Book The Forts at Point L vy

Download or read book The Forts at Point L vy written by Yvon Desloges and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The forts at Point Levy, across from Quebec City, bear witness to the transition from classic to modern military construction, when military engineers abandoned the continuous rampart in favour of d̀etached forts'. These forts also illustrate the colonial past of Canada. Built just as the country was becoming independent, they exemplify the work of British strategists on the North American continent. This document describes the construction of these forts and thus tries to understand the ideas of their designers and builders. To accomplish this, it puts the building site in its political context, describes the working conditions of the military and civilian labourers, and outlines the repercussions of such an enterprise.

Book Between France and New France

Download or read book Between France and New France written by Gilles Proulx and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 1984-01-01 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between France and New France is an absorbing look at life abroad the sailing vessels which plied the North Atlantic during the French colonial era in North America. Focusing on the first half of the eighteenth century and the Seven Years' War period, this book analyses four major aspects of the crossing: martime traffic and the outfit of vessels; the Atlantic course and navigation; the people and their occupations; and life aboard the ship. Together they present a fascinating view of sea life. Gilles Proulx has used official correspondence between the Minister of marine and the Canadian colonial authorities, and the papers seized on boarded vessels, as well as over one hundred log-books and personal diaries, to obtain a wealth of detail about the rigours of the colonial shipboard experience. In addition, many photographs, both colour and black and white, have been included to illustrate this exciting period in Canadian history.

Book The Social Dimensions of Fiction

Download or read book The Social Dimensions of Fiction written by Steven Tötösy de Zepetnek and published by Konzeption Empirische Literaturwissenschaft. This book was released on 1993 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a comparative study of nineteenth-century English-Canadian and French Canadian novel prefaces, a previously unexplored literary topic. As a study in Comparative Literature - with the application of a specific literary framework and methodology - the study conforms to theoretical and methodological postulates formulated in and prescribed by this framework when applied. This a priori postulate necessitates that the research on and the presentation of the Canadian novel preface be carried out in a specific manner, as follows. First, the study will establish the hypothesis that the preface to nineteenth-century English-Canadian and French-Canadian novels is a genre in its own right. This hypothesis will rest on the following: 1) a taxonomical survey of related terms meaning "preface"; 2) a survey of secondary Iiterature of works dealing with the preface; 3) a discussion of the theoretical framework and methodology of the Empirical Theory of Literature and its appropriateness for the study of the preface; and 4) a discussion of the process of the compilation of the corpus of nineteenth-century Canadian novel prefaces (Chapter one). In a second step, the theoretical postulate outlined in the hypothesis will be put into practice by the development and production of a preface typology (Chapter two). In a third step, further tenets of the Empirical Theory of Literature will be tested on the corpus of the prefaces (Chapter three). In a fourth step, the prefaces will be analysed following the tenets formulated in and prescribed by the systemic framework applied (Chapter four).

Book Quebec During the American Invasion 1775 1776

Download or read book Quebec During the American Invasion 1775 1776 written by François Baby and published by East Lansing : Michigan State University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Available for the first time in English, the 1776 journal of François Baby, Gabriel Taschereau, and Jenkin Williams provides an insight into the failure to incite rebellion in Quebec by American revolutionaries. While other sources have shown how British soldiers and civilians and the French-Canadian gentry (the seigneurs) responded to the American invasion of 1775-1776, this journal focuses on French-Canadian peasants (les habitants) who made up the vast majority of the population; in other words, the journal helps explain why Quebec did not become the "fourteenth colony." After American forces were expelled from Quebec in early 1776, the British governor, Sir Guy Carleton, sent three trusted envoys to discover who had collaborated with the rebels from the south. They traveled to fifty-six parishes and missions in the Quebec and Trois Rivières district, discharging disloyal militia officers and replacing them with faithful subjects. They prepared a report on each parish, revealing actions taken to support the Americans or the king. Baby and his colleagues documented a wide range of responses. Some habitants enlisted with the Americans; others supplied them with food, firewood, and transportation. Some habitants refused to cooperate with the king's soldiers. In some parishes, women were the Americans' most zealous supporters. Overall, the Baby Journal clearly reveals that the habitants played an important, but often overlooked, role in the American invasion.
