Book New Adventures in Language and Interaction

Download or read book New Adventures in Language and Interaction written by Jürgen Streeck and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book sixteen international scholars of language and social interaction describe their distinct frameworks of analysis. Taking conversation analysis and interactional sociolinguistics as their points of departure and investigating ordinary conversation as well as institutions such as health care, therapy, and city council meetings, they often incorporate gesture, prosody, and the listener's behavior in the analysis of talk. While some approaches are grounded in a critique of the major schools of interaction analysis, others integrate the interactionist perspective with ideas from fields such as systemic-functional linguistics, distributed cognition, and the sociology of knowledge. Each chapter combines a statement of the terms and methods of analysis with an exemplary analysis of a moment of interaction. "New Adventures in Language and Interaction" gives an excellent overview of the novelty and diversity of interaction-focused perspectives on language and of the heterogeneity of approaches that have evolved from the pioneering work of Sacks and Schegloff, Gumperz, and their co-workers.

Book Dynamiques et structures en langue

Download or read book Dynamiques et structures en langue written by David Piotrowski and published by CNRS Éditions via OpenEdition. This book was released on 2020-12-10 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Constructions

Download or read book Constructions written by Peter Auer and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-08-29 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume embarks on an exploration of the processual and dynamic character of grammatical constructions in emergence, both from an ‘emergent’ and an ‘emerging’ perspective. ‘Emerging’ constructions develop out of their discourse contexts. Talking of emerging constructions is compatible with a view of grammar as a stable system of rules and structures which may ‘emerge’ (i.e., come into existence) out of a pool of previously unordered elements. ‘Emergent’ constructions on the contrary are due to the on-line production of grammar in time. The term ‘emergent’ emphasises the fact that a grammatical structure is always temporary and ephemeral. In both senses, grammar is modelled as a highly adaptive resource for interaction. On the basis of empirical studies on spoken English, German, Hebrew, Swedish and French, the volume addresses the following questions: How can what initially appears to be construction x end up being construction y in on-line syntax? What are the local interactional needs which such processes respond to in the process of their emergence? Does the on-line (re-)modelling of a construction concern its syntactic or semantic side ‐ or both? And finally: Should emergent grammatical structures as they unfold in real time be seen as stages in the emerging of grammar?

Book Linguistics of text and conversation

Download or read book Linguistics of text and conversation written by Klaus Brinker and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2000 with total page 937 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This series of HANDBOOKS OF LINGUISTICS AND COMMUNICATION SCIENCE is designed to illuminate a field which not only includes general linguistics and the study of linguistics as applied to specific languages, but also covers those more recent areas which have developed from the increasing body of research into the manifold forms of communicative action and interaction. For ""classic"" linguistics there appears to be a need for a review of the state of the art which will provide a reference base for the rapid advances in research undertaken from a variety of theoretical standpoints, while in the m.

Book Pratiques sociales et m diations symboliques

Download or read book Pratiques sociales et m diations symboliques written by Michèle Grossen and published by Peter Lang Group Ag, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1997 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Exploring the Dynamics of Multilingualism

Download or read book Exploring the Dynamics of Multilingualism written by Anne-Claude Berthoud and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2013-12-17 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the meanings and implications of multilingualism and its uses in a context of rapid changes, in Europe and around the world. All types of organisations, including the political institutions of the European Union, universities and private-sector companies must rise to the many challenges posed by operating in a multilingual environment. This requires them, in particular, to make the best use of speakers’ very diverse linguistic repertoires. The contributions in this volume, which stem from the DYLAN research project financed by the European Commission as part of its Sixth Framework Programme, examine at close range how these repertoires develop, how they change and how actors adapt skilfully the use of their repertoires to different objectives and conditions. These different strategies are also examined in terms of their capacity to ensure efficient and fair communication in a multilingual Europe. Careful observation of actors’ multilingual practices reveals finely tuned communicational strategies drawing on a wide range of different languages, including national languages, minority languages and lingue franche. Understanding these practices, their meaning and their implications, helps to show in what way and under what conditions they are not merely a response to a problem, but an asset for political institutions, universities and business.
