Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was the purpose of this study (1) to utilize a relatively uncomplicated technique with which the economic structure of these smaller regions could be described with reasonable accuracy and with a minimum of expense, and (2) to organize the available economic information on Fort Smith, Arkansas, by use of this technique so that community planners and businessmen would have a comprehensive description of the metropolitan economy. This study provides information in four general areas: (1) It presents data showing the sources of employment and the importance of particular industries to the total Fort Smith economy. (2) By organizing available data, the study calls attention to possible sources of future change. (3) The study provides a basis on which to compare Fort Smith with other metropolitan areas. (4) By pointing out areas where more detailed studies should be made, the knowledge gained from this study could save the community expenditures on what might be unnecessary research projects.
