Book Strategies for Minimizing Nitrosamine Formation During Disinfection

Download or read book Strategies for Minimizing Nitrosamine Formation During Disinfection written by Frank Sacher and published by American Water Works Association. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nitrosamines are among the most toxic and carcinogenic chemical compounds known. Recently, N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) has been identified as a possible water disinfection by-product and has been detected in water treatment plants in the US and Canada that use chloramines as a disinfectant. This report describes a research project on strategies for minimizing nitrosamine levels in drinking water. The research project focuses on the most prominent nitrosamine, NDMA, but also covers other aliphatic nitrosamines. Conclusions from the literature search and laboratory-scale experiments were the verified by full-scale tests in water utilities in the US, Australia, and Germany. The report lacks a subject index. Sacher is affiliated with DVGW-Technologiezentrum Wasser, Germany.

  • ISBN : 0309224624
  • Pages : 276 pages

Download or read book Water Reuse written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-07-17 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Expanding water reuse-the use of treated wastewater for beneficial purposes including irrigation, industrial uses, and drinking water augmentation-could significantly increase the nation's total available water resources. Water Reuse presents a portfolio of treatment options available to mitigate water quality issues in reclaimed water along with new analysis suggesting that the risk of exposure to certain microbial and chemical contaminants from drinking reclaimed water does not appear to be any higher than the risk experienced in at least some current drinking water treatment systems, and may be orders of magnitude lower. This report recommends adjustments to the federal regulatory framework that could enhance public health protection for both planned and unplanned (or de facto) reuse and increase public confidence in water reuse.

Book Green Industrial Applications of Ionic Liquids

Download or read book Green Industrial Applications of Ionic Liquids written by Robin D. Rogers and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 563 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the lecture notes for the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on th Green Industrial Applications of Ionic Liquids held April 12th_16 , 2000 in Heraklion, Crete, Greece. This was the fIrst international meeting devoted to research in the area of ionic liquids (salts with melting points below 100 0c), and was intended to explore the promise of ionic liquids as well as to set a research agenda for the fIeld. It was the fIrst international meeting dedicated to the study and application of ionic liquids as solvents, and forty-one scientists and engineers from academia, industry, and government research laboratories (as well as six industry observers and four student assistants) met to discuss the current and future status of the application of ionic liquids to new green industrial technologies. It was immediately clear that the number of organic chemists and engineers working in the fIeld needed to be increased. It was also clear that the declining interest in high temperature molten salts and subsequent increase in low melting ionic liquid solvents had not yet taken hold in Eastern Europe. Participants from NATO Partner Countries contributed signifIcant expertise in high temperature molten salts and were able to take back a new awareness and interest in ionic liquid solvents.

Book The Impacts of UV Direct Photolysis and UV hydrogen Peroxide Advanced Oxidation Processes on the Formation of Nitrosamines and Organic Chloramines from Subsequent Chlor am ination

Download or read book The Impacts of UV Direct Photolysis and UV hydrogen Peroxide Advanced Oxidation Processes on the Formation of Nitrosamines and Organic Chloramines from Subsequent Chlor am ination written by Monica Harvey and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultraviolet direct photolysis (UV) and the advanced oxidation process UV/H2O2 are new technologies in the water treatment industry. Both treatments can cause the transformation of organic compounds. Nitrosamines and organic chloramines are disinfection by-products (DBPs) formed from the reaction of organic nitrogen compounds during chlorination or chloramination (chlor(am)ination) disinfection. It is therefore possible for UV and UV/H 2O2 to affect the organic compound precursors for nitrosamines and organic chloramines and thus their formation from subsequent chlor(am)ination. The precursor compounds, UV and H2O2 doses used for UV or UV/H2O2, and alkalinity were found to have an effect on the formation of nitrosamines and organic chloramines during bench-scale experiments. Full scale studies found UV and UV/H2O2 had different effects on the formation of different nitrosamine species and organic chloramine concentrations, and that a potential correlation existed between the formation of organic chloramines from chlorination and the formation of N-nitrosodimethylamine from chloramination.

Book Active Oxygen in Biochemistry

  • Author : Valentine Angelou
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-03-09
  • ISBN : 1461397839
  • Pages : 480 pages

Download or read book Active Oxygen in Biochemistry written by Valentine Angelou and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of "Oxygen Activation" has attracted considerable interest recently, not only because it presents challenges in those fields of basic research that aim to understand the fundamental aspects of chemical and biological reactions that involve dioxygen, but also because of its wide range of practical implications in such diverse fields as medicine, synthesis of pharmaceuticals and other organic compounds, materials science, and atmospheric science. This is the second of two volumes that focus on the subject of oxygen activation, the first slanted toward chemistry and the second toward biological chemistry. We planned these volumes to be more general than many monographs of this sort, not as detailed summaries of the authors' own research but rather as general overviews of the field. Our choice of topics was strongly influenced by our syllabus for a course entitled "Oxygen Chemistry," which two of us have twice taught jointly at UCLA. Definition of important issues, horizons, and future prospects was an important goal, and, although totally comprehensive coverage was not possible, we believe that we have chosen a representative selection of research topics current to the field. We have targeted this work to a diverse audience ranging from professionals in fields from physics to medicine to beginning graduate students who are interested in rapidly acquiring the basics of this field.
