In this paradigm, several small satellites fly in close formation and coordinate their activities so that through sparse-array interferometric and synthetic aperture techniques the cluster can effectively operate as though it were a much larger monolithic satellite. Management of such clusters will require increased automation for planning and scheduling, both in pre-flight mission planning and during operations. This paper describes work aimed at defining and meeting the special planning and scheduling requirements of the formation-flying cluster.

Book excerpt: There is growing interest in flying coordinated clusters of small spacecraft to perform missions once accomplished by single, larger spacecraft. Using these satellite clusters reduces cost, improves survivability, and increases the flexibility of the mission. One challenge in implementing these satellite clusters is maintaining the formation as it experiences orbital perturbations, most notably due to the non-spherical Earth. Certain aspects of the orbital geometry can remain virtually fixed over extended periods of time due to a natural phenomenon called a frozen orbit. Specifically, the elements of the orbital geometry that can remain fixed are the argument of perigee (a measure of where the orbit is closest to the Earth) and the eccentricity (a measure of how circular or elliptical the orbit is). For satellite formations, using this frozen orbit phenomenon results in considerable propellant savings. In this study, a discussion of current literature on this topic is given. Some examples of formations at near-frozen conditions are shown. There is also a discussion of the propellant impact of near-frozen conditions. If two orbits meet a certain set of initial conditions, the orbits will naturally stay in the vicinity of each other. These orbits are sometimes called Hill2s orbits. An algorithm is developed here that determines if the Hill2s orbit conditions will be met given the initial differences in eccentricity and argument of perigee for two satellites.

Book excerpt: Kolmogorov, Arnold and Moser (KAM) theory provides that orbits of satellites whose dynamics are representable by an integrable Hamiltonian plus a small, real perturbation lie on tori in phase psace and remin on the KAM tori for all time, unless acted upon by a non-conservative force. A refined technique for constructing KAM tori for Earth-orbiting satellites is developed and implemented using numerically integrated orbital data for hypothetical satellites and involving methods of Fourier analysis and spectral decomposition. Definition of satellite formations on the KAM tori is performed and analyses conducted to investigate both constellations with large seperations and clustors with small separations. Cluster formations with physical secular drift rates on the order of nanometers to micrometers per second are obtained. A brief discussion of effects of non-conservative forces (such as atmospheric drag) on KAM tori is given.
