Book Fort Benning Stories Lies and Legends

Download or read book Fort Benning Stories Lies and Legends written by Bridgett Sharp Siter and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2023-04-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before it was Fort Moore, it was Fort Benning, or "Fort Beginning" to the hundreds of thousands of Army veterans who started their military careers here during the first 100 years of its existence. Fort Benning Stories, Lies and Legends is not a history book but a motley collection of haunting and humorous stories about history and pioneers and Very Important People and ghosts - literal and metaphorical ghosts. It is a look at seamier and simpler times, sides of Fort Benning history that maybe shouldn't make us laugh and probably shouldn't warm our hearts, but somehow, viewed from a safe distance, in the comfort of contemporary culture, they do. Collectively, these stories help us appreciate the evolution of the south's most colorful Army installation. The author seeks to record the stories and anecdotes about life on Fort Benning that shouldn't be lost or forgotten as Fort Benning transitions to Fort Moore, and she shares fascinating information about earlier populations within this region of the Chattahoochee Valley that preceded the development and growth of an Army training camp in the early part of the twentieth century. This book includes stories the author collected over more than two decades as she lived and worked on Fort Benning as a reporter and the wife of a career soldier. She investigates the merits of various legends that have grown around the historic post infrastructure and shares opinions and insights about the evolution of traditional Army cultures and courtesies.

Book excerpt: “A terrific book, lively and brisk . . . a must read for anyone who tries to understand the Vietnam War.” —Thomas E. Ricks Is it possible that the riddle of America’s military failure in Vietnam has a one-word, one-man answer? Until we understand Gen. William Westmoreland, we will never know what went wrong in the Vietnam War. An Eagle Scout at fifteen, First Captain of his West Point class, Westmoreland fought in two wars and became Superintendent at West Point. Then he was chosen to lead the war effort in Vietnam for four crucial years. He proved a disaster. Unable to think creatively about unconventional warfare, Westmoreland chose an unavailing strategy, stuck to it in the face of all opposition, and stood accused of fudging the results when it mattered most. In this definitive portrait, prize-winning military historian Lewis Sorley makes a plausible case that the war could have been won were it not for General Westmoreland. An authoritative study offering tragic lessons crucial for the future of American leadership, Westmoreland is essential reading. “Eye-opening and sometimes maddening, Sorley’s Westmoreland is not to be missed.” —John Prados, author of Vietnam: The History of an Unwinnable War, 1945–1975

Book Leyte

Download or read book Leyte written by M. Hamlin Cannon and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the Leyte Campaign the War in the Pacific entered a decisive stage. The period of limited offensives, bypassing, and island hopping was virtually over. American troops in greater numbers than ever before assembled in the Pacific Theater, supported by naval and air forces of corresponding size, fought and overcame Japanese forces of greater magnitude than any previously met. Though the spotlight is on the front-line fighting, the reader will find in this volume a faithful description of all arms and services performing their missions. The account is not exclusively an infantry story. It covers as well the support of ground fighting on Leyte by large-scale naval operations and by land-based air power under the most adverse conditions. In addition, careful attention to logistical matters, such as the movement of supplies and the evacuation of the wounded, gives the reader a picture of the less spectacular activities of an army in battle.

Book excerpt: As U.S. military forces appear overcommitted and some ponder a possible return to the draft, the timing is ideal for a review of how the American military transformed itself over the past five decades, from a poorly disciplined force of conscripts and draft-motivated "volunteers" to a force of professionals revered throughout the world. Starting in the early 1960s, this account runs through the current war in Iraq, with alternating chapters on the history of the all-volunteer force and the analytic background that supported decisionmaking. The author participated as an analyst and government policymaker in many of the events covered in this book. His insider status and access offer a behind-the-scenes look at decisionmaking within the Pentagon and White House. The book includes a foreword by former Secretary of Defense Melvin R. Laird. The accompanying DVD contains more than 1,700 primary-source documents-government memoranda, Presidential memos and letters, staff papers, and reports-linked directly from citations in the electronic version of the book. This unique technology presents a treasure trove of materials for specialists, researchers, and students of military history, public administration, and government affairs to draw upon.
