Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forsterite Olivine Deposits of North Carolina and Georgia It is not well known that there occurs in the Southeast a reserve Of at least tons Of high-grade forsterite Olivine,1 averaging per cent Of magnesia, suitable for the production Of special refractories and various magnesium compounds. These deposits, because of their occurrence at accessible points and the fact that they contain more magnesium than any other common mineral, have excellent possibilities of being utilized in the development Of new important industries in the South. Book Cobalt in Forsterite olivine Deposits of the Blue Ridge North Carolina and Georgia

Download or read book Cobalt in Forsterite olivine Deposits of the Blue Ridge North Carolina and Georgia written by Mark L. Chatman and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results of an evaluation of two forsterite-olivine deposits in the Blue Ridge physiographic province of the southeastern United States. Data from the Buck Creek deposit, Clay County, NC, and the Lake Burton deposit, Rabun County, GA, are compiled and evaluated. Both deposits contain 0.01% cobal-- about average cobalt, concentration for ultramafic rocks, including forsterite-olivine. Because cobalt is a strategic metal with advanced materials applications and no domestic mine production of cobalt is underway, further consideration was given to cobalt in these forsterite-olivine deposits. There are 25 forsterite-olivine deposits in close proximity in the Blue Ridge containing 1 billion tons of potentially cobalt-bearing forsterite-olivine rock. Cobalt recovery is not feasible at the two deposits studied in detail, due to low cobalt concentrations and metallurgical concerns. The contained cobalt value at mid-1987 prices is about $1 per ton of forsterite-olivine and this cobalt is tied to primary silicate mineral bonds, requiring costly, unproven processing. Data suggest that cobalt occurrences in the other Blue Ridge forsterite-olivines are similarly restrained.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To celebrate its fiftieth anniversary, the Carolina Geological Society invited forty-three authors to contribute to the creation of The Geology of the Carolinas. The only comprehensive, modern treatment of the subject, the volume has been prepared for a diverse readership ranging from undergraduate students to specialists in the fields of geology and related earth sciences. Following the editors' general introduction are chapters on Precambrian and Paleozoic metamorphic and igneous rocks of the Appalachian Blue Ridge and Piedmont; rocks of early Mesozoic rift basins, formed just before the opening of the Atlantic Ocean; Cretaceous and Tertiary sedimentary deposits of the Atlantic Coastal Plain; Quaternary geology and geomorphology; Cenozoic tectonism, including evidence for the recurrence of large earthquakes near Charleston; and an overview of mineral resources in the Carolinas. The book includes an index of field guides produced by the society and a thorough bibliography. By introducing exciting new concepts and focusing on challenging problems on the frontiers of research, this authoritative book will stimulate research in the years to come. The Editors: J. Wright Horton, Jr., is a research geologist for the United States Geological Survey in Reston, Virginia. Victor A. Zullo is a professor of geology at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

Book Forest Hydrology and Ecology at Coweeta

Download or read book Forest Hydrology and Ecology at Coweeta written by Wayne T. Swank and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coweeta is one of the oldest continuously operating laboratories of its type in the world. For the first time, a complete review and summary of more than 50 years study of the hydrological and ecological responses of baseline and managed Southern Appalachian hardwood forests at Coweeta is now supplied by this volume. The long-term research approach represents a continuum of theory, experimentation and application using watersheds as landscape units of investigation. Thus, the information encompasses a wide range of interpretations and interests. In addition to in-depth analyses of terrestrial and stream processes, the breadth of coverage includes historical perspectives and relevance of ecosystem science to management needs. In a broader sense, the Coweeta research effort is considered from a perspective of national and international forest hydrology and ecology programs.
