Book Formulation and Application Technologies for Microbial Pesticides

Download or read book Formulation and Application Technologies for Microbial Pesticides written by RJ. Cibulsky and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past twenty years, a number of technological advancements have been made in the development of microbial pesticides for use in agricultural and forest insect control programs. The microbial pesticide currently used for the majority of these applications has been Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) var. kurstaki. This organism has proven itself to be a valuable tool for the control of lepidopterous insects on vegetables, cotton, soybean, and in hardwood and coniferous forests. The expansion of Bt from the original vegetable crop applications to field crops and forest insect control programs has occurred along with significant advances in technology involving the culture, mass production, formulation, and application of this unique microbe. The current interest in Bt and microbial insect control agents has been heightened by the recent development of significant resistance to chemical insecticides in a number of target insect species.

Book Technology of Application of Pesticides

Download or read book Technology of Application of Pesticides written by Nam S and published by Daya Books. This book was released on 2005 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical pesticides have contributed greatly to the increase of yields in agriculture by controlling pests and diseases and also towards checking the insect-borne diseases like malaria in the human health sector. However their sporadic use has been leading to significant erosion not only to public health but also to food quality resulting in an impact load on the environment and hence the development of pest resistance. The latter is reducing their efficacy and consequently one has to continually search for other chemical pesticides that may be more toxic and expensive. According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) several hundred thousand tons of dangerous and useless pesticides are currently plaguing the countries around the globe. Even worse funds available for the cleanup of these obsolete pesticides are highly inadequate. On the other hand the rise in cost of pesticides has also economic consequences both to the individual farmer and the nation. Though overuse and misuse there is considerable waste, adding to the cost and contributing to the adverse environmental and health consequences. This not only affects the user of pesticides but also the ecosystem in general by entering the food chain and polluting the water table and surface water. Unprecedented rise of cancer chronic kidney disease, suppression of the immune system sterility among males and females, endocrine disorders, neurological and behavioural disorders, especially among children, have been attributed to chronic poisoning. Thus the formulation and applications of pesticides must be accurate in order to obtain the best possible must be accurate in order to obtain the best possible result, which will help in reducing the pesticide load in the environment. Besides the status report of the experts from 13 developing countries, this publication includes manuscripts and papers by eminent experts dealing with the technology of application of pesticides; usage of pesticides and occupational health; eco-friendly alternate strategies for the management of crop pests, diseases and weeds through biotechnological approaches; legislation governing the use of pesticides; technologies and alternative technologies; biological control etc. The publication also includes a set of recommendations made during the workshop. Book A Roadmap to the Successful Development and Commercialization of Microbial Pest Control Products for Control of Arthropods

Download or read book A Roadmap to the Successful Development and Commercialization of Microbial Pest Control Products for Control of Arthropods written by Willem J. Ravensberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-02-09 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biocontrol is among the most promising methods for a safe, environmentally benign and sustainable pest control. Microbial pesticides offer a great potential, and it is anticipated that they will become a substantial part of the use of all crop protection products. Their development and commercialization, however, has been difficult and with many failures. In this book a rational and structured roadmap has been designed for the development and commercialization of microbial pest control products for the control of arthropod pests. The building blocks of the entire process are identified and essential aspects highlighted. Biopesticides based on entomopathogenic bacteria, fungi, viruses and nematodes are elaborately discussed. This systematic roadmap with a strong focus on economics and market introduction will assist academic researchers and industrial developers of biopesticides in accomplishing their goal: the development of successful cost-effective microbial pesticides.

Book Microbial Formulations Opportunities and Challenges

Download or read book Microbial Formulations Opportunities and Challenges written by BN. Devisetty and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microbial control of insect pests in agriculture, forestry, and vector (mosquitoes and black flies) markets is a commercial reality. Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (B.t.k.) is the predominant microbial pesticide for agriculture and forestry applications. Novel, effective, stable, potent, and economical formulations developed for corn borer control and forest pests have the potential of significantly replacing hazardous chemical treatments of food crops and forestry. Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis is the second most important microbial pesticide currently in large scale commercial use for control of mosquitoes and black flies. High potency, effective and economic granular and liquid formulations currently being field developed have the potential of enhancing its use both for mosquito control and black fly control. The limitations of current formulations of B.t.k. and B.t.i. and the challenges in the design of effective formulations are discussed in detail. The future for microbial pesticides is good considering advances being made in biotechnology, fermentation development and formulation technology.

Book Bioformulations for Sustainable Agriculture

Download or read book Bioformulations for Sustainable Agriculture written by Naveen Kumar Arora and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-06 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than a century has passed since the first bioformulations were introduced to the market. But there is still much to be done, explored and developed. Though bioformulations offer green alternatives and are important for sustainable agriculture, they make up only a small fraction of the total additions used to enhance crop yields or protect them from pests. There is a great need to develop bioformulations that can promote confidence among end users; accordingly, it is imperative that bioformulations to replace chemicals be reliable and overcome the shortcomings of the past. Bioformulations: for Sustainable Agriculture discusses all the issues related to the current limitations and future development of bioformulations. It examines in detail those bioformulations that include biofertilizers and biopesticides (also commonly known as bioinoculants), presenting a global picture of their development. Further chapters address diverse microbes that are already being or could be used as bioformulations. The book also discusses the techniques, tools and other additions required to establish bioformulations as trustworthy and global solutions. It assesses the types of bioformulations currently available on the market, while also considering the future roles of bioformulations, including the reclamation of marginal and polluted soils. Further, it discusses the current legislation and much-needed amendments. Overall the book provides a comprehensive outlook on the status quo of bioformulations and the future approaches needed to improve them and achieve sustainable agriculture and food security without sacrificing the quality of soils. This will be extremely important in offering chemical-free foods and a better future for generations to come.
