impregnable."

Download or read book The Roman Art of War written by Catherine Gilliver and published by Arcadia Publishing (SC). This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Roman army is recognised as one of the most effective fighting machines that the world has ever seen. However, the senior officer corps of the Roman army was essentially amateur, made up of aristocratic men pursuing political careers. What then was the secret of the Romans' success?Kate Gilliver provides the first comprehensive study of military theory - as well as practice - in the late Republic and early Empire. She draws not just on the ancient textbooks, but makes use of the other contemporary literary evidence and on the wealth of archaeological evidence for military activity. In five central chapters Dr Gilliver looks in detail at all aspects of the Roman army; at its organisation, the order of march, temporary encampments, pitched battles and siege warfare. These chapters reveal the army's very flexible organisation and skills, as well as it discipline. The book also contains a fine range of illustrations, an Appendix of all the key Roman military treatises and a full Glossary of key technical terms. The complete work will command a wide international readership, particularly among military historians, archaeologists and wargamers.
